Title: Cutscenes
Post by: Alpha_13 on June 16, 2005, 07:42:53 pm
Okay, I've learned enough to know that FSO does not support the old Freespace and Freespace 2 cutscene formats. My question, is there a way to convert the ones I have into a suitable format or download them? If so, how would I go about implementing them? Also, I have the Freespace port and I was wondering if the same could be done for the old Freespace cutscenes as well?

Do a goddamn search, that's what it's there for.
FSO uses .avi format now. You can download the avi cut scenes somewhere on this forum, I don't know the exact location (that's what the search is for).
And I guess the same could be done for FS1 cut scenes as well, which are also available. But you'd probably have to edit the missions to make them play.

Post the links in here if you do find them, I'd like to grab them too. Plus it will be easier to find for future searches.

Here's a query. Does the FSO support DivX avi?

After some amount searching, I did find that. I am in the process of trying it out. Some of the links are broken so you're probably better off searching Google for the needed programs.

And yes, I think it supports any type of .avi as long as you have the codec to support it. I'm having some difficulty with the intro cutscene (weird chirping noises in the beginning and a frame error at the end), but other than that, no issues so far.

Yeah, I think I know what you mean ;)
I converted them myself to XviD and the Intro-Video ALWAYS haves this Problem.

You'll find that the movie I encoded myself also suffers from that. I have no idea why.

As for my movies page I'm aware that the link to MVE2AVI was broken (I rather carelessly broke a lot of links when I put the revised FAQ up in response to HLPs downtime in early April and I'm occassionally still finding them. What else did I break apart from that link though?

I got some of these cutscenes encoded with divx and when they play, I get desktop and the divx player taskbar icon is my start bar and the cutscene is very tiny in the upper left of my screen

Same problem here as the above poster. Cutscenes appear in tiny format in the upper left corner. This happens regardless of the built used (of the builds that play cutscenes in the first place).

This started happening after upgrading my DivX codec (I only have the codec installed. No DivX player or other extra software) from version 5.21 to version 6.

Before that, cutscenes only played sound/music, but no visual.

Hmm, i had that problem once with the top left corner, but only for one session of gameplay. You've tried restarting right? Closing any superflous programs?

That happens to me almost every time. It doesn't seem to have any relation to background programs, since I always run the game without any others. (I need all the RAM I can get!)

If two of you have would run the cutscenes through G-Spot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/) it might help us track down which codec your computers are using to play them. That might help track down what's causing the problem.

Simply run G-spot, drag and drop the movie onto it and tell me which codec is being used to decode it.

Post by: stavpoly4789 on July 06, 2005, 08:54:45 pm
g-spot says divx version 6.0.0.1571
However i am not sure but it seems as though it is minimizing the game when the cutscene comes up. it maximizes again, but it is in the corner. i had the problem with older codecs when i alt-tabbed and maximized again. It seems that when the codec loads it loads a program that minimizes the program and puts an icon in the task bar. sorry if im not being clear but i just got off a long flight.

I'm using the exact same codec as stavpoly. And mine does that minimizing thing, too. I figured that was a normal part of the playback.

Try using Taylor's build from June 2nd. It works for me; the only problem(which I've seen in other builds as well) is that occasionally, when loading a cutscene, it stops at the loading screen and plays audio. But then again, it happens less in this build than others. And I've had that minimizing problem as well, but this build is now my favorite because it doesn't do that.

Well, that worked as advertised. At least the first time I ran it. When I exited the program and booted it up again it did the same old minimize-then-play-tiny-movie thing all over again. However, reselecting the executable from the launcher before playing it causes it to behave perfectly.

Maybe it'll work if I just play directly from the executable instead of the launcher each time? I'll be testing that...

*EDIT* Nope, that didn't do anything different. I suppose I'll just have to reselect the executable each time.

*'NOTHER EDIT* Seems that method's not foolproof either. Perhaps someone who doesn't have this problem could state which codec version he uses?

Sorry for the necro, but I think we need an update to this.

I'm currently working on a small side project that aims to help total n00bs to the FS universe install FS2_Open, cutscenes, and anything else needed without any special knowledge or needing one of us around. Currently, I plan to do that with a CD image containing the latest stable FSO build installer and a ZIP archive containing a directory structure and files that will install the FS1 Port, AVI cutscenes, and cutscene support and multiplayer builds to the proper folders all at once. (Okay, I confess, this isn't so much for n00b support than it is for assisting certain people in my personal corner of Hell with the install process and speed up my own reinstallations after random virus #1771361 sodomizes my computer...)

I'm having trouble locating the AVI cutsenes. The FTPs are either dead or not cooperating with my client. The .torrent linked from Karajorma's FAQ is also down. (Or maybe it's the tracker)

Is there another source for these files, or am I in the unenviable position of having to convert them myself?

It is definatly not the hosting. I just tried to download them and they worked just fine.

It's no doubt my **** computer.

EDIT: Downloads now worked. Fault was a combination of Firefox' built-in download manager killing the system when the window was opened and my neighbors' daytime cable network killing P2P activity running into the night.

Now... what daily build(s) should I be including in this thing for cutscene support and multiplayer, other than 3.6.5?

Taylor's 03-01-05 build (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,29087.0.html) is the best like-for-like replacement for 3.6.5. and is generally rated as the most stable multiplayer build.

It's old but you shouldn't have any issues with it that you wouldn't get with 3.6.5 anyway.

I'm having the same cutscene problem as these guys and I had it with both versions of DivX mentioned.

(Well I'm having the minimize and small video in uppper left corner problem)

I went into debug mode and I copied and pasted this excerpt from fs.log since mantis is apparently down.

loading animated cursor "cursor"
ANI cursor with size 24x24 (25.0% wasted)
Ships.tbl is : VALID
Weapons.tbl is : VALID
cfile_init() took 129
opengl_minimize
opengl_minimize
Got event GS_EVENT_TEAM_SELECT (49) in state NOT A VALID STATE (0)
cf_get_file_list_preallocated looking for type=28, filter="*.pl2"
cf_get_file_list_preallocated looking for type=28, filter="*.plr"
ANI cursor.ani with size 24x24 (25.0% wasted)
Got event GS_EVENT_QUIT_GAME (5) in state GS_STATE_VIEW_CUTSCENES (38)

Freeing all existing models...

This is using fsport but the same thing happens with the main fs2 campaign.

Any answers are appreciated :)

I'm working on making a new compress of the FS2 and FS1 cutscenes.  They will be XVid with MP3 audio.  I recommend getting FFDShow (a Google search will turn it up) because it's a fantastic DirectShow codec that will play almost any form of video compressed in the last 5 years with some sort of intelligent codec.

Actually the XVid codec will play divx well enough to avoid this particular problem. Apparently the newest version of divx is responsible so letting XVid take care of the playback is one possible solution.

I don't have a FS1 Port mod folder.  All the port is is VP files so I put them in the FS2 folder.  Where do I put the cutscene avi files in this case?

just thinking that putting the port vps in the fs2 folder would create a conflict with the existing tables etc. or the existing ones would create a conflict with the ports. i think it is better to make a new folder and use mod

How can you insure Xvid is reading the cutscene instead of DivX ?

No idea. I think you can turn codecs on and off but you'll need someone more experienced than me to tell you how.
