Just having fun with fraps and editing......
http://www.penguinbomb.com/omniscaper/WIPS/trench.wmv
Its tough doing mouse camera work. :( Sorry, dont have the Starwars soundtrack unfortunately.
Screenshots of this WIP is also in the Star Wars Mod forum : http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,33322.0.html
-
neat :)
-
Love the music.
That looks great, though the DS seems a bit...small.
-
Its 44km in diameter.... smller than the canon 120km. The approach scene was the game with 64x time compression. Its takes AWHILE to get to the behemoth in 1x.
-
Ah, Ok. Time Compression. That explains it :)
-
Wow, that's pretty amazing - but how did you get the mouse to pan and move like that in FS2? I didn't think you could do that.
-
I gave the Xwing strafing capabilities and turned off the HUD. Took me 2 hours to get the shots I was more or less content with. This game needs ingame cutscenes. Its pretty enough now to not need CG :).
WIth that 182,840 polygon Deathstar, the actual in game framerate was 120fps steady (God bless Bob's subobject lods feature). Fraps killed my fps to 30 as you can see in the video.
-
But CG is so much fun to watch...
-
where can i find this fraps? nukemod needs a promotional video :D
-
But when playing in combat, you are too busy trying to kill, that you dont really get the time to take in SCP's beauty. With in game cutscenes, you can get the awe factor much better.
-
Thats awesome Omni!:D
-
Danke!
Is the music a little over the top? I was digging through my music collection and couldn't find my SW soundtrack.

The SEXPs are all there. They're even neatly grouped in the change>>Cutscenes section :D
-
Cool.
Except my copy of Windows Media Player seems to be completely ****ed now, so i only see it what looks like 8-bit :(

I don't like it, but that's just me I suppose.
-
Is that music from The Matrix Reloaded?
Highlighted. :)
-
Yep. It's by Rob Dougan - Chateau is this particular track. He also did the one from the trailer (The one that us Brits know as the Law & Order theme tune).
-
44 km? pfft. 120 km or ban.
-
Nice video. The fs2 game engine never fails to amaze me.
-
Dude.... duuuuuuuuude...... duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude....
*faints*
-
And thus, my copy of X - Wing finally becomes obsolete.
Nice work.
-
Kool... highlighted!? Thanks.
More pimpage for the Star Wars Mod Project. We need more help people. If you guys wanna play this game first hand PLEEZE help speed up a release. If you are willing and able to help in the areas of modelling, model conversion, texturing, beta testing, and beer drinking... please do!
Click on the avatar under my name to see whats going on and ask Karma what needs to be done.
Its Star Wars for Pete's sake!!! The ONLY true trilogy!!! It deserves a place in the Freespace Engine.
-
:jaw:
holy crap, dude.
pros: Almost everything was right.
cons: needs fighters and turbolasers. :p
other than that: holy ****, that was awesome! :D
-
Very nice  Music was fine, I actually kind of liked it ;)
Only thing is that it seems to me like the various extrusions on the trench would be better done wth bumpmapping :nervous: I'd have to watch ANH again, but it seems to me like the Trench had a lot more little ridgies and they were (relatively) smaller, then the extra polygons could be put into turrets and stuff.
Of course that would actually require bumpmapping...
-
At the moment I'm using a single generic tile mape used on the Battlestar Galactica for detailing. I know it will look better if a map was specifically made for the trench.
For the mesh I'm using the Gamecube's Rogue Leader as a reference for the greebles.
-
don't you have a copy of the movie?
-
*thinks about helping the Starwars project :drevil:, also thinks about being lazy.

The game probably renders it a lot clearer.
-
Not to mention you can view it from different angles and speeds.
Words cannot describe how cool this is. My only criticism is that the walls of the big trench that the little trench is in don't look good at all. I've already emailed this thread to two friends, who are both equally amazed. Has this really been done before? Ever?

Well, I have no clue if this helps any, but here's a movie shot:

Indeed
-
Amazing stuff Omni, that surpasses the work of paid professionals, as does a lot of the work on here. All we need now is some way of multiplying collision damage so that if you hit the sides, you're screwed ;)
-
[DarthVaderVoice]Impressive.[/DarthVaderVoice]
Only one small gripe: When flying down the trench, I didn't get the impression of speed like in ANH. Except towards the end. It felt like the x-wing was cruising down there, rather than charging along at break-neck speed.
Apart from that, very good;)
-
omni, you certainly have a gift for recreating models from movies or tv or whatever. its certainly something i couldnt do. all my attempts to do unoriginal designs end in failure. but im curious, have you done any original models?

Agreed.

Thanks peeps for all the feedback. I'm slowly getting the creative impulse back. I'm still recovering from my Art skool brain washing sessions, which I'm barely resisting dropping out of. Doing this kinda stuff helps keep me grounded in the PRACTICAL world. Though not currently luccrative, I consider all the models I've made for FSO to be portfolio material to build up.
I have so many FSO projects I'm juggling now. Its tough managing my workload and my attention span. The BSG project is still my priority, but I'll be helping other projects where ever I can.
In reguard to original designs, I prefer not to do original designs unless I have a story and campaign for them to be a part of. If a project needs original designs, and I happen to have the time, I can provide. I'd rather not spend the time and effort on a model that will just collect dust on my PC, that will never be used by the community. I prefer to exercise my 3dsmax skills on models that can be used right away.
In reguard to originally desinged models, I've done MANY, all of which are in my sketch books where only few have translated into 3d. (Art History classes can get boring but thats where my creative juices for sci-fi madness realyl kick in). :)
-
PLEASE make a full size version too though? 44 is not really enough, the curving of the end of the tunnel is getting to me --- it will look a lot cooler if you also make a full-size version
T_T
-
Oh! Needs Y-wings, too.
Plus a bigger Death Star; in the movie the curve of the DS was barely noticeable; yours is blatant.
-
I'd like to take this time to point out that in the movie, they were using a flat model of the Death Star surface to film on.
-
...Oh. *insert blushing smiley here because I'm using the quick response box and is too lazy to look up the code for it*
-
id like to se a half constructed rotj death star, that would be freaky and make a kich arse mission :D
-
In all reality, you probably would see substantial curve on a station that's only 160 km in diameter.
-
Well, it is noticeable in the movie. Not much, but you do see the curve.
-
Sweet! Where can I get the X-wing model?
-
In case u folks haven't been checking the Starwars project forum, heres my latest progress video on a re greebled trench.
http://www.penguinbomb.com/omniscaper/WIPS/DSv2.wmv
-
Actually, since in the movie they used an actual straight trench for filming if I'm not mistaken --- the trench in the movie is barely curved at ALL.
the trench being in a different location is one thing, messing with the size of the death star is unforgivable :D
-
The DS in the video is at its FULL canon 120km diameter.
-
*compares original video to new one*
I'll be damned...
-
Nice work :D
I don't mind the trench being slightly curved if that's what it would look like on a 120km death star as in the 2nd vid, might make it more realistic...
To everyone above- why wouldn't they use a flat model, its not as if they could build a real 120km diameter death star model!
-
no, but they could curve it a bit.
-
Omni I think you could double the density of the "stuff" on the walls of the trench, and then use a texture map with very pronounced details on it to fill in the rest. basically, the trench wall cannot have any empty spaces in it.
-
Textures will make the difference in this case. At the moment I'm just using a generic tile. My focus at the moment is the mesh. I'm feeling out Bob's sobobject LOD feature to see what kind of models are possible.
If someone would like to offer a better tile map to use, I'll plug it into the model. It would save me some time and will make future video clips look sweet.

i liked the new video, damn its lookin sweet.
-
Two questions...
1.) How did you get FRAPS to work for you that good? Damn last time I tried the demo it worked for crap even on lowest resolution/size...
2.) How do you get rid of the Hud for cutscene fredding/video capturing or just cool screenies?
Looking great!!!!!!!
Makes me want to bust out some old stuff.

there is absolutely no green on that. must be your monitor.

A bit of fiddling with photoshop reveals that there is in fact no green. The parts that appear that way are in fact slightly yellow, which still looks a bit odd. Correction:

Looks pretty good to me :p ...
-
You know I suspect the same sort of light-bending properties would apply to the Death Star that apply to the moon.
Of course, if the Death Star was close enough to be a similiar size to the moon, the solar system would be completely ****ed anyway (at least as it regards to earth)
-
the deathstar was mostly battleship grey..
why?.. 'cuz that's what they used to make the original movie.. battleship bits. :p
-

There's *color* in it. Color and Imperial ships don't mix. :p
Anyway, I'm hoping that the main body of the Deathstar will have similar greebling. It looks like the LOD system can handle it.
-
I'm sure it will handle it, but its the tedious set up process and unstable conversion process that will make life difficult for me. There is still a nasty pop up that is very noticable when the objects are in render range. Perhaps the SCP geniouses can find a way to fade those in. :)

i think it will tile with too many hard lines and make a nasty tile. perhaps create a border arondit that blends in the edges well. you could mirror it horizontally then vertically, but that would look redundant. best tiles are ones where you cant find the edges.
-
NICE greebs!!! With in game greebled mesh, the tile will not be so pronounced.
-
i put color on it that matched the color in this screeny.

I've checked the tiling already. No hard lines. The interlude between the maps is hard to find, even in high zoom levels. ;)
I think it will work fine, but I can always make it "more tileable". ^^
-
with all the paneling in the texture they should blend in well. ive just stopped using tiles all together and stick with very high res single maps. but that wouldnt work with something this big.

Do you have a link to the music?
(If you want SW music, I have a Duel of the Fates mp3)

The Duel of Fates is not a music that could be used for space combat.
-
I have the battle of yavin music somwhere around here, if i can find it...

Its on the episode 1 soundtrack... Its the one with the chanting like ness, only with hight voices... used mostly for the battle between obi-wan, qui gon, and maul...
-
^
I DO know that, that's why it's not a good track for space battles.

gimme.
I've got that on CD, but it sounds deeper and off-key when compared to the original version.
