Title: LAN play on FS2Open
Post by: Grimmeehh on June 07, 2005, 07:34:20 am
Hey, I am trying to play FS2Open on LAN, it works fine until i get into the game.

The second client (the one connecting to the server) doest work properly.

His top speed is 25ish, cant fire any primary weapons cant lock targets..

All chat is there, but garbled.. like it is in some missions with interferance.

as far as i can see both computers are running the same version with the same files.

Using the "Old engine build" by following the wiki, i get some errors and once in the multiplayer game it crashes. netd is down and i frankly dont really understand whats going on

is it not built to work anymore?

That's pretty odd.

How do both computers treat the single player game?

For your infromation, 'Using the "Old engine build"' is not actually FS2Open.

As for LAN play being broken, ty connecting to the IP address of the server on the lan with IP connect.

Otherwise, i believe there is a multiplayer test this weekend.

I assume that he means he tried the old build after SCP failed but it isn't that clear.

Yeha i wa sin a hurry. i tried the old build after the other failed.

AS far as i can tell both PCs run the game campaign flawlessly, Ive completed the whole thing on my PC, and halfway through the FS1 campaign (but unfortunately stuck as a mission keeps crashing on me)

Ive tried every setting under the sun on multiplayer, butwhen i  get it connected one client simply doesnt work, acting asif all its subsystems are broken when they arent (no, support doesnt fix them) and running at a max speed of about 25..

Cant understand whats going on at all :(

also- putting the ip in had no effect.

What (precise) version and settings do other people use for LAN/multiplay ? (multi options, tcp/ipx, multidata whatever, anything and everything)

Oh and i will try to be around for some of the multitest.. but unfortunately being in the UK makes it somewhat difficult as its so late.

Multiplayer in general is, um, not quite at the state that would be desirable. I've had the problem as well, that immediately at the start of a multi mission, your ship is damaged and all subsystems destroyed by some invisible force (the ghost of the matrix?). I've seen at least one other report of this, might have been in Mantis, even.

Anyway, there's nothing you did wrong. It's the game...

Well, i thought it might be but people must have been playing at one point on some version so i figured there must be a way to get it to work..

No matter though, ill try and be about for the multitest tomorrow night.

I've also been having trouble with TCP play on the 3.6.5 build.  I have no settings turned on, and I can get into the creating a game screen perfectly.  As soon as I click accept, I get a blank screen, then it crashes.  I tried running it under compatability mode for win 98/me, and this time I got a flash of the next screen with a loading message before it crashed.

My system specs:

Windows XP Pro
Geforce FX 5200
512 MB RAM
integrated sound card
Athlon XP 2600+
integrated ethernet

Not sure what else there is that I can tell you.  Any ideas?

For me, one of the recent builds after 356 worked fine. Two computers with Windows XP, one of them hosting, and one with windows ME. No special settings. Dunno if it'll work now, and no time to test either.

Actually, on the May 22nd build the all subsystems destroyed thing happened to me in Single Player. Whenever a support ship would dock with the ship, all subsystems set to 0 and then it started to fill my secondary's. Strange sh!t indeed... o_O
