Hello all, I'm new to the forums but I've been playing FS2 since it came out
I've been trying to FRED a mission with lots of ships....total of 65 fighters, 6 destroyers, 8 corvettes, and 8 cruisers. Trouble is, every time i try to play it, it crashes around 30 seconds - 1 minute in average. I removed all the events and reinforcements, and anything else script-like, and it still happens. Error check gives nothing I was just wondering if there is a limit to the amount of ships that the engine can handle, and if this is the reason the mission keeps crashing...
Any help would be appreciated

:welcome:
Yup, there's a limit... and it looks like you passed it. ;)
Generally it's not a good idea to make a mission with lots of ships - especially capital ships. If you just want lots of fighters, then you could probably just make three wings that have a lot of waves.
For more information, read this (http://volitionwatch.com/articles/ArticleDisp.php?ID=26) article.

Hahahaha, thanks man
In defense of my mission, it was pretty much a ripoff of bearbaiting where you have to fly through a cloud of fighters and kill some destroyers beams before they get in range of your capital ships...
I guess it was doomed anyway, since the mission had ships up to 30km apart, in addition to 99999 of them...still, its a damn shame, since i made me think of world war 2 bomber missions...

This battle wouldn't happen to take place over the Sanctuary Moon of Endor would it ;)

Craft limits aside, the BOE syndrome so to speak is interesting. I think you can have the player participate in a large epic battle, but you must be very creative in how you design the mission.

Yup. Last I checked, Blaise Russel had a couple of BOE-style missions in S:AH, but he did them right and made them interesting.

When someone with a fair bit of FRED experience has a go at a BoE mission they may be able to pull it off quite well. The problem is when someone with no experience with FRED tries it and then proceeds to make all the mistakes that Goober's article points out.

I decided to give it one last try before i deleted it, and it ran perfectly somehow....I was too busy being in shock to do anything, so my side's cap ships got torn apart, but i got some cool screenshots from it.
And my battle took place near the endor sun, not the moon :p
Thanks everyone.
