Title: Total Newb to Freespace
Post by: DiabloTerrorGF on July 05, 2005, 08:58:50 am
1. I just found Freespace 2 at a store and got it installed and a friend told me to ask here for everything else I need...

2. I updated FS2 with the newest patch(I think?) and then tried to play... but my mouse doesn't work either(only for menus does it work)... and I'm not a fan of the numberpad...

:welcome:

hit F2 to go into the options screen.  about 3/5 of the way down on the left side there is a box that will let you use the mouse to fly.  its off by default.

Yes, joystick is good. Quick tip: if your computer=nice, get FS_Open from www.scp.indiegames.us (correct URL, right?).

acctually, no, dont get scp. cuz u will not have any cutscenes which are important for understanding the story. first finish the game, then, download scp.

[edit] (Fear posted while I was typing) Yeah, DEFINITELY do that. Cutscenes = necessary. Besides, then you can compare FS2 Retail to FSO. [/edit]

No... No, I've tried my Saitek Cyborg Evo (Niiiiiiice stick...) on FS2... It was all messed up. It worked, but I didn't like the way it handled. I'll probably try again someday.

Hey, I own my own copy of FS2. I'm proud of it. I found FS1/ST (For 9$ :D ) at a store, loved it, found out there was a sequel, and bought that somewhere.

[/nostalgia]

Only get it if you have a reasonably good computer...otherwise it will freeze up a lot.

Its not that i mind buying Fs2 or so, but i see no reason for it nowadays, do u really want to support Interplay?

Oh and unfortuanly for me i dont have the retail copy of fs2, i would have buyed it if it could be found in israel, damn interplay.

:wtf: You are aware that you can download AVI versions of the cutscenes for use in FS2_Open right?

As long as you're using anything other than the official 3.6.5 build they'll work fine.

Links are in the SCP section of my FAQ.

Whats all this that SCP has no cutscenes? It most certianly does if you bother to download them.

No,i wasnt, we learn things every day. thnx for the enlightening.

And i think we shouldnt make things so complicate, all he wants is to play, as he sayed he dont understand anything about fs. just let him play, if he will like fs2 he will come and ask questions(like when fs3 will be released?;) ), in result he will play scp. thats what acctually happend to me, i played fs2 , then i went to look answers and found this community.

My attitude has always been that people should play a few missions with FS2 just to to see that it works and what it's like and then install FS2_Open and see how much better it can be :)

I think the SCP should be presented along the lines of "You don't need this to play FS2 but you might want it" :D

I found it at my local EBG for $5. My friend has it and we wanted to do multi, and I already installed FSO >_> I did try training before FSO... I didn't know much of a difference with vehicle detail(except maybe brighter) but the effects are much better.

Only problem I have with FSO is that when I first fire, my FPS drops to 10 for about 3 seconds but after that it stays at a constant 160.

Consider yourself really feaking lucky. Many have had to pay over $50 if they wanted a copy of the game without downloading it.

Kara...,
I have version 3.6.5 and the cutscenes work for me.  To confirm, the file I run is fs2_open_T-20050103.exe, and when I am in the game menu it says 3.6.5 (fs2_open)...

I did make my own though.  They may be a tiny bit higher quality than yours - not sure.  They are encoded with DivX WMA Audio V2 and DivX MPEG-4 Fast-Motion.  They are a bit larger than yours.  I also fixed the chirp at the beginning of the intro - well not really fixed, but edited it out since it is right at the beginning.

A couple of folks in our group are interested in MP, so I got the stuff recommended in the thread at Game Warden.  The new PXO config file, 20050103 build, and the tables.  I also did the cutscenes so we could train and play the stock campaign, and then bundled it all into one zip for for our folks ease of use/install.

Now a question or two for the general populace here, since we are pretty much newbies too...

Should we use version 3.6.6 or should we just wait for version 3.6.7, or stick with 3.6.5?

Should we consider the media vp's?  or do they mess up multiplayer?  I understand it does so only because of lag on the computers???  Are they still available for 3.6.5?

Can we play the stock campaign coop?  Any others?

Thx all!

When I say 3.6.5 I mean the offiical release. Taylors 3rd January is considered by most to be a bug fixed version of 3.6.5 and is basically the build I'd reccomend everyone gets instead of 3.6.5.

Problem with WMA is that as far as I know it leaves the linux users out in the cold. IIRC I used mp3 on the grounds that every can use that.

Did you manage to get rid of the error at the end too? Personally I'm not too fussed about that one. It sounds like Shivan communications or something so it just makes the intro spookier :D

I'd stick to Taylor's build for the time being. It's very stable. The only reason to change is when it begins to be become incompatible with the new stuff the SCP are constantly adding to the VP files.

The 3.6.6 VPs are better organised than the 3.6.5 ones. I'd stay away from the latter or you'll probably find yourself having to deal with missing files all the time.

A co-op version of the main campaign is included in the 3.6.6 mv_core.vp

Thx kara...you are helpful as always.

I see - i did not know there was a difference in the 3.6.5 versions.  The end of the intro just blacked out for me on conversion, so i also cut it off the end.  i wonder if i can capture it in the original, and then paste it in.  got it on the encoding - this stuff is new to me.  maybe i can take another crack and find one that is across the board compatible (being a heavy linux user myself...at least for work purposes).

Can we use the 3.6.6 media vp's with Taylor's 3.6.5 build?

Nice in the coop in the media vp's...

You kind of HAVE to use the 3.6.6 vp's with the 3.6.5 (and related) builds since there actually is no 3.6.6 build. So use the 3.6.6 ones.

I've had that problem with the cutscenes for a long time, and I finally managed to kill it by uninstalling all things Divx and reinstalling only the codec. Apparently having the player installed was creating some sort of conflict.

did you try the trick fenrir mentioned?  do you have extraneous players installed?  or the divx player?

Yeah, that one. Just uninstal Divx and reinstall only the codec. I did that by googling it and getting the bundlepack thing, but only choosing to install the mpg4decoder, or whatever it's called.

I'll give it a shot but I hate to uninstall DivX.
