Title: Convoy problem
Post by: DarthWang on July 06, 2005, 12:57:00 am
Okay, I have a mission with a convoy, a lot of freighters with cargo containers, a medical cruiser, a destroyer, a fenris, and some transports. However, one of the freighter wings, which is made up of Triton freighters (docked with TC - TRI cargo containers) is doing something weird. All the ships have orders to move to a distant waypoint (and warp out once they get close enough to the jump node), but two of the three Triton freighters always start by swinging and gyrating around instead of just going straight. I've tried repositioning them a hundred times, but nothing helps.

Not in a wing, are they?

Wings and freighters don't always mix well. You may be better off just calling them 'Omega 1' etc. and sending them to three individual waypoints without them actually being formed into Omega wing and sent to one.

Thanks, I'll try that.

Yep. Blaise has hit the nail right on the head. There's a reason why FRED won't let you build wings out of freighters :)

It seems to be working, but out of curiosity, why won't freighter wings work?

I assume that the the way wings behave is set up somewhere in the AI code seperate from the AI behaviour for freighters.

As a result the freighters are doing things that would look fine for fighters and bombers (for instance patrolling around the final waypoint (rather than simply staying still) etc.

Wings make the ships fall into a position around the wing leader, like when you press C-3-7 (or C-2-1-7 for just Alpha). Unless they are manually placed in the exact location they need to be (which i've never seen done), the freighters (2 and 3) will attempt to move to their position with freighter 1. If freighter 1 is already moving away from the others at full speed, then you've got a problem where they'll keep on adjusting their course very slightly...
