I've been working for ages now of a 55 page long, font size 10 encyclopedia of the Freespace Universe and I've just finished V.1. It has over 600 articles from The GTD Bastion to Molybendium Plating, and I'm hoping it will be of some use to Modders and FS Fans in general.
I know there will be a few mistakes, so if you notice any, no matter how small, please tell me. Also, any suggestions would be more than welcome. I'm already working on V.2 which will have colour coded enteries, pictures and more detailed information on some of the more obscure ships.
I've uploaded it to the HLP Submitions section, so with any luck, it will be up soon. If not, I'll try to upload it somewhere else soon. It's in PDF format.

Right now, i'm adding the images and correcting some of the mistakes\tyos which I have found myself. I'm also flushing out the information a bit to make it more interesting.

I have already submitted the first version to HLP's submit files bit so all I can do now is wait.
It has quite a few mistakes which I have corrected already. Most of them were little things like typos, or enteries I forgot to put in or are which are in the wrong place. A lot of them are already corrected, but I'm sure there are a lot more waiting for attention.

FZ seems to have a lot of info - esecially in the timeline. Do you mind if I use some of it in the next version? You will be credited, ofcourse.

Don't get too excited. It is a work in progress and although it has 600+ enteries, a lot of them are only one or two sentences long becasue I could find out so little about them.
Here is an extract from it:
Aeshma, SF - The SF Aeshma is a relatively rare, and only recently encountered, class of Shivan fighter. It appears to be a heavy attack fighter, like the Basilisk. With a low known top speed, Aeshma's seem to target slower-moving vessels, such as bombers, freighters, and gas miners. Their powerful lasers make them a danger to all such craft, so they must be engaged and destroyed as quickly as possible. Fortunately, their low speed makes it easy for a fighter to do this. On the other hand, their hull and shield strength is slightly above average, which might hinder a pilots efforts. Because the Aeshma is a recently encountered ship, its true capabilities are still unknown.
Aesir, GTFr (Secrets Revealed) This GTI Poseidon class freighter was sighted during the GTAs attack on the Jotunheim. It is possible that the ship was transporting materials to the GTD Hades but no one is sure.
Agrippa, GTC (Argonautica) - The Agrippa was an Aeolus class cruiser assigned the task of escorting an Argo class transport carrying technicians to the heavily damaged GTD Aquitaine during the midst of the Second Great War.
Ahmose, Admiral - (Rebels and Renegades) Admiral Ahmose was a Vasudan Admiral who acted against orders when he sent his fleet to attack the NTF Iceni. The Admirals attack almost blew the cover of two GTVA special Operations pilots on a mission to learn more about the ETAK Project. Fortunately, the attack was repelled.
Air Locks - Air locks have been used since space travel began, and are no less common today than at any other time in space travel history. They allow a man to leave a ship without the atmospheric integrity of the ship being compromised. They work using a simple compartment system. The user enters the first air tight door which closes behind him. All the air is sucked out and a second door is opened to the vacuum of space. On his return, air is pumped in to the compartment, equalising the air pressure with the rest of the ship before he can continue. Air locks are also found in Shivan ships as well, which is strange as the Shivans seem to be able to survive in a vacuum any way, so there would be no need to separate it from the rest of the ship.
Akh-12 Engine - Designed by the Akheton Corporation for use on the GVB Bakha, the Akh-12 model is masked and baffled to make it harder for heat seeking missiles such as the Rockeye to attain a lock.

What I would like to see is a kind of FS encyclopedia which covers the names of the ship that have been in FS, FS:ST and FS2. Not the class name of the ship (Orion, Ravana) but where the name like Bastion, Galatea comes from, and if they have any real history.

I've actually done most of what you have asked for. All ships between FS1 and FS2 are there, and I have included some info on ships names such as the fact that the Galatea was named after Neptues Moon and as much info on their history as I could find out or reasonably assume as correct.
There isn't much history on the small '1 mission' ships though because I've tried to keep it all as factual as possible. If it wasn't mentioned in the actual game, or an official website, you won't find it in here and sdadly, not much was mentioned about the smaller ships.
Finding out what the smaller ships were named after seems to be a good idea though, and I'll try to include some of that info in the next version if at all possible. Thanks for the idea. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Culloden, I don't know if it'll help you any, but on my site ("http://www.geocities.com/sandvich/index.html") there's the Complete FS2 Ship List (FreeSpace 2 -> Notes -> Complete Ship List). It has, well... alot. All the warships that appear in FS2, as well as ship counts and the like.

Yeah, FRED Zone has something similar. CP5670 came up with his own list that you can all download as a txt. file. You can find it here:

Now this is really cool! And even more reason I can foresee it as a web document. You could use Atomz ("http://www.atomz.com/") to make the encyclopedia searchable, and with hyperlinks, you could make it cross-referencable(?). See starwars.com ("http://www.starwars.com/"), anywhere they mention Jedi or Darth Vader, the text is a link to info about it. So in your example from the encyclopedia, in the entry for "Ahmose, Admiral", the text "Vasudan", "NTF", "GTVA", "ETAK", etc, these would link to the encyclopedia entries for each.

I have been thinking about making it cross referencable, but I would take a lot of work and probably won't be for a good few months yet. I'll try to get a basic Web version up along with Version 3 which should be ready in a month or so.
Still no word on a release date yet. I've sent a copy to HLP, Volition Watch, and Freespace 2 Sector, so keep and eye on those websites. Hopefully some time tomorrow though - possibly tonight, but I doubt it.
It really depends on the webmasters now.

I've glanced at the encyclopedia, Cull. It looks REALLY good, but there are some typos here and there that I noticed, but that's no biggie. You DID say this was a work in progress.
I'll try to document the errors and point them out in an e-mail later on, but law school is starting to pick up the pace so it might not be until Christmas Break that I can get to it.

3rd Fleet, GTVA - The GTVA's 3rd fleet, based in the Capella System, was instrumental to protecting Terran-Vasudan
space during the closing weeks of the Shivan conflict, as well as the NTF rebellion that preceded.
Headed by the GTD Aquitaine, the fleet in general saved many lives before finally being disbanded and slit up after Capella's destruction.
Question: where do you get info about what happened after the FS2 campaign? After Capella blows, isn't that where the story ends? Or is there more in some multiplayer missions?

I was going to bring up the same issue. Shouldn't you stick with canon stuff Cull?

Yeah, this is a good point. We need to stick to the canon stuff. The entry about the 3rd Fleet being disbanded and split up DEFINITELY needs to be reworded or maybe deleted entirely. I'll be doing the editing for the the Encyclopedia soon enough. I haven't decided if validated mission stuff can be allowed in the encyclopedia, but that decision will be made later.

Version 3 is underway. I won't acctually compile it untill I know where all the errors are, but I'll let you know what I'm planning.

Seriously, you need to spell check the document... sometime I'll try to proofread it and note most of the errors I see. You need to spell check it though.

As for the typos, blame it on the keyboard. Half the keys are sticky, and dont work when you click on them. And I did spell check it, but obviously it didn't pick up all the mistakes.
