Check this out. This is from an Unreal Tournament mod, called Ultima Unreal.

Why is that an evil place? :nervous:

I've seen better....

Actually, it has been an Unreal Tournament mod, but they started using a different engine... that screenshot is from that new engine, btw.
-
Aw damn. Still, pretty amazing looking. Never mind then! :D

I'm not sure; you can achieve that look in a very simple way by using simple flat mapped planes for trees; unless you have alternate views, it'll look the same as something far more detailed.

That looks like a skybox to me.

I think it is actually do-able. I forget the technical name (imposters?), but it works by using a sort of procedural rendering; distant 3d objects are rendered as 2d sprites rather than models (because the distance of the view means you can't change perspective enough to notice).

billboarding.

Hmm. The close trees look pretty billboarded too. The edges look slightly wonky.
-
I agree. The whole thing looks two dimensional, just layered well. Save the sky. Sky is nice.

Nope, impostoring; I remember off of the muckyfoot website, which is archived here; http://web.archive.org/web/20021026003743/www.muckyfoot.com/downloads/tom.html
(it's used for plants in the Startopia biodeck section, incidentally)
The link is, of course, broken - I'm not sure if there's a mirror elsewhere. Shame, really; that webpage was a bit unique in giving lots on interesting teccy info as to what went behind the game.
EDIt; no it's not; here's a link http://web.archive.org/web/20021028041240/www.muckyfoot.com/downloads/tomsimposters.html

It's like a photo. I bet it's 2D.

FarCry uses similar technology.
