Title: Images in sig.
Post by: achtung on June 08, 2005, 12:48:45 am
how do you insert images in your sig here?  And how do you hyper link them?

You don“t.
Avatars are only permitted to project members, and sig images are not allowed, to save bandwith.

It also makes the forums look a bit cleaner too...I hate browsing game forums where somebody has an animated .gif that's twice the size of his post.

We don't allow images in sigs. They really clutter up the place and it's very inconsiderate to those who aren't on broadband.

I think we used to, a while back. Like way back when.

And I hate when some people have three banners in their sig. It makes the posts look really messy. That's why like HLP, this place looks clean. As Sol said.
.
.
Can I have an avatar? ;)

Way back when HLP first migrated to vB I think, users were allowed avatars. They were only gallery avatars, you couldn't upload your own. It got shut down pretty quick though because the project kiddies considered the idea of lowly groundlings getting free access to something they had to work oh-so-hard for an insult to their egos :rolleyes:

Sig images though, even if you're on broadband, are a crime against humanity and must be destroyed at all costs.

depends on the sig image :p

if it's actually related to, say, a private project of yours.. and isn't colossal and animated..
like thus:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v625/Turnsky/ffc150ad.gif)
it wouldn't be so much of a problem... but when something that's absolutely huge, an animated gif that's 300 k or more in size, that'd be irritating to no end..

same goes for avatars:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v625/Turnsky/ffc100x100ad.gif)

[/blatant plug] ;) :p

:p (Shameless!) As much as I like those graphics, I still think sig images aren't so great. Too often I feel that in forums that allow them, I have to mentally sift out the images everytime... it's like there's more sig than post. :nervous:

That's because there usually is...

As I said, they're a crime against humanity and any board admin that allows them should be shot.

Sadly I must agree with the admiral. Sig images are usually an annoying attribute of those 1337 k1dd135 on haXX0r forums.

I just love huge, animated sigs with at least 20 lines of stupid stuff like

i wuv charlene

<3

~~~ :) ~~~
..g3r0D is my love don't insult him ok .....
laffo
SIERRA FOR FREESPACE 3
... And so on. Imagine that on epilepsy-causing colors and animated huge smilies and you have ~90% of BBs. Great. Awesome. Some places limit the sig sizes and it sometimes works well. Sometimes not.
Avatars would be nice though. :(
Images in sigs and avatars are annoying and consume bandwith, like those three minute animated clips people have in their avatars.
Turnsky has already shown that you can bypass the ban on sig images by simply using the same images in your normal posts. Would those people get in trouble? ;)
Post by: Setekh on June 08, 2005, 09:16:33 am
Well, if someone was actually persistent enough to manually add it into every single one of their posts, and it was becoming obtrusive, we would probably have a word with them. It really just makes the whole place ugly when every thread is full of them.
By the way, I can't find a rules thread for this forum. Usually, they're in the Sticky list, but it doesn't seem to be here. When I searched for 'rules', the thread on the top was this one.
I say that if you don't have higher than 150 posts, you don't get a signature.  If you don't have higher than 500 posts, you shouldn't have an avatar.  I also say that if you don't have higher than 1000 posts, you can't have sig images.
And use the warning level system.
Title: Images in sig.
But then certain spammers would be allowed sig images, while productive, yet quiet members wouldn't.
I say let's keep things the way they are. :)
As pointed out, the problem with any post-based privilege system is that you rapidly get lots of spammers. Besides, avatars should be more special than that; anyone can spam, but it takes commitment and skill to be a part of a hosted project. As I've said before, when things are in short supply, they are worth more - like back when we let people pick their own titles. That was dumb - people's titles became meaningless and not worth anything. :no:
Btw, what is the limit of sig? How many characters it can have?
Title: Images in sig.
Post by: pyro-manic on June 08, 2005, 10:17:04 am
I don't think there is a limit, but they become rather offensive after a while - 20-odd lines of text in many colours distracts from the content of the actual posts, and takes up space. Hell, I drastically pruned my sig recently because it was far too big for my liking (about 10 lines IIRC) - I much prefer it now. Nice and simple...
Title: Images in sig.
Post by: Setekh on June 08, 2005, 10:17:58 am
I don't think a limit is enforced at the moment. However, if they start getting around 8-9 lines, and we notice, we'll clamp down on it.
Title: Images in sig.
Post by: Unknown Target on June 08, 2005, 10:41:51 am
We don't need a rules thread because if a newbie gets out of line, we generally "remind" them of what they're doing incorrectly. We haven't had a major problem thus far with anything, and besides, things are fine as they are. Why do we need to start adding limits and more rules and stuff? It would only serve to make HLP more like all the forums that we try to avoid.
That's what I'm most worried about with all these new members; that we'll become just like the spam-filled myriad of other Gamespy forums, and we will lose what makes HLP unique among the web. I say keep things as they are.
I was goin g to put small images like
(http://toastytech.com/evil/duh.gif)
and
(http://toastytech.com/evil/ieisevil.gif)
one of those two and one of he smaller firefox adverts.
Thats what makes this forum great no ridiculous rules bull just follow proper nettiquete to a point and don't anger the admins:D
Title: Images in sig.
Post by: Unknown Target on June 08, 2005, 12:17:22 pm
Those A) Could be considered offensive to some, and B) why do you need them anyway? There's no point ot them, just say what those say in text. Less load times for the less connection gifted, and no big flashy things in our faces all the time.
The reason we're not over-moderated like other forums is because 99.9% of our forum members are either experienced and/or follow the basic rules.
Title: Images in sig.
Post by: achtung on June 08, 2005, 12:19:49 pm
Well yea I could see that but what about the firefox advert?  And yea I guess I could just put a firefox link in my sig.
Title: Images in sig.
Post by: Unknown Target on June 08, 2005, 12:20:13 pm
Notice it's pretty much only admins that have those :p
This forum is pleasent to surf because I don't have to constantly disgregard a bazillion different annoying flashy icons under everyone's name.
Title: Images in sig.
Post by: Ransom on June 08, 2005, 12:25:59 pm
I don't really mind small 90x30 or so sig images, provided they actually have a purpose (like what Turnsky said) and aren't just there because the user felt like having something there. But bloated 480x60 banners should die. And I don't really care about avatars as long as they're no bigger than 100x100.
Though, doesn't a newer verson of vB allow users to disable avatars and sig images and such in their settings?
I hope I fall into those criteria
200th post!
Post whoring makes you fall out of that criteria :p
Anyway, why do you need an image sig? They serve no purpose other than annoyance/bandwith hogging (unless they're for a usefull purpose, like determining which projects a poster works for).
If only I could do anything with modding, I can't even FRED, or edit tables!  And hey! be quiet the gnomes will here me, I don't want them taking my underpants again. :nervous:
Post by: Unknown Target on June 08, 2005, 12:40:29 pm
Well, then learn how to mod. HLP is the best place to learn that stuff :p
It's not that hard. Just look in the wikki first, and search. PLEASE don't post another topic asking about how to do it, it's all explained in the wikki and in the various threads all over the forum.
And still, why do you need an image sig that bad?
Title: Images in sig.
Post by: achtung on June 08, 2005, 12:44:41 pm
I don't anymore I'm past that point in my life now.:D  Since I learned it could only be done by an admin I was just asking in the first place you know and see I even put a link in.
Or you all could just disable sigs. Makes the entire forum look cleaner.
Title: Images in sig.
Post by: Unknown Target on June 08, 2005, 03:27:23 pm
That's taking it a bit too far. A lot of people use their (text) sigs for informational purposes, and it's nice to have a few quotes here and there. The only text sig that's close to being annoying is that one guy's, the one with the big long stream of colors in a rainbow. But sometimes you have to take the bad if you want the good :)
Title: Images in sig.
I'm saying use the per-user setting. Just disable it for yourselves.
Wouldn't it be easier not to have image sigs in the first place?
There will never be signature images here so long as I'm an admin.  Don't even bother proposing ways of having them, because they won't be adopted.  Period.
As UT said, you've come to the right place. Read up, ask polite questions, and give it a go. You don't even need anything except for Wordpad to edit tables. :)
Indeed. Just make sure you search first and ask politely when you can't find the answers yourself - generally speaking, most of the modders around here have answered the same questions dozens of times, and a rude request is not the best incentive to answering in a helpful way. ;)
