Title: Freespace "Final Refrence"
Post by: JoeLo on June 06, 2005, 05:42:37 pm
If this pans out it will be a fan agreed conlusion to Freespace. It should be viewed as the official story line. In essence it would answer things that were left open and FREDers or other campaign makers could use that a a refrence point.

   1.What happened to Bosch\ETAK\NTF
   2.Why star destroyed?
   3.What went down with HOL?
   4.Why didn't they build a new Hades?

No.

EDIT: Just so that no one will wonder why and keep this thread alive by asking questions; it'd be dumb to do this, because A) Everyone has their own ideas about what happened, B) You could never get them to agree, C) A lot of user-made campaigns are already based on differing aspects, D) It wouldn't be very fun anymore if we had to toss everything because *we* decided what was cannon, and E) if :V: didn't make it, it's not canon.

I believe the Paradigm Shift came as close as it could to this idea, before it flopped.

Was the PS plot ever published?

If not, will it be?

And we'd agree to let someone with eleven posts lead this project which should never happen? I think not.

Since when are we judging people by postcount ?

I find these threads both irritating and amusing.  In every single thread, the poster seems to think that he's the only person in the entire history of the forum who's thought of the idea.

Unfortunately, JoeLo, this kind of project has been tried many, many times over the years, with varying degrees of success.  And although there are many campaigns that take place after FS2, it's commonly recognized that it would be nearly impossible to design a campaign that answers everybody's questions to everybody's satisfaction.  Visit karajorma's FAQ (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/intro.html) for more information.

From my FAQ
How about we get the community together and write our own FS3?
After questions about FS3's release date this is one of the sorest points in the community. Posting a topic like this on one of the Freespace boards is actually more likely to get you insulted that simply asking when FS3 is coming out. While that question is merely naive this one carries a rather subtle insult. After all if the solution is so simple wouldn't the community have to be idiots not to have thought of it before? The fact is that the idea has been brought up several times before. It came up shortly after the FS2 source code was released when for the first time not only could we make a new story for FS3 but also improve the engine to do it. The idea was rejected then for several reasons and continues to be rejected every time it comes up for many of the same ones.

    * What would the plotline be? - The various members of the community have their own viewpoints of where the FS3 plotline would go. Furthermore we've had several years to become convinced that our particular plotline is the best one. It would be very hard to persuade the community to rally around a single official storyline for FS3. In fact the only thing that the community would rally round would be an official plotline from [V] but they continue to play their cards very close to their chests. Without this the community tend to go by the motto that "If it isn't [V], it ain't FS3".
    * Who would play it? - The entire community would know large portions of the plot line so who would the campaign be for?
    * Who has the time? - Most of the community are working on their own campaigns already. To do this would mean that they would have to give them up for the duration of the project.

Since a fan made FS3 would be no more official than Inferno or Derelict or any of the other campaigns already released or currently in production most people don't feel there's much point. Many of these mods are our own visions of FS3. There is no need for a semi-official one.

There should be a link with big capital letters to your FAQ at the forum index, so all the new ones would see it and read it. :D

He hasn't posted anything else that would indicate he's unqualified to lead a project like that, so I fell back on the old "we don't know you" line.

Sorry feel stupid... make a sticky to Kajamora's faq. That would make it a lot easier for newbs.

The Wiki is the official Freespace FAQ really as it is a community effort. Mine is more unofficial because it's basically my viewpoint on things.  (although a lot of people still find it useful).

There's a link to the wiki at the top of the forum, right up there next to "members" and "log out".

EDIT: Not to mention that 99% of the people who post this stuff never read stickies anyway.
