Title: How do you Make FS2 .MVE Sequences?
Post by: wolfpackvisual on June 07, 2005, 08:40:34 am
How do you make a Freespace 2 .mve file??  (Thats the Freespace 2 FMV Movie File format)

Is it an .avi? .mov?  Is there a program to convert avi to .mve?

Anyway, I desperately want to know so I can make some nice FMV Sequences for a new, or rather new version, of a campaign.  I am working on Allied Forces™ v2.0 - which will be have all new skins and beams and such in high res now.  As well as higher quality wav music.

If you don't know Allied Forces™ was a campaign that took place in a universe alternate to that of FS2.  I basically just created a story I wrote as a campaign using FS2's engine.  The story is undergoing some minor changes (to comply with the prequel novel).

So any help would be greatly appreciated!  I have looked around the net and come up with nothing.  If you want to play the original Allied Forces™ campaign you can get it here
>>http://www.wolfpackalliance.com/visualstudios/projects.htm (http://www.wolfpackalliance.com/visualstudios/projects.htm)<<
Or on the campaign lists at Volitionwatch Archives (although their copies of Allied Forces are truncated).  Be advised though, a lot of the story in the handbook (regarding Eagle Claw™ and Wolf Pack Self Defense Force™) will be changed in the new version 2.0 to comply with the novel.

Thank You

Whoa! I remember playing that years ago! It was pretty good - you had really cool white skins for lots of ships (the Hecate and the Thoth in particular), and I asked you if I could use them. I've still got it on my other hard disk. Not finished the campaign yet though... :nervous:

:welcome:

With regards to cutscenes, you can use .avi files now, as the SCP has made it possible to use them. I think there's an avi-mve converter somewhere, though I wouldn't know where to find it. I strongly recommend you check out the SCP's forum, as all the info is there. Enjoy your stay, and good luck with the mod. :)

Just looking around at all the new screenshots really shows you how much things have changed since 2002.

I just want to get a sense of closure and make this look better than it did way back then.  Hoping I can release it, or at least a bit of it, by June 29 - the 5th year anniversary of the original release.

Those white skins were made in PSP as well!  I didnt have Photoshop or Fireworks back then, btw.

Funny this should appear today. I added a section about mve movies to my FAQ only this weekend.

Basically there is a program called AVI2MVE that as far as I know will allow you to make your own mve files. Unfortunately I can't give you a link to it here even if I remembered the website I found it on since encoding mve files is exactly the sort of thing that has apparently brough Interplay knocking on other sites.

Interplay may be half dead at the moment but we all know that their lawyers are probably the hardest thing to kill.

As pyro stated avi versions will play just fine in SCP versions. In fact shipping MVE files would actually cut down your audience most likely because the most active part of the community tends to use SCP and it can't play MVE.

I found AVI 2 MVE.  I didnt realize it was considered a proprietary format by Interplay though.

Still, aren't source code versions of FS2 unstable?

Not most of them.

Use FSOpen, it's worlds better than FS vanilla, and if you want all the updated visuals, you're going to need it. Before you ask "how do I get it set up" go to the Freespace Source Code Project forum, read the various stickied threads, and read the wicki at the top of the forum. They'll tell you everything.

On top of that, use the AVI format for custscenes when you use FSO. Then you won't run the risk of Interplay looking for some cheap last minute cash and suing your behind.

They used to be. Now, once you work out the occasional initial bug or two (and generally you don't even get them) most of the non experimental, official builds are almost as stables as Vanilla ever was.

If not better.

Man you missed a good three years of being impressed, so there's a lot you can dig up and find that'll blow your mind, or your graphics processor, whichever comes first.

Enjoy your stay.
