Title: That last dang shivan
Post by: J.P. on June 23, 2005, 06:43:52 pm
I went back to play the original FS1 and I got to the fifth mission. The one where they first meet the shivans.

I tried my best and I still couldn't kill him. I know it is possible because i have done it even before I discovered the FS community.

So, now I am trying to modify the mission to where I have avengers instead of cruddy ML-16's. :D  I saved it but the changes don't show in the mission. Could someone help me with this?

Cheater.

Seriously, just go into the weapons.tbl file and jack up the ML-16's damage. That should do the job for you.

Don't even need to cheat at all.

Load up on dumbfire rockets.  You may not be able to lock on, but you can sure as hell pelt him with those along with your standard ML-16.

It also helps if your cannon-fodder wingpersons live to give you a hand.

Rockeyes aren't dumbfire, but the Furies are.

And that's how I killed him. I tailed him ans gave him a rear full of Fury.

Another option is to make your loadout ML-16 x2, Disruptor x2.  The shield dammage figures on the disruptor is pretty much the same but the overall dammage is 3x that of the ML-16, so that should give it better shield dammage.

nah, i just loaded up on ML-16's and Furies, and did what Raa did. :D

i say it's the best way. :)

Actually guys, you know what's bizarre? I was playing that same mission once(I was powering through with cheats on because I wanted to watch me some cutscenes) and I hit 'j,' I believe it was, and it targeted a Shivan. I was confused. I tried it again later with no cheats, and it did the same thing. But when I play the FS Port, no dice; it works the way it should.

The first time i played that mission i had a shivann targetted the whole time, so i was thinking "wtf??!"

Just move behind him and use furies until his shields go down, then finish him off with ML - 16s

EDIT: I think I remember once playing that mission and beating 5 of them.

Or you could be more like me, and simply chase one of the Scorpions around and kill it with harsh language and raising your middle finger in strategic, key spots. It happens to work for me, at least until I discovered how to use FS1 FRED.

Probably the 'J' key.  That's a bug in FS1 that was fixed in FS2.

You know he said rockets, right? ;)

And yep, that's how I did it too. On Insane - it's definitely do-able.

I load up on Disruptors to do it, knock out his engines, and leave him there. Then the next guy, and the next.

I had all of them sitting there disabled once, and I saved Faustus. But it just got to the node and stopped...

Still, I killed two Shaitans and four Scorpions because I could afford to reload and pummel them each to death with Furies. Then the next wave jumped in.

But that was the only 100% breakable :v: mission I ever found.

you know some are inveunerable, right?

Not the ones that attack the Faustus. Maybe the ones that attack the Taurus, but I don't remember anyone invunerable attacking the Faustus.

some of the shaitans are inveunerable IIRC

Exactly, since the Plato had to be destroyed for reasons only :v: knows.

I was able to take out a Shaitan and a Scorpion, and then another shaitan in that mission where you escort the galatea through the asteroid field. Got a promotion and a Distinguished Service Cross. :D

Thanks guys. I was able to do it without cheating, which surprised me since the last several times I played FS1 I couldn't do it. :p

Also surprising, I think I just used ML-16's the first time.

here's a good way: play FS2 (if you aren't already) with FSPort enabled, and select the Shivan Super Laser. :D

I like it in the original way: Chasing an agile fighter without sensor lock or any effective weapons is good for training, bt only when the hull of the fighter takes damage, the Ai starts 'aggressive' maneuvering this way.

you know what the weird thing was though? when all the shivans but that last one jumped out, you try to use MX-50's but they don't track the shivan, yet the AI's MX-50's track it. :wtf:

So do I; it's much more intense and weirding-out... I was simply trying to recreate the effect with FS Port.

AI can still lock I think because that would take a lot of programming to make a non-lockable AI thing.

Well I am way past that mission now. I am on the one where the Lucifer destroys the aquilae station and I finished it perfectly. But now it won't let me warp out. I can't end the mission. It always aborts the warp out.

Get about 1000 clicks away from every ship in the area. that might work.

that's actually another screw-up on :v:'s part. btw, better complete every (and i mean EVERY) objective, else it might give you a Failed Mission screen.

I can't gaurantee it'll work though. sometimes it lets you jump out, and sometimes it doesn't.

that mission is particularly buggy with the warp out's... There's no sexp saying to break the warp (i think :nervous: ) , except it does sometimes...

Shouldn't this thread be called 'That first dang Shivan'? ;)

I seem to recall that when I first played the FS1 campaign I think I did more damage by ramming the poor shivan than shooting it ;) I take Point Blank range to new levels ;)
