Born in Palermo (Italy), 11 March 1975, Manuel "Vanethian" Marino
learned musical basic concepts by himself, and, only in a second
time, he studied solfeggio, finger picking technique and jazz
lessons with a teacher. Even if he loved playing guitar, every
time he tried to put all his time on it, he changed his mind.
His computer passion bring him to prefer midi sequencing musical
composition to guitar live! exhibitions, so at the end he left
his guitar studies and decided to merge himself with the world
of computer music.

Manuel "Vanethian" Marino is a one man band. He plays guitars,
synthesizers and keyboards. He composes his music, and he is a
sound processing expert. Practically, he does everything!
With his acoustic and digital instruments he composed several
songs which go through different musical styles, from classical
to techno, creating an astounding mix of styles (which is the
typical trait of his music).

Yep. If I provide you an old crappy midi from an old game (descent), is it possible that you make a good quality music from it, or you just provide the ones on your site and no new one?
Title: Hello! Interested in free music to use in your shareware games?

I can provide you with professional studio quality wave/mp3 files.

But... do we have license to use descent midis?
Title: Hello! Interested in free music to use in your shareware games?
Post by: Nico on June 10, 2001, 04:44:00 am
Well, the source code for the 2 first episodes have been released... anyway, if you just use it make a new one, I think it's legal, no? many musicians use this trick, they call it sampling if I'm right... Anyway I suppose if you just listen to the midi and make your own version, it's legal, no? I get the macintoch version of Descent1 coz they are better quality waves, but I must say that I've been disapointed... have someone ever listened to the music tracks of the descent2 CD? Believe me that worth it  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Ok.. well.. i think if you give me the midis (my email is [email protected]) i could make some little modifies in the melodies, so we don't have to worry about licences and so on...

Uhmmm.. depends...

Eiffel65 usually compose their music in few days and then they spend ONE MONTH in mixing and final production...  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

...But i spend more time in composing and less in mixing... depends on the genre, on the inspiration, on the arrangment complexity and so on...

..give me the .midi files and i'll begin working on them... with the midi files my work is easier cause i don't have to "create from scratch"...

...let's see what i can do  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

In the meantime, listen to my actual production and see if there's something you like.

Yeap, I like many of them, but they are, eheh, too peacefull   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
Doesn't fit too much with space combat, but I'm now sure you can do cool things with the midis   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Is it possible to have some kind of "heavy metal" feeling? more like in the spirit of Descent1 and 2, the 3 was more techno, and I prefer electric guitars   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

-edit: oh, btw, I sent you the file, 22kb, not too big lol

Btw, here taht's not shareware games, but modifications from existing games  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif). But you know, by doing mods, some people finally poped up games like Gunman and (soon) Team Fortress  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Ok... i've done the job... you can find what i've done at:
 http://space.tin.it/lettura/dqkim/Descent.mp3 ("http://space.tin.it/lettura/dqkim/Descent.mp3")

You can decompress the file in .wav format easily... just use one of the many decoders.

Consider that the work is not PERFECT! Usually before i post a song i make about 10 different arrangements and i listen to them 100 times, making changes to mix and effects. Then i choose the best.

In this case, i've been very fast and the piece was really short, only 1 minute. Also, the piece structure is really easy, only a two chords structure with a modulation in the second part of the song.

I perform jazz pieces using piano and guitar, so this Descent piece seemed very easy to understand and arrange, for me.

19 and 25 June i've got GIGs... so probably i'll have more time to dedicate to your project after these events.

Consider this mp3 file just an example of what i can do. I'm not only one of the best jazz pianist around, but i'm also the owner of a great recording studio worth 50000 dollars!

With me you can have HIGH QUALITY and PROFESSIONAL productions... all FREE!!! just advertise my website and we've got a deal!

In the future we can discuss better about HOW to advertise http://www.vanethian.com ("http://www.vanethian.com")  but i can say since now that i want:

- My url posted on your webpage

- In the game manual

- In the game credits

- In that closing screen that everyone
sees each time they exit the game.

If you agree... we've got a deal!

hem, to the other peoples... Is there that kind of screen in FS2? I don't think so  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)
About the game manual, it will be a very little doc file I guess... I'm not a professional, just a moder  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
For the site, np, i'll tell Thunder to add your name on the bottom of the main page (if I take the music of course)
in the game credits np , there's that in fs2, check this link to see what I mean:

Well... consider that i could have done it much much better... but this means i gotta spend days and hours studying the structure and trying to make the best arrangement possible...

...i worked only on the midi... while i could just use the midi as inspiration and then build the piece from scratch. This would bring to a far better soundscape...

This evening (italian time) i've got time... so i can provide you with more examples of what i can do with my recording studio... consider these works as examples.... and not as the FINAL WORK.

I'll provide you with a simple space soundscape... wait for my next message.

I'm french, so I think we have the same time   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Well, you know, it's already great, I was ready to use those terrible midis not that far ago, then I bought tha mac CD, but there lacks a lot of musics, and they changed some others (and they didn't sound right), plus the legal issue. So this one is FAR better than what I could have expected   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif). The only annoying thing are those 30 missings seconds, but otherwise it's great   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif).

Ok... here's another example. This time i'm creating some "alien feeling" beat. It could be used as "combat music"...

I've used some chord progression typical of hardcore music...

It's ONLY AN EXAMPLE... the piece is not complete and the mix is not perfect...

url is http://space.tin.it/lettura/dqkim/aliens.mp3 ("http://space.tin.it/lettura/dqkim/aliens.mp3")

YOU SHOULD ALSO LISTEN TO my piece "Time Travellers", on mp3.com

URL is
 http://artists.mp3s.com/artist_song/1160/1160618.html ("http://artists.mp3s.com/artist_song/1160/1160618.html")

TIME TRAVELLERS is an awesome piece that could easily fit the "cruise" music background. It's an upbeat electronic piece fantastic to listen to as you fly without enemies around...

Yeah, they are cool, and I recomand them to other peolples  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) For my part I prefer to stick with Descent musics because I'm doing a campaign involving many Descent things, like sounds, 3d models and so on, that's why I want to have the descent musics converted  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Plus I'm not that fond of electronical music, but when they're well done like yours, I don't mind  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Ok... well...

I can make modern adaptations of Descent midis. In this case, you can't tell everyone MUSIC BY MANUEL MARINO, because it's not true.

So you should say:

..if the midis have got simple structures, probably i can orchestrate them in few days... let's see..

Ah... i'm making available a new mix of CYBER LOVE.. so, if you want, check it tomorrow (i don't think mp3.com will validate it today)...

Argh!  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) midi's got something wrong... the timing is wrong.. probably they used some old sequencer with a different timing standard... i'm trying to find the right time but it's difficult... also the overall arrangement is wrong...

I'm sure the piece has been composed for SB and FM synthesis... are you sure you don't have Descent modern midis? these ones you gave me are really strange...

..wrong timing, wrong rhythm, wrong chord progressions... probably they used midi format 0... but i work ONLY with midi format 1.

Strange because the first midi you gave me (the THEME) was right!

ARE YOU SURE YOU DON'T WANT NEW MUSIC?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Hey, that's my kinda guitar.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

I play an Ibanez GRX20 myself. I use a washburn amp and a Danelectro Overdrive Pedal along with Radio shack adapters and cords. I've yet to get a new pedal soon because it's been acting like a ghost and has been turning on overdrive when I don't need it, and sometimes goes off overdrive when I DO need it.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) This only happens sometimes though.

I have a campaign "in the works" (been in the works for a very long time too). I'd probably check out a few of your tracks for use. I'll be sure to credit you in the credits.tbl for the game.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Well, I have a Warlock (BC Rich), but I suck at playing guitar...
Anyway, Yep, I'm sure I need only descent musics lol, but if I can get to finish this campaign one day (shouldn't be that hard in fact, I've done almost all the mods) I have a new project, even more easy to do (for the models part at least) that WILL require brand new musics (coz I'm sure I can't use the original ones at all).
About the midi pb, that strange... I listen to them in winamp, and I think I got "quite a good ear", and I never noticed anything wrong (well on one midi maybe, but I don't think it's one of those I sent you).
If you can't work on these ones, though, I can send you the whome music pack, and you could pick up the ones you can work on?

Hello friends!!! THANKS FOR THE KIND MESSAGES!!!  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

I'm very happy you like Stairway to the Stars!!  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Well.. it's now available online (it's a great example of my talent as classical music composer, which is really important for soundtracks in any genre!) the Theme i've made for DARK AGES II: Engel!

URL is

  http://artists.mp3s.com/artist_song/1644/1644525.html ("http://artists.mp3s.com/artist_song/1644/1644525.html")

It's an epic orchestral piece, highly dramatic, and VERY COMPLEX!
It's just an example of what i can do as classical music composer!  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

This song will really AMAZE you, even if you are a scifi game developer and not a fantasy/medieval setting one!!!!!  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Yes!.. the one in which you say:

"Dude thats awesome!!!
 You could become professional...
 I love that intro!"

^__^ thanks!

Well... i'm sure i'll be able to compose the dark intro in few days.

Just a question... how much "synth sounds" do you want me to use?

Theme should be more "classical" or more "electronic"?

and... more on the mood/music or more on the rhythm?

in my humble opinion but final say is of cource dragons cause i am only a lowly memeber of the campaign but for hideden terror i think dark tense classical - electronic cant be creepy and evil at least i dont think so

ohhh that dark ages is great - its creepy and full of suspence and tension great stuff - are you more into classical musics than any other forms?
Title: Hello! Interested in free music to use in your shareware games?

I'd have to say a dark classical...

a tiny bit more on the mood then the rhythm.

Next work to do is a combat theme for Hidden Terror...

...do you want a classical combat theme or a classical/techno one? or a soundscape with many effects and occasional music?

Could it start off classical and then progress into a techno type?

Like it would progress...

Starts off like a soundscape with just a few effects and moving into classical and then into techno...

I realize this might be hard but I would like to see you try it.

I'd mention it to 'Shears, but he's really busy with work.

1) I didn't talk of my models or anything like that
2) dead topic? It has been started by vanethan, it's his only topic in the whole HLP forum, and the only place he talks about his stuff, and he comes back regularly to give updates about his work.
3) Who are you to talk to me like that,
4) if that doesn't please you, don't come on this thread. I never see you acting like that for snipes or dragon claw. what's wrong with you?

right. only this thread.

Snipes and Dragonclaw contribute, by posting, or actually having an INTREST in the games covered here.

This thread is being bumped over and over. I don't want it to become the VBB here.

if it's ok, then I'll just pimp my own site and bump it every day.
