I hope I have this right. Freespace 2 is now abandonware, correct? So therefore we are legally allowed to download/share it, etc. My problem is that the FTP site won't work for me. Is there any other way that I could get a copy of it?
Thanks in advance.
-
Heh might get banned for this but http://freespacezone.com
Note:You have to burn on a cd or use Daemon tools to mount it on a virtual drive. For info on how to use follow this http://google.com
-
I doubt you'll get banned for it. But yea, that has working ISOs.
-
And FreeSpace 2 is not abandonware.
-
Well so long as its for personal use...its okay right? As in no personal profit or even distribution.
-
The line on whether or not FS2 is abandonware is grey - it is and it isn't. For instance, it's not "officially" abandonware, but Interplay hasn't put up any resistance, and Volition's released the source code and given their support for the distrobution.
-
Thanks, my only problem now is that the last file (disc3) won't dl. :(
-
What error are you getting? The server might just be exhausted or overloaded with users.
Oh, and welcome to HLP ET-1087. :)
:welcome:
-
It just says, in the little status bar at the bottom:
"Stopped"
...lovely. :wtf:
Ah well. And thanks for the help.
-

You can't download more than two ISOs at a time from that site.
-

Yeah, but you can't install without it.
-
If you deselect installing the command briefing anis, then you can :p
-
How many times does it have to be said? Freespace 2 was legally allowed to be distributed to friends and family on a no profit, non-commercial basis from the moment it hit shelves. Read the Liscence Agreement during the install.

We know that Sandwich but putting the files up on a website for anyone to download is unlikely to qualify for that since there is no way to be certain that only people you know are downloading it.
Hmmm. I think I'm going to have to add a definative answer to the FAQ as I seem to be seeing a lot of questions about the legality of distributing FS2 recently.

I've never seen that, myself. This was all I could find, from the readme.

The readme is different from the one shown when actually installing the game.
Personally I reckon it was a protest introduced by [V] at the last minute when they saw how small Interplay's advertising budget was. :)
-
Interplay is dead. So whers the license? And if they sell it how can we find out who has it?
Any word on V? They doing well under THQ?
-
Interplay is not dead, they still own it, and they haven't sold it. And why don't you just look at all the games :V: has made to see how they're doing?
-
What ^ said. Although, it'd be harder to find any good games Volition has made recently.
-
Me again. I'm still confused about what happens after I get the .iso files. Some help please?
-
Pretty simple. Either you
1) Open up your CD burning software and choose the burn image option
2) Do a google search for Daemon-Tools, download it and set it up to provide you with a fake CD drive which will treat the image files as if they were real (Actually a lot easier than it sounds).
Personally I'd do the second to install/play the game and then back up using the first method.

 Run the setup, you'll see it.

Been a few years, and nobody's taken the shot yet:

Pretty neat how :V: is/was so nice about it. Usually game companies go bonkers about that sort of stuff.
-
Well, it might have gotten them a few more sales. I mean...I know that if I hear a good CD (don't trade games with friends much) and they offer to burn it, I'll usually take it. If it's a real good CD though, I'll usually buy a copy. They could have possibly been trying to get some more sales from that. Nothing to lose anyway. The people that are recieving the free copy probably would have never bought it anyway.
-
Hmm. With a name being "good wish", what did you expect? ;)
-
Well...I got it working.
:D
Thanks for all the help. Now just to set my old Wingman Extream Joystick up. That's gonna be fuuuun.
Ah well.
-
Okay, so now I've beaten the SP part of FS2....how about the MP?
When I try to register with parallax I get an error. Nothing I can do works around this. When I even try -hosting- a game using the MP in FS2 it crashes. Some help please? What do i need to post?
-
And another thing. Can anyony give me a link to the cutscenes? Because I don't seem to have them. They are on the cd, but they don't copy over...help.
-
The cutscenes won't transfer across from the CD automatically even on a full install. Retail was designed to be played with the CDs in the CD drive so the cutscenes would play off the CD when required.
As long as you aren't using FS2_Open the cutscenes can simply be copied off the CD to your freespace2 folder and they'll work just fine. It will still ask you for the CDs though most likely.
There's a cracked exe on my website's download section. Try the HotU crack pack for an exe that should play cutscenes but which doesn't require the CDs.
-
Well Interplay never update their main site so i assume'd their dead. Well AFAIK.
