Post by: Knight Templar on July 04, 2005, 07:29:57 pm
..pick one Civil Liberty or Right (I.E. the ammendments, supreme court rulings, etc.) from the U.S. Constitution to deem essential to Democracy and disregard all the others, which would it be and why?

How about a list for us non Americans?

I'm assuming the first is freedom of speech? I would take either speech or the freedom or overthrow the government should it become tyranical. Of course, you can do that anyway, but I think that even today it is not seen as legitimate, which is important. Of course, the Second Amendment (guns) would be a crucial part of that package.

I'd say freedom of speech; everything about human rights, democracy. etc is built upon the right to freely express your beliefs and opinions.

Is the spirit of Magna Carta an option?

I'd also accept the Declaration of Arbroath (sp?)

The right to see boobs.

(Just to avoid making a mockery of this thread, I'll go with freedom of expression for the aforementioned reasons.)

The second.  Otherwise you have no way to protect the rest of your rights.

On a side note, **** the Fifth Admendment, actually **** the supreme court. The Admendment is supposed to protect property owners.

Yeah.  But it's not like end running that one is anything new.  The whole affair with drug seizures where it was deemed that property didn't have amendment rights (thus letting the cops seize property of suspected drug dealers and pretty much keep it guilty or not) went by without a peep from the general public.

As for the question, I think I'll take number 10 for 100 alex.

If all but one of the constitutional rights goes, then democracy no longer exists. Therefore there is little point in picking one. :p

1.  I like being able to say what I want

2.  I wanna be able to stop my gov. if it takes other rights away

3.  I like owning my own property it gives prupose to the other two above (and it keeps the hobos away :nervous: )

Oh yeah, I don't know why that's so clever, there already is a 21st amendment.

Anyway, I think I'd have to go with Article 14, section 1. If I were to avoid the first, that is.

KT: There's an error in de link, as Bob said, remove the underscore after twenty-. Also, the 21th removes the 18th, the Prohibition.

But don't look at me, I chose the second. Lock and load, baby.
