I've had a lot of trouble with viruses for a couple of months now, and i've dealt with getting my connection getting blocked for too long now. i'm afraid to do anything since the viruses are infecting some of my computers critical components (explorer.exe, rundll32, etc), and i have too much **** to restore my comp to 'factory-fresh' condition. help?
-
Um, virus cleans?
You seem like a vrius-prone person...anyway, AVG Antivirus, and Spyware Search and Destroy are both free programs you can use. You could also just get the files you want, scan them and clean them, then erase your computer and reinstall.

anyway, the only reason i seem to be staying online is due to the fact i'm using Mozilla Firefox. :wtf:
-
Are you behind a physical firewall? If not, you might want to consider getting a router.

AVG, any anti-spyware software, and Zonealarm as a firewall
-
dunno where to get zonealarm. :nervous:
the AVG trial won't let me update the virus definitions, adaware won't delete this dll called DrPMon.dll (probably the key component of the ABI virus), and norton sucks...
give me some names here...
-
Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp)
As for the rest. Restart your PC. Press F8 a bunch of times and boot into safe mode. Run your virus checking and adware removal there.
-
Grab AVAST and MS Antispyware, restart in safe mode and let the scan&hunt begin!
-
Cobra, a good away to avoid virus is NOT to visit those XXX warez sites. Those will bury you under a huge pile of popups, and it´s very easy for a person to click the wrong place when in a frenzy trying to close down the massive popup assault on your computer. Clicking the "X-close" button only makes it worse.
[RANT]
I hate popups!! Popup creators should be hung by their balls, tarred and feathered, and then left for the vultures to pick their bones clean. But popup enabled virus creators should be shot, plain and simple.
[/RANT]
:ick:
-
Firefox doesn't get popups...
-
Yes, yes, AVG is your choice. It automatically updates itself, if the programme detects a new version is available.
*is reminded to install AVG after reinstalling the whole computer*
-
*suggests AVAST and to pay a visit to www.grc.com to check with shieldsUP if the firewall is working well*
That said, the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool is good for a quick fix before the antivirus scan... It will remove the most common viruses and ease the AV task.

Watch out if you leave your PC open for prolonged times as Zone Alarm as a nasty memory leak that will slowly eat up your RAM...
-
Make your RAM inedible. That will prevent ZoneAlarm from eating it.

i've got a friend suggesting Norton Internet Security. should i use it?
-
sygate is the way to go for a firewall

Norton = useless.
-
Try some smoothing ointment, that'll clear up those rashe....
Oh, computer viruses.
-
Norton = Resource hog
I use Mcafee Virus Scan corperate edition. It has a low profile and doesnt constantly leech off of my system resources.
-
heh. good thing the internet security installation froze then. :D
i ran an adaware scan while in safe mode and deleted a bunch of infected registry files. i should be ok for now. AVG did **** (weird), and safe mod wouldn't let me run norton. (wll, can't be TOO careful, i just wanted to get all the viruses off)

erm... what do you mean by that? like downloading or something?
-
No... if you leave your PC running, zonealarm will secretly, slowly, keep using more and more of your available ram.
-
I personally use Spybot and Norton, though it seems Spybot gets it all, leaving Norton to be a severe system hog.
Yes, use Adaware Spybot.

Strange....I've never encountered that AFAIK.
-
Well, me neither, but I don't use ZA. I was just explaining what Zarax meant.
-
What's AVAST and AVG, antivirus programs?
-
Yes, they are free (at least AVAST is) antivirus apps.
-
Interesting, I'd like to know more. Are they any good?

I'm currently using AVAST and I've been using it for more than one year... It is less resource consuming than norton (not quite hard) and it has yet to fail me on virus detection plus it updates virus signatures several times per week ensuring you won't be naked against newer infections.
Extra features are outlook, p2p and messenger shields which should offer extra protection there plus it hsa some other basic function against exploits (it detected the DSO exploits before SP2).
Coupled with MSAS it's nicely keeping the system clean and stable.
The only low sides are that it's slightly slower than some commercial products (but comparing it to corporate stuff like e-trust is a bit unfair on my side) and you have to re-register it (for free) every 14 months.
-
I run the basic Windows firewall, Ad-aware, Spybot Search and Destroy, MS Antispyware and AVG free edition. Not to mention Opera as my browser.
Nothing's getting in here, uh-uh :D
-
Yeah, once you establish a decent security set-up there's little that can harm you... Just do not install ActiveX from suspicious web sites and you will be safe ;)
-
I'd just like to add another positive vote for AVG. It's free and great. And the paid-for version is even better, and it's cheap. Well worth getting.
-
I use the free AVG as well.
-
well, after restoring my comp, now i have another problem. i can't seem to keep a connection to the internet for very long. like maybe 30 mins or so...

CURSE YOU COBRA!!!
Pfft. Well my PC's doing surprisingly well with Norton. And it's 7 years old. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/durisnonfrangor/sigh.gif)
