Title: For the old and bored...
Post by: Setekh on June 18, 2005, 08:16:21 am
I know this is rather ancient and random, but I understand a few people around were looking for something like this.

//www.3dap.com/hlp/staff/setekh

For those too lazy to make the click, it's just a thumbnailed listing of all the renders I've published (basically from 2001-3). This sort of thing would usually be accessible through the Array, but that thing has been 'down' since GS's dynamic server went partially screwy. Which was quite a while ago.

Brought back quite a few memories having a flick through this stuff, so I thought some of you might enjoy it. :)

Brings back memory's, and fills in gaps that I missed. :)

Nice collection there Setekh, you've certainly contributed quite a lot over the years. ;)

I haven't seen some of them yet!
Great jobs, Setekh.
Are all those yours?

Weren't you supposed to get back to rendering, Setekh? :p

you should get back into it, surely you have a free hour or two every once in a while.

It's funny how a lot of people have missed big chunks of it. There's quite a volume of work there... I didn't realise how much I'd actually produced in those quick two years. Yes TopAce, they're all mine.

As for getting back to it, there are few things I wouldn't give to be able  to return to my older days of glory. It sure was a heck of a lot of fun - and all the material is there for plenty of rendering (I always used to feed off of the mods around here - and there's a lot more to render now than there was three years ago!).

The truth, though, is that I've quite consciously devoted my time to other stuff - 'other' important things around HLP, family (with mum passed away and my sister moved out after graduating, that leaves my dad and brother and I at home - I take care of things, generally speaking), commitments to my church (leading a couple of youth groups in Bible study) and uni work too.

That, and the fact that I always put out my best work when I had sufficiently free time when all I could do was sit and render for days. I remember the summer of 2001-2, when I published something like 60 or 70 renders in just over a month... a couple everyday. When my creative juices get flowing, I can't stop. But when I don't get to devote enough time to it properly, it drives me mad. ;)

Whoah - I thought I'd seen everything you've done, but I'm sure I've never seen some of those.... Awesome stuff. Your composition is practically perfect. :yes2::nod::yes:

Perhaps you should set a bit of time aside for it - a couple of hours one night a week? Once a fortnight? I'd love to be able to see what SPIRE would make of something like bob's uber-ised Orion. Maybe you'll have more time over the summer...

Outta curiosity, whats up with those Dubhe themed ones? Is that supposed to be a mission?

Have you ever thought about learning to make Cutscenes?
Title: For the old and bored...
Post by: Setekh on June 18, 2005, 08:02:20 pm
Oh, and if anyone's curious, I added a few of my favourites from the old "FreeSpace Story" project. Those are old, I added an anchor for them:

www.3dap.com/hlp/staff/setekh/#fsstory

Thanks, Pyro. Composition was always my favourite part - that, and putting a story behind every one of my renders. Ironically, those two seem to be the elements most missing from the more recent crop of FS renders (though they're not all that recent anymore).

The Dubhe themed ones... I think I just really liked the name Dubhe, and was looking for an excuse to do something fun with the terrain I had built for myself (you can see the gridline version of it in the Sadon Valley pic). I suppose someone can make it into a mission (or a campaign) if they like... now that we have missions with terrain using the SCP, anything's possible. :)

In regard to cutscenes, I think I said to myself a long time ago that I would probably never do them. I never had a fast computer; just doing the stills and getting them right took me long enough, so I think I preferred to stay with what I could do well.

Yessss... all those 'story' renders were the ones I was wanting a while back, Setekh. Domo arigato.

Cool, I'm glad I found you/you found it, Ghost. By the way, was there a particular one you were looking for? I know the Lions' Den renders were a couple of my most favourite. :)

I was looking for "behemoth.jpg." That particular picture was amazing when I first saw it(still is; glad it's up there), although now that I look at it... it seems that the gunners on the Fenris and Rakshasa have really bad aim.

Yeah, that's partly because I hadn't yet come up with a convincing way to render explosions on ships. Okay, it's completely because of that. ;) You can see I developed my explosion rendering in lucifer-explode-prev.jpg and neptune-boom.jpg... but I wasn't really pleased with it until about century.jpg. After that, there were explosions a-plenty (e.g. covenant.jpg).

Hey Setekh, you should really find the time to make a few tutorials. Pass on your wisdom. :)

Well, sure! Go for it - just give the proper credit for the models and the render, as usual. Odd - I guess not many people had seen CB2 before; you're the second person in a couple of days to request to use it. :)

Well, I wouldn't deny the possibility of anything. It's not like I don't have any tricks left up my sleeve, y'know?

Maeg... no comment for you. Except for the fairly obvious statement that renders, in a sense, are not creative things themselves - they only ever bring out what's already there, even if it may simply have been unseen before. ;)

Hey The Spac, didn't realise you were another Sydneysider. Good on ya. ;) You're relatively new around here - you'd probably never seen them before, right?

And thanks, Andreas. I missed them quite a lot too. But soon enough, you'll all be seeing quite a lot of them. ;)

Steak, where'd some of these come from?  There are ships in there that I've never seen but which look really good.  In particular, the untextured ships here (http://www.3dactionplanet.com/hlp/staff/setekh/ts-compilation.jpg).  Some of this stuff goes back to the days before I was a regular, so a bit of it is new to me.

Hmmmm, those are definitely old. IIRC those particular ones were from a guy named Apothess - a real trueSpace whiz, but he never really entered the community very much. You can see his first post here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,508.0.html) (check out the thread ID in the URL!)... or you can check his profile (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=75) and the list of posts (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=86963) he made. I can virtually guarantee that all his stuff is probably gone, though. :(

Well, it's not like I did nothing with the Raynor... ;)

...though I admit, I wish I could have spent more time with it. I miss the days when I could just spent a day staring at a model and finding the most beautiful angles to show it off. :)

Yeah Nico, though I think you can agree that desperate times call for desperate measures. My life's changed a fair bit in the last twelve months.

WeatherOp... sadly, I think that super carrior remained in in its untextured form until Apothess left the community. I'd love to try and contact him again and see where he's at right now, though. :)

UT, you'd be surprised at just how simple SPIRE is and how little it can do compared to what's out there. It's just that when I render I'm mostly so excited about rendering that I pour heaps of time into it and experiment with lots of crazy stuff. That, if anything, is what gave my renders their distinctive look. ;)

Sorry Grug, I'm pretty clueless in regard to specifics with 3dsmax. :D

Hmmm, its usually the simple answer that is the last to be realized... :doubt:
Still, it would be nice to learn how to use the lighting glare effects etc properly in 3ds Max...

Look for the 'Blur fire' plugin; that's quite good IMO (and free).  I can't find a link for it justnow, unfortunately.

And look up the info on combustion in the max help files.  It's decent startpoint.

*whistles*

Haven't seen some of those in a long long time, and they sure do bring back fond memories. It's a great shame you can't keep up the rendering Ed but I do understand your reasons. I get the feeling that - for you at least - getting back into rendering is like getting back on a bicycle though. So don't ever get rid of Spire - you never know when you may want to turn a hand to it :)

It sure brings it all back to it, looking at those though.
