In an attempt to make my days more in exciting, I have switched over to the Dvorak key format. You should see how long it took for me to type this. Switching keys around on a laptop isn't as much an option really.
-
is that where it has all the keys in alphabetical order?
-
You've got waaay too much free time on your hands :p

The more common letters in the english language are closer to your fingers rest positions.
-
oh, so it's better. :)
-
...but how do you switch to that? And how do you know which keyes are which, without changing them all.....?
-
trial and error I suppose...
-
[q]how do you know which keyes are which
[/q]
with a butter knife, and a picture of what you're aiming for  :p
-
it's letters ae arainged to allow you to type faster, as opposed to the qwerty keyboard wich was designed specificly to slow typeing down so the mechanisms of the typerwiters of the late nineteenth centurey wouldn't get fouled up.

Yep, I do. ^_^

Like this (http://www.mwbrooks.com/dvorak/dvorkeys.pdf[/url)...
or this. (http://www.mwbrooks.com/dvorak/layout.html)
It'd be easier if I had a printer though.
-
There isn't any 'any' key?!?
-

And it failed miserably because people would still end up typing too fast for those machines to handle.
-
I typed a few times on a German keyboard, with just the Y and Z keys switched from QWERTY (and all the special characters changed). Drove me mad very quickly.
-
I've been typing Dvorak since last night :p
-
Well, it's less than 24 hours, and I've improved greatly. I'm referring to the diagram less. ^_^
-
i know where each letter should be, but have to pause and make sure i get it right...
*phew*
-
yeah that's insane :p i tried it once, and i'm sure i could've learned it, but every time i have to use another computer i had to switch back to the qwerty layout, so i just stopped... seems pretty cool though, it's definately something i'm going to learn one day
-
i am tempted to try and change the school computers to it :p
-
Just randomly swap a few caps over, you know, to get them used to it....
-
In case anyone is really interested in this subject, both the story that QWERTY was designed to slow typists down to minimize jamming, and the idea that the Dvorak keyboard is demonstably superior to QWERTY are untrue:

-
i don't really get the Dvorak keyboard layout. regular is just fine, and i'm so used to it i can type like a full sentence in 4-10 seconds. :D
-
I type slower than an arthritic ant, no matter what the layout....
-
I could hit 70+ WPM with QWERTY, but Dvorak is so much easier :p ...
Hardest part, is when you think of a letter, and the wrong hand reaches for it, across the entire keyboard :ick:

This is disputed:

I'm too lazy to read the long article at the moment. Regardless of what it says, I'm still going to try Dvorak. Anyone that doesn't want to doesn't have to.

seriously! :p
-
how would you play an FPS? WASD would be FUBARed
-
You could reconfigure your WASD to whatever it is under dvorak.
But honestly, who uses it today? anyone professionally? I guess it's a personal prefrence.

;7 That would be a great prank.

I've just done it to my computer here, and the teacher came over to grade it, and he went to type the comments right on the project, and it was all screwed up... So i pressed Ctrl-Shift and switched it back, and he asked me what i did, and i explained, and he gave me extra credit :p !
-
When I tried it out a number of months ago, I actually switched key positions of the keys on my keyboard. Was... interesting. I presume if one wanted to use it permanently, one could have a graphical overlay of some sort to rescuse any poor confused masses who come by to use one's computer.

What sort of project was it?
-
What does Dvorak have to do with keyboards?
-
Dvorak is an alternative keyboard format to QWERTY. Please read the first few posts for an explanation.

Or you could just ctrl+shift back to QWERTY.

It's a keyboard layout, not a composer. :)
-
It's also a common last name around here.

This is an exaggeration. It separates common letter pairs so people couldn't hit them so quickly that the mechanism jammed.
-
How is that different from what bob wrote?
-
Slowing someone down is not the same thing as seperating Q from U or A from M.
One can demonstrably design a keyboard intended to speed up your typing (in the same manner as Dvorak layouts) but which intentionally seperated common digraphs. In other words, the two things are not rigidly coupled.
-
Curse you QWERTY!!!!!!!!!!!! >.< I wonder how long it's going to take to get up to a decent speed?
