I'm having a having a problem installing Freespace 2. When I put in the CD, it revs up then stops. THere isn't any autorun popping up plus the setup file on the disc won't run either. It'll just rev and stop. Can anyone help me? I"m running on Windows XP media center edition w/ a Pentium 4 and Radeon X300. Please help.
both of my cd drives recognize the disk and the label shows up instead of being "no disk in drive". I can see the files but I can't open the Setup.exe or the autorun. I've tried compatibility, even though I don't completely understand how it works.
I've tried on the Admin account and that doesn't work either. It works another computer w/ WinXP but it's a P.O.S. so I'm not installing it

That happened to us in the computer lab earlier this year. It turned out to be a bad CD drive*. See if any other CDs work in it.
*I don't think they've gotten around to replacing it yet, either. ;)
-
It's only happened to one other game, Caesars 3. One drive is a DVD-Rom and the other is a DVD RW
-
The EXACT same thing happens to me, which is why i'm left with an absolutely deformed Freespace2 Folder, as i'm too scared that, should i uninstall to clear out all the junk, i won't be able to install again. I've managed to get it working in the past when it's done this...but i honestly can't remember how i did it...hmmm...just going out on a whim here, but do you happen to have Decent: Freespace installed on your computer at the moment...?
-
I don't own Descent :Freespace so I can't really have it on un less it was pre-installed when I bought the comp, which I know it isn't.

Rename your old FS2 folder. Make a new one. Copy across the following VP files
# root_fs2.vp
# sparky_fs2.vp
# sparky_hi_fs2.vp
# stu_fs2.vp
# tango1_fs2.vp
# tango2_fs2.vp
# tango3_fs2.vp
# smarty_fs2.vp
# warble_fs2.vp
Then copy these files across.
Fred2.exe
FS2.exe
Freespace2.exe
FS2uninst.dll
Patchw32.dll
UpdateLauncher.exe (I doubt you need this but you might as well have it. )
Then make a new folder called Data. Copy across the contents of Data\Players and the following files from \Data
multi.cfg
multi.log
And you're done.
Best thing about doing it this way is that if it screws something up you can always just copy them all back :)
-
Hmm, im suffering from the same problem as you guys :(
My drives will read the CD though, but autoplay wont run. I managed to get freespace 2 installed by using the ISO's from freespacezone.com, which is down now at the moment. If you own the CD's, just make ISO's using Alcohol 120%, and mount them with it or with Daemon Tools. Both work fine. After you have mounted them you can install freespace without problems.
BTW, does anyone know what to do about the CD problems? It's very annoying, I got the problem with almost every cd?
-
:welcome:
Hey Gapie. Unfortunately it really sounds to me like you're experiencing a serious hardware problem... internal CD drives should be pretty cheap these days though, would you mind trying your hand at installing one? :)
-
Hehe, I have been beamed on to HLPBB already by Karajorma  But I've got 2 drives on my system, a CD/DVD-rom drive and a CD/DVD writer. Both work fine, I can burn stuff from CD to CD, I can play music cds with both of 'em, etc etc. Autoplay wont work however, and Windows explorer doesnt recognize when I switch the CD. So its totally Windows related. Windows = I will probably try to reinstall
XP at some time, but heck, I dont need to use the CD's that often.
-
Setekh as one of the creators of the board makes it a point to personally beam everyone again :D
-
Hmm, has Setekh ever been beamed back? If not, it's my pleasure to return this favor : :welcome:
-
Is anyone going to help me? I tried freespacezone.com and I can't DL the Iso's.
-
Yeah. The links on freespacezone are down at the moment unfortunately.
Have you tried making an ISO? Have you tried copying the files to your hard drive manually and installing from there?
-
never made an Iso before. I've tried copying the full 1st disc to my comp and the setup.exe ot autorun doesn't even open.
-
A quick question also, totally newbish too, what is the whole freespace 2 open and SCP thing? I never knew any of it existed until I started looking for help installing this.
-
Cut and paste from my FAQ.
What is FS2_Open? What is the SCP?
From the time it became apparent that there would be no FS3 the most repeated complaint the community had was that Volition wouldn't release the source code so that the community could work on it themselves
Quite a while after the release of FS2 [V] finally did the decent thing and released the code. It was immediately leapt upon by almost every person who could program (and some who couldn't and learnt in order to take advantage of it). An organisation was set up called The Source Code Project (SCP) who took the code with the intention of making Freespace 2 better. The product of their work was called FS2_Open.
FS2_Open is not FS3. Instead it is a replacement for the Freespace 2 engine, a sort of super mod for FreeSpace 2 which improves it no end. The idea is that by running FS2_Open you can play the Freespace 2 main campaign and all the Freespace 2 mods with better graphics. In addition to this improvements have been made to several of the games basics to add new kinds of weapons and missions that couldn't be done before. These improvements won't show up in the main campaign but will show up in special "Made for SCP" mods and campaigns.
The differences between FS2 retail and FS2_Open are breathtaking. It is almost like playing a new game. The project is not finished however and it continues to astound the community with every release.
More information on FS2_Open and the SCP can be found in various places in this FAQ. Since the SCP influences almost all things Freespace related information about it can not be lumped together in one place.
If you wish to look into the SCP the best places to start are their website and the SCP forum on HLP. You will of course need a working copy of FreeSpace 2 in order to get the SCP to work
-
Meh, ISO making is simple. Download Alcohol 120%here (http://http://www.download.com/Alcohol-120-/3000-2646_4-10414799.html?tag=lst-0-8)
, install it, use the ISO making wizard (I didnt have to reboot PC for that) and make the ISO's. All 3 cds though, will require a lot of space (2 gig). Then mount them using alcohol or daemon tools, and use the virtual CD's to install freespace 2. If this is unclear just PM me and ill mail some screenshots or something :)
-
Hehe, I was thinking about replying to the question about SCP too. Glad I didnt. Fast poster :D
-
Makes sense.
1. What would an Iso do?
2. where can I get freespace2 open if I ever get my game working?
EDIT:nevermind on the ISo
-
1. :Basically, an ISO is a Copy of the CD to your hard disk, but it doesnt copy the files but the bits on the surface of the CD. So you have the whole CD on your harddisk, all the bits, but you cant use it that way. So you use a virtual drive program, aka Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools, to mount the ISO's. Your computer will then see the ISO's as a CD in a drive, and then use the virtual CD's to install freespace.
2. Dunno. Ask karajorma ;)
Edit: didnt see your edit :(
-
I already got Daemon tools
-
Go make the ISO's then :)
-
I thought it was just a drive emulator
-
Thats what I said?
-
Yeah
-
THanks Gapie, no I want to figure out why the discs won't run normally
-
Don't ask me, I have got the same problem and dont know how to fix it :)
-
Ok after I install it using the Iso's, do I need them anymore and can I use the Cds?
-
You should be able to. But I'd recommend using FS2_open or use the no cd crack. You only need the cd's for the cutscenes anyway.
-
Won't install. some unistaller wizard error shows up and the intaller quits
-
Post the error and it may help us :)
FS2 Open is basically a replacement for the FS2.exe file and an addition to the .vp files so it goes in your \freespace2\ folder.
-
not sure if this is what you are looking for.
error 1:unInstaller setup failed to intialize. You may not be able to uninstall this product
error 2: INstallsheild Engine has encountered a problem & needs to close. WE are sorry...blah blah blah
For FS2_open, is it the actual game or is it like a mod?
-
FS2_open is basically a better version of the retail FS2. It supports better graphisc etc etc. Just makes the game look nicer :)
About those errors: try to uninstall it via the Control Panel --> software subscreen. Then try to install it again.
-
how do I get rid of the virtual drives? I have like 6 on MY Computer.
Edit: nevermind
The I don't get through the first disk when the error shows up.
software subscreen?
-
Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs.
If you're using DaemonTools you right click on the systray icon choose Virtual CD/DVD_ROM and then set number of devices.

Daemon tools: Right click on tray icon, Virtual CD/DVD ROM -> Set number of devices... ->
Daemon tools supports only 4 drives though, so you probably have some other virtual drive program installed.
software subscreen: Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs
-
Won't let me uninstall
error: The log file 'C:\Games\FreeSpace2\Unist.isu' is not valid or the data has been corrupted. Uninstallation will not continue.
-
Meh, I forgot: I got the dutch version :nervous: its called software there. In the English add/remove programs indeed. If that doesnt work , well regedit all the FS2 keys out of the registry and delete the FS2 folder :)

ummmm......what?
-
Hmm if you dont know what that means I wouldnt do it if I were you.
Could kinda screw up your windows
:sigh:
Edit: Looks down: yup. ;)
-
Basically, Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Then on the left, click on HKey_Current_User (you don`t need to delete things from hkey_classes_root, and that part is quite huge anyway)
Then Edit-Find, Type in Freespace2 and delete everything that`s found
Pray that your machine works after that :) Just kidding

:sigh:
Nah, that`s just M$ bulls*** like damaging your hard drive if you power off before shutting down. I have a 1996 Pentium laptop with a 2 gig HDD and it has not one damaged bit on it. If you delete everything that`s Freespace2, you won`t screw up windows. Just don`t delete anything else. BTW, download Regedit Plus before you do this http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,93433,00.asp
just in case, it can undo and everything
-
Fixed reg, now what?
-
Hmm, you do have a point. Still, its not for noobs :)
@ kie-san
Try to install again.
-

There shouldn`t be a Freespace2 in Add or Remove programs. If there is, you did stg wrong and didn`t delete the uninstall information. If there isn`t, try to install
-

He`s got to learn it someday, and it isn`t that difficult anyway, you just have to kow what`s where and what should be left as it is
-
tried installing again (the FS2 was out of the add/remove) error showed up again, INstallsheild Engine has encountered a problem & needs to close. WE are sorry...blah blah blah, and closed setup
Edit: Guys....chill out
-
We're chilling :) We're not flaming each other. But Meh.. try removing the C:\Games\Freespace2 folder, check for FS2 keys in the register again and restart windows. Perhaps that ll work.
-
Did the regedit and deleted the folder....Again. I guess restarting will work.
-
That didn't work
-
I'm running out of options  Do a Register wide search for FS2 , and if it that doesnt work I dont know what to do :shaking:
-
it's not the reg, it quits during installing. IT did it the first time I tried installing
-
Well obviously something went wrong. Do a system wide search for files that were modified @ the first time of your install. Check which ones have something to do with FS2, and delete those. Then try again.
-
Crap...I don't know when I first installled
-
what kinds of files should I delete if I find them?
-
hmm anything you are sure of is freespace 2 related. and do NOT delete files that are in the C:/Windows folder, except if you are 100% sure the installer placed it there, ie. FS2uninstall.dat or something.
-
well that didn't work anyway. Is there anyone you know that could help since you said you're pretty much out of ideas?
-
I'm updating INstallshield because that's what is always popping up
-
I dont know at all. Perhaps you have a system restore point you could go back to before installing FS2, but thats a last resort option. You'd lose a lot of other stuff then i guess :(
-
That probably won't do it. Is there a different way of installing it instead of an Iso?
Note: The Install breezes through and gets to around 60% in about a minute then the Installshield engine error shows up, asking to send an error report to Microsoft, then the setup closes after the error window closes. Also it nevers asks to change disks or anything
-
Will anyone else help please?:( I really want to play again:(
-
I haven't read the whole thread, but I'll just throw something into the mix: If you can't fix installshield, then you could do a repair installation of Windows using your Windows CD. That should return everything to original condition, and you can do it without wiping all your files. Just a thought...
-
You could try going to the Freespace FTP and downloading all the VP files. Then get the HotU crackpack from my FAQ and you've pretty much got everything you need to run FS2.
It will take you a long time to download everything though. The FTP is busy.
-
He doesn't need to download the .vp files, he's got the cd :hammer:
Follow the link in Karajorma's signature (Karajorma's Freespace FAQ) and follow the instructions on how to upgrade the HOTU crackpack.
-
Yeah but it's not working that well :)
I suggest getting as many off the VP files off the CD as you can. There are links in my FAQ to VPView. Grab that and check that the VP files aren't corrupt. Once you've done that tell us what you've managed to remove.
-
where would I find the vp files?
-
Ummmm guys......The Cds worked, not the Iso's, the real Cds. THey installed. The oonly thing is, is it normal to not see the autorun screen and go straight to installing? Cause that's what happened. THanks for all of the help. I really appreciate it. I'll probably be back when I find a bug or my comp crashes mid-mission.
-
or it might have been the HotU reg patch I got. Either way. IT WORKS!!
-
EDITED cause Kie solved his problem while I was typing :D
-
meh. 68 posts needed to solve this problem :)
and in the end he fixed it himself... :nervous:
-
now I need to find drivers for my Raiderpro p-210.
-

what were you going to say?
-
Basically what VP files to get off of the CD and which ones to download and where to put them :)
-
Ah, what are some good mods and where can I find them. where can I find the Scroll of "Insert wierd name here" campaign?
-
It's not finished yet so the only way you can play it is to learn a skill valuable to them and join the team :)
-
I see. Another thing. I have an error problem. It's on another thread which you apparently found already
