Title: TBL Differences...
Post by: wolfpackvisual on June 08, 2005, 12:44:42 am
I've looked through the media vp files at all the nice specular effects and such but what is a .dds file?  Are they necessary to create new beams?

In addition, the old Allied Forces™ MOD used new ships and weapons tables which changed everything.  FS2 just overrode the tbl files in your personal tables folder, but apparently FSO parses them, as I get a crash whenever I try to run FSO with my older, modded ships.tbl in it.  Something like Expect int. found ("Mass Driver" ...) and it listed a couple of the other custom weapons I had added.

Is there anyway to make FSO believe that the tables in your tables folder take precedence over the ones in the newer vp.s?

How have you organised your files? The best way to do things is like this.

Put the media vp files in your Freespace 2 folder. Put your mod in a folder called wolfpack. Put the tables either in a vp or in Wolfpack\data\tables.

In the launcher choose Features>Select Mod and pick your wolfpack folder.

That is the best way but any file in Freespace2\Data or one of its subfolders will always override something in the freespace vp files.

dds is a compressed texture format, using it gives some pretty good performance boost, dds is lossy but with compression ratios up to 8x its worth it. low res effects are better off using tgas though. if you use dds you might as well go for high res stuff.

Hello Alex. You probably don't remember me from three years ago:(  Anyway I really enjoyed your take on a space story. Very creative and involved story.

Nah, I did not BETA test for you, but I had e-mailed you about your storyline in the mod. It reminded me of a storyline by a German Company that was trying to make a space sim like Freespace in an alternate verse. I was hired to do some of the missions and develop the campaign.

Anyway, your creative endevours are much appreciated. I have a storyline for Freespace2 that has been on the back shelf since then. Now with all of the enhancements and the ability to d/l larger campaigns with sound included, it is worth making missions.
Inferno with the EA appeals to me and fits nicely into the story I wanted to tell. Can't wait for the full release of your mod V2.

Alex Harris?... *remembers the name from somewhere*... Oh yeah! You made Allied Forces or Jakewar or whatever that campaign was called. It was pretty fun. Welcome to HLP finally.

Thanks for that, I'll put them in their own folder.

To answer where I have been ... I dropped out of FS2 in 2002 because, after designing the first few missions of Allied Worlds™, (prequel to Allied Forces™) I was dissapointed with how I would have to change the story to fit the game.  And ultimately decided a game was not the best way to tell it.  All of the AF series is about Fox,  Allied Forces is in itself a less cinematic story, so it was easy to transition it to the game, but Allied Worlds is much more movie-like, and I was having to write basically a spin off to make the game.  So it was dropped after 5 missions.

Anyway!  After showing the story around I'm making some slight changes for V.2.0.  To comply with the new re-writes.  Most prominantly in v2.0
-- Jacob Nataäs is now Jacques deNétas. (A more correct French variant of the original name, because after reading up on it, there's no ä is french, i think.)
--And the Eagle Claw and Wolf Pack aspects of the story is going to be modified a bit, again to comply with the prequel novel.
--AND, if you didnt play 1.5 (which hardly anyone did because it wasnt on the Volition Archives) the FoJ is now NMA (Nétas Military Alliance).  This is mainly to give these forces a more realistic name, which was the primary complaint after showing off the original story to people.
