We're going to change a lot about the landscape system. This is only a small test with a few buildings. The final city will look a lot better. :)
I still think it looks incredible for the FS2 engine.

I guess now is the right time to ask for some help with the unwraping of some models. :)

those lights kick ass :D

Buildings are awesome. How well does the AI handle them?

Perfectly. They just stand there and do nothing. ;7
Edit: Damn, I tend to skip letters in thread titles.
Could a mod fix this please? :)
-
That looks unbelievable so far, the engine really handles the buildings quite well, but, how long until you get the Great Fox ingame...?
-
We don't have a model for that right now, but maybe we just found someone who want's tp share his Great Fox model with us. :)
You'll see the Great Fox in the second mission.
-
Looks great. Have you tried already multiple AI ships there? As you know the FS AI loves to crash into stuff and that area looks predestined to be a destruction derby for AI ships.
BTW, how did you achieve the fog at the horizon?
-
Uhm, I can't tell you why we proably won't have any AI problems right now. ;)
The fog is just a modified nebula with rather 'weak' poofs.
Right now I'm trying to get the ambience to the final look.
Well, I'm testing out the limits while I'm doing so-
Over 70 objects... no problem. ;)

Wow. Just Wow....
:eek2::yes:
-
So what happens if you fly too far to the..."edge"?
Is there any way to handle that, will the player smack into an invisible wall, end up at the other side of the field, or just keep flying past the "ground's edge" into the void?
On a very minor note, I hope those fighters are to scale, i.e. the pilot cockpit doesn't imply that the person in the cockpit is the size of a 10-foot tall gorilla or bigger than a window on a building would imply human height. :P
-
Although we will have invisible walls, there won't be an edge. ;)
Uhm, and the scaling needs some fixing... well a lot of fixing.
I'll try to upload a short clip of this test. Right now I'm uploading something else, so it may take a while. :)
It's more or less something like a tech demo clip. No action, no scripts, just flying around.
-
You should bug the heck out of the SCP development team to implement a "Wrapping Atmosphere Engine Mode" that makes the FS2 engine behave like Battlefield 1942's with a definable wrapping box boundary around a region of space (go to this edge you seamlessly end up at the other side, of course, any ground model must reflect this).
-
Is that anything like SF64's warping-on-the-edge multiplayer thing? Cause I think you could do that with FRED.
-
Is that really a Freespace 2 Mod?
A City in Freespace Engine.. impressive..
-

You could do it for your ship easily enough. You couldn't do it for the shots you'd just fired at the enemy ship though so it would be very noticable.
-
Well, that's how it was in SF64 anyway, it was the best strategy too. Stay close the the edge to always vanish from your opponent and their shots. Then sneak up on them and fire a Nova Bomb. :D
-
I took a short clip, but this WMV compression is most horrible... :doubt:
Download (http://www.game-warden.com/starfox/Non_SF_related_stuff/SoL_preview.wmv) (18MB WMV)
Edit:
Uhm, don't worry about the HUD, I've set the res to 800*600, to avoid lags. (As soon as I start recording my fps goes down to 1/3.)
I'm very happy with the performance. ~70 objects + all SCP features (yes -PCX32) and it still runs at decent speeds, even when I record a clip. :)
SCP team

Forgive my ignorance, but is this a conversion of another game?
Also are the Buildings separate models docked to the main base, or is it just one huge model?
-
It's supposed to be a total conversion of the StarFox games.
I suppose the buildings are just normal ship models without engines and a high mass to prevent them from being knocked around by shots.
-

It's a Starfox Total Conversion for Freespace 2 Open.
Right now, the buildings are set up on a huge landscape model (not even docked), that will change, as we change our landscape concept, to achive an even better looking city.
-
Aye its the Starfox series from Nintendo.
As for the models, I think atm they are placed indivually, no docking. Though that may change I think.
Top Screens DaBrain. :D
-
:eek2: Holy *^#@! Excellent work for what you have to work with. That nova bomb works perfectly!
-
Hehe, Dab you did a great job ^^
-
Those building were made by Axem, I only unwraped and textured them. Omniscraper created the cool landscape.
AqueousShadow wrote the setting. Jonathan_27 created the road and streetlight models. DZComposer made the music.
Nuke helped with the glowpoints. ;)
And all other memers will have something to show off soon too. :)
Those guys are great!
We still have a few open positions. (Unwrap, anyone?)
:)

You might be able to do something like this with SEXPs. It would be rather crude and the transition wouldn't be seamless in most cases, I suspect, but it is possible.
Starfox 64 did that anyhow, so it might be something to look into.
-
Looks cool. Although I think even now, the nebula poofs might be too thick. And the lightning seems a little out of place. Also, the music is fine for the most part, but I cringed for the last bit. It doesn't fit and sounds incredibly annoying. Other than that, it looks good. Although I always thought the starfox 64 ship had looked less fragile...:sigh:
-
Don't worry, the music will fit perfectly to the first mission. ;)
The fog problem will be solved. Thanks to WMCoolmon. :)
The ships need a lot of table tweaking.
-
hey i think i found another glowpoint bug, type 0 normals dont seem to work. i cant remember my mantis logon name though.
i wonder if you could implement a terrain tieling system, where you would set up a terrain grid table and you can specify a model for each grid square. it would take some great modeling skills to make sure the tiles lign up properly. but it would be kinda cool if you pulled it off. its the way normal flight sims pull off global terrain. the engine would only load a few grid squares at a time and unload ones that are out of range. you could have an insanely high detail terrain system. with a proper atmoshperic lift and gravity you could make freespace into an engine option for those working on realistic flight sims.
-
That clip was rather impressive. What did you use to capture it? I love that nova bomb effect - the star-shaped explosion is extremely cool.
-
I've used FRAPS for that. :)
The nova bomb explosion is one of my favourite effects. ;)

Lightning noted. Music is great, but yes, there's some problems with the looping sequence. And that's not the SF64 ship. It's the old school, SNES one, if you take a good look at it.
Honestly, I'm impressed myself that we've done a lot of this work, and it's all owed to our awesome team. It's so great that we've gotten so much done with the number of people we have. And guess what? If you're impressed with what DB has shown here, you'll piss your pants when you see the other stuff we've got planned....:drevil:
-
I noticed that it was the SNES one, but it looks too...weak...or thin..or something. Seeing as how our graphics capabilities are not that of the SNES's, think we could upgrade?

Ok, the AI has a problem with the buildings, but that won't trouble us too much. ;) At least I hope so.
We have planned something *special* for the first mission. ;7

Awesome... downloading the movie now. :)

Sorry, for the bad compression quality in the clip.

See the building to the left? It needs some MOI tweaking I think.
-
The Arwing we see in those screen are the final ? Or you 'll change it with a more detail Arwing ?
-
The Arwing in the last two screens is the Arwing seen in Starfox: Assault for GC.
It's a super-detailed HTL model, yet it's not final. I need to unwrap and texture it.
I'd have started the texturing already, but the unwraping stuff is too new for me to do it right. :(
BTW I was thinking about voice acting. Well, I guess there are only a few people who want to do that. I'm not naive, I'm pretty sure this won't work out, but if there is enough interest, I'll take it serious and start working on it.

We already found a 'Slippy'.

i forget, what was the bunny's name :D
snes starfox was one of my favorite games on a console ever. never played starfox 64 or the game cube one. iit always seemed silly to me that such a kickass game pulled a disney and used animal pilots.

The bunny is Peppy. :)
The be honest, the old SNES Starfox was my favourite SF game too. Not as childish as the new games, plus, it had the best music IMHO.
But SF64 was a really fun too. Kinda more childish, but it had a lot of action. (Pure, stupid action. I love this kind of simple fun. :) )
-
So, if the SNES is your favorite one, why don't you make a remake ^^
I've never finished it in Medium and Hard difficulty :(
-
I loved the SNES version :)
And that video was kickass! I can't wait for this mod! :D

Maybe we could...

:drevil:
But that won't allow us to use all SCP features... Maybe one level or so. Just for fun. :)

Ahhh, I'd love to show you how it will look like when it's final... but a few things are not ready yet...
-
Hehe, I love it ^^
Make us a remake. Starwing was my best SNES game ^^
-
OO; Holy ****. You guys kick ASS! The ATTACK CARRIER! God I loved that thing. You'd better incorporate the destructable parts correctly! ^^;
Oh, and these are the baddies I want you guys to put in there, as I am a HUGE Starfox fan and loved the SNES and N64 games to DEATH. Forgive me if I don't remember all the names. ^^;
From SNES Starfox:
-Atomic Base (That could make for an AWESOME level)
-Dancing Insector
-Phantron (both forms)
-Plasma Hydra
-Blade Barrier
-Great Commander (warship and mecha versions)
-Andross
-Slot Machine (C'mon, you know you want to!)
From N64:
-Granga
-Meteo Crusher
-Star Wolf Team (in Wolfen I, and II models)
-Spyborg
-Core (from Bolse)
-Saucerer
-Mechbeth
-Shogun Warriors and Warlord
-Sarumarine
-Golmech
And..yeah, that's it. ^^;
-
Jeeeeeeeeeeesus. That's pretty. In a threatening sort of way. I was 4 or 5 when SF for the SNES came out, so I couldn't really appreciate it... my dad regularly played through it, though, that much I remember.
-

I thought it was most fun on hard. 'ceot for that damned Sector Z with it's spinny see-through sticks.
The Great Commander Boss (Venom 1) was ace tho.
-
I suppose I should go remake that ship since everyone is swooning over it. :p
I had a test video of all its bays opening up using Bob's subobject animation code. I'll see if I can dig it up.
-
Right. The clip impressed me a lot!
It was like:  Hey what's going to happen now? :eek2: No, no that can't be! It's too cool to be true! :)
-
how are you gonna hangel ground units? maybey you can push for some new features in the scp.
-
We're using the 'no bank' feature.
Altough, we didn't really test this for AI controlled ships yet...
I guess this is going to become pretty intersting. ;)
Ok, does anybody here want to help us with some unwraping. That would really help us a lot!
-
Ahhhhh crazy p1mpage....no more! DB, you'll give away everything before it's released....don't spoil the fun :D
-
Hehe, don't worry. The 'no-bank' feature is nothing secret. :)
I didn't spoil much at all.
Don't forget we need a few more members.
Please PM me if you want to help us. Even single works will help a lot. It's mostly about two unwrap jobs.
-
By unwrap, you mean that th emesh is already mapped, and you want it to use one map file rather than several?
Or you mean that they have to be UV mapped?
-
One of them isn't UV mapped at all and the other one has probably to be UV mapped again. It has an UV map already, but I can't do much with Lith. I think it's easier to UV map it again.
-
And that would be all that's required? UV Mapping isn't terribly hard (On a decently modelled ship). It's the map making that can be tedious.
If you want me to try one, send me a pic of the mesh to my pm box, and I'll see if it looks too hard for me. ;)
-
By the way, what happens to the visuals, just out of curiousity, if you set the mission to be a Subspace Mission? :drevil: ;7
-
that is Soooooooo cool!
questions:
is there gonna be:
- the tank?
- powerups?
- score?
the planet u showed (cornelia or something wasnt it?) in the first set of screenies looks amazing!
the arwing tho... i remember it being a lot... fatter... then that...

awesome....if you manage to include the bit where you fly INTO the bigger ships and blow up it's reactor Starwars style...i will be your servant....nothing kicks more ass than that...

Yea. Axem beats him with a stick :D

Done some Falco voices :) http://www.game-warden.com/forum/showthread.php?p=10423#post10423

Wow, pretty good. :eek2:
It's not 100% like the original, but very close to it.
I really start considering voice acting now. :)
-
Once your ships get mapped... :nervous:
-
:) Don't worry. I still owe you one for this. We're going to update our alpha package as soon as we got some missing textures.
So until then there is no need for this fighter to be mapped. Although I'll still have to texture it... well, it's not that complex.
But I guess I'll have to spend a lot of time for the shine map.

I always liked the ships from the planet Fox's friend Bill was from (stared with a 'K' I think?) in Starfox64.. anyway, by chance might we get to see those as a model?

Oh, the dog? Yea, those ships were pretty cool, it'd be awesome to see them in action :)

Cheers DaBrain, this mod is my most anticipated one, I've always been a StarFox fan.
Katina was always my favourite level because you got the impression you were part of a massive battle rather than just you against a bunch of enemies.
-
Is Raa interested in joining the team? Or is he too busy?
-
Too slack more like... :p
-
I'm not joining... no.
*sets Axem on Grug*
I don't really have it in me to focus on yet another mod... since as it stands, I've lost focus on all of the ones I am a member of currently.
-
:p
Can't blame 'em for trying. ;)

:) Our staff just got bigger in the last days.
When Raa completes to UV map, he has done pretty much for us. This map is very important for us. :)
-
I have one of the sections almost completed. It all depends on if you want a different map for each subobject, or to use the same image file for the entire model. It's possible to do so either way, since mapping per subobject is how the HTL engine works, right?
-
Yes, but I think one map will do. Or better - one map is the optimal way.
-
Not really. It's only optimal in terms of download size. Since they're each individual subobjects, they could each use a seperate map and not hinder perfomance.
-
I still cant beleive those pics came from the FS2 engine. Wow..
-
You betta believe it.
-
a year or so from now after I have finished fully integrated and bugfixed the materials system, someone get me to make a tarain engine for FS, I have some good ideas for one. I'm thinking useing a radial subdivision of the surface and updateing it every two or three seconds (would be better if it could take advantage of multi-threading) based on the player's position above the surface. the idea would be rather than a square grid your have the point directly below the player on the surface act as the center of a bunch of concintric circles with axiese spreading out acting as a polar grid, width of the circles and number of axies would be a function of altitude.
I've never seen this sort of implementation performed so I am quite interested in how this idea would work out. but I think it would provide the absolutely best method for both getting the most amount of detail near the player and culling unneeded geometry from rendering.
-
Some usefull links perhaps?
http://terraform.sourceforge.net/
http://www.pandromeda.com/products/
Mojo world used to be partially open source I think. Some interesting technology though.
Imagine real planets ingame, ie you can fly around the whole world as it generates on the fly. Something like that would be cool. :)
-
@Bob That sounds pretty damn cool.
So many postings without a pic...
Well, it's WIP.
Guess the planet. ;)
-
Hmm...can't remember the name, but it's the one with "The Forever Train" in Star Fox 64, isn't it?
Wait, wait! Macbeth?
-
good ol' shake-a-spear....i enjoyed blowing up that train; never quite understood how the train was such a threat though...
Bob...that method you describe sounds interesting, but how would texturing work? (not trying to point out a problem; i'm just curious to understand how it would work, heheh)

you mean do it the same way frontier or orbiter does it? so you can actually do a re-entry and such. that and some newtonian and you can make freespace an actual sim. perhaps an aerodynamics engine as well. gravity and actual ground unit support. id like 3d planets for orbital bombardment missions. the battle for vasuda for example.

Well in this shot it's pretty much 50:50. There are a lot of 'real' asteroids in the shot.
It's a small field with 256 real asteroids. ;)

Cool Katina fighter. :)

Damn, I love Starfox (as the username SLIGHTLY suggests) !!!
That asteroid belt sure looks cool, and the Atmospheric/Ground missions look even more amasing. Can't wait, just cant wait....

Hehe, I just found this:
http://www.gamekult.com/pc/forum/lire_157818_page13.html
(On the bottom of the page.)
Looks like MetalDestroyer is doing some FS2 advertising.
@starfox :) Be patient, as soon as we finish the first mission thing will move faster. And even right now there is a lot of progress.
Man I feel so slow... I'll get back to work on somehting now. ;)
Just to defend myself - I've a fair ammount of problems in real life right now.
Well, no problem, but it's really stealing my time. :doubt:
-
my biggest distraction to my virtual-endevours is always RealLife in general, heh
-
LOL Man our stuff is getting p1mped everywhere and we've done about 10% of the advertising ourselves. This is great...our project is generating so much interest and it's so far from done. I only hope that the final product will impress and satisfy the expectations of the general populus.
-
Hehe, So you understand French ^^
-
Not a single word.
Edit: Well, my sister translated a few things for me. :)
She learns French it at school. I wanted to learn it too, but even though my school offered it, they never got a teacher for it... so better - no teacher had enough time. Well, thanks. :(
Now I'll never learn it. :(
I bet they offered it again, right after I left the school...
-
Damn it ^^
-
Yea. I looked at it and saw it was all in French...then for a slight minute I thought it was all in German cuz well...DB is German. Then I said no...I took a bit of French before.
Basically, I could understand things when I saw a link to our SoL preview :D

Time to bump this:
I've released two (older) clips, that should give you a pretty good picture of the multiplayer gameplay.

I know I'm probly gonna be whacked for this but............... what is Starfox?
-
He he he he. You're either young or lived under a non-having NES or Super NES rock...
If you had either of those however, it is a "whacking" offfense... ;7
-
Young?
since when is 14 young?
I feel like an old man.....................
:(
I just never got into Starfox, I guess the name kind of deterred me for some reason.... :wtf:
-
Well... there are a few people who don't know StarFox and many FS2 fans that may not be interested in it. So it's quite a challenge to create a good game with this name.
SoL will feature some very innovative gameplay. Especially for FS2 standards.
And of course you'll get a crazy ammount of flashy effects. ;)
And when I was 14 I thought I was old too... but that changes... I guess you're 'old' for your whole life.

ooooh, purdy
-
Looks awesome...can't say much more....
By the way, if I may ask...are any of the Wolfens (Starwolf fighter) completed yet ?
I've looked forward in modelling that ship, but I lack sufficient image material...
The SF Assault Wolfen, is the one I'm truly interested....
-
The second gameplay trailer shows the Wolfen (rather short and in the end of the clip). But we've a better model in the works.
BTW ... you're interested in modelling for us?
-
I'd love to DaBrain, but my modelling skills are not very sharp atm....but I'm getting better, after all practice is key to success in any endeavor.
*Goes to model some more models* ;)
-
Well, show me something. We also have some simple models on our list. ;)
-
Say, have you made/planned to make the Great Fox?
-
Yes, it's a WIP model. Atalhlla is working on it.
It's needed for the third mission.

It's needed for the third mission.
Excellent. Intercepting anti-starship missiles, perhaps?
-
Nope, the thrid missions will feature a scenario that hasn't been in any SF game before. The solution will be very starfox-ish though. ;)
No spoilers. :p

I'm guessing atmospheric entry, Or maybe............Grr i give up :(
-
Although that wasn't really correct, it was a pretty good guess.
You'll see a large part of Corneria in that mission.
-
Hmmmmmmmm, Could it be a fighter launching from a capship in atmosphere then?
*No comment equates to a yes in my book ;7
-
Ok... If you really want to push me to answer that...
No! :p
-
The first show of whether Slippy is male or Female?
