Try the FS2_Open launcher and see if that can detect it. You'll find it here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,28967.0.html). Just click the browse button and select official retail exes before choosing fs2.exe.

If it works you should find your card selected in the video tab.

This is assuming he has FS2_Open in the first place...

Yes, FSO would be able to detect it. I am assuming the video card you have is too 'new' for the old, retail launcher.

No it isn't. I gave him the link to the launcher for him to use with his copy of retail and gave him an explaination of how to use it to run the retail edition of FS2.

I think it best to see if we can get retail to actually run before pushing him in the direction of FS2_Open :)

Yes, but you need to get the FSOpen media VPs and exe. Do a search and/or visit the SCP forums.

He doesn't need to have the MediaVPs. I think he should make sure he can run FreeSpace by any means. the MediaVPs can make things slower and less stable, not to mention if he tries to use the MediaVPs with Retail. :nervous:

Believe me, if I use the MediaVPs and turn on some graphical effects, my FSO crashes in the FIRST minute of the mission. Most of the times, now and then it makes it until the second minute, but not often.

To put it simple: Do you have the latest drivers for your video card?

Yes of course i have the latest drivers and the game run very well right now with the FSopen, i was asking if it should show a great improvement over the retail game cause for me i wasnt able to play the retail game in the first place.

If all you have is the launcher and exes you'll see very little difference unless you turn shine and environmental mapping on (and they'll look rather ugly then).

Use the VP files however and the transformation is much more impressive.

My 9500 Pro, which is aroundabout the same age as the FX5200 is picked up just fine by the retail FS1 and 2 launchers. Even the Descent 3 launcher which is older than FSs picks up the Radeon. It's an odd issue you're having for sure, but I wouldn't put it down to the retail launcher right away.
