Title: High Poly Mjolnir
Post by: redmenace on July 17, 2005, 06:18:30 pm
We need someone to convert this please. Any volunteers?

It would be awesome if someone would bake all these textures together.

I'll see what I can do!

EDIT: I don't have the atile's... are they in use?  And Raa's right, this thing is going to be a tad bit on the slow side.

I looked, and it seems they're not used. Since I didn't have them either.

The model needs to be rotated 90 degrees (especially if you want to preserve backward compatability) but all in all it's great looking.

But I'll still let Stratcomm do the conversion here... I'll just play with it in renders. >.>

Can't wait to have this baby in game, though.

I agree, but the community could benefit from one that can be made to self-aim as well.  I reccomend 2 versions.

FireCrack: I'm afraid not.  Even if baking worked for me (it doesn't) I'd still be sacraficing a ton of quality to compress those maps down, even to a huge size.  The good news is that it's not as bad as it could be (6 maps, ~1000 polys each) given the sheer number of polys on this model.  I had to rebuild the LODs, but I went ahead and added debris and a forward-pointing variant for future campaigns.  If there are any other maps that aren't FS-standard, let me know and I'll put them up somewhere.  Hopefully Raa will get this from me before the night's up and have it hosted properly.

So if I don't get a pm in the next few minutes, I wish you luck finding a host for the file....  (erm that's not sarcastic or threatening.... I hope. >.> )

It worked fine until I added the debris.  Let me try a restart, because PCS and Modelview have no problems with it.

EDIT: Kara, if you see this you really should smack me.  I know better than to put something I'm testing in a place where it can get overridden by junk files.  It works fine now, Raa will hopefully upload a minor update tomorrow but anyone who wants to play with it can go ahead.

This is the original IIRC. It just got skinned and then forgotten.

I got in contact with the person that had the textured version.

Thanks Raa.

I'm almost certain that Mikhael is responsible for the geometry.  There were a couple of texturing jobs done on it though, and I'm honestly not sure whose this is.  That's where redmenace would know, as he's the one who got the mapped file in the first place.  That said, this is perhaps the coolest-looking HTL upgrade I've ever had the luxury of using.  It's a bit resource-intensive, but it's an awesome piece of work.

Anyway, I went ahead and broke off chunks to use as debris, and rebuilt the LODs partly.  The file "beamsaber_fixed.POF" is a variant with the cannon pointing forward; any future campaigns should probably use this since you can point it where it needs to go much more easily.  Oh, for those who downloaded the file last night: you got the full deal, but for whatever reason the debris object list got erased.  So all of the debris were in the model, but would never have rendered.

Damn that thing looks awesome in game!

Only problem is: "Couldn't open texture 'LOD3' referenced by model 'beamsaber.pof'" (same with beamsaber_fixed.pof of course).

You do realize that the included LOD3 map is a .bmp right?  Don't think that will actually get rid of the warning message. ;)

Is it possible for someone to manually place all the maps into a larger map, and then re-map the mjorlin?
Title: High Poly Mjolnir
Post by: StratComm on July 19, 2005, 08:41:56 am
Probably not, it's tiled like crazy and combining the maps will make that impossible.  I could maybe combine the two glowing textures into one as none of them are tiled, but that'd just take us from the current 6 maps down to 5.

I still remember i made a animation with this a long time ago. Yes it's Mik's. I believe we were talking about a high-poly version of the Mjolnir back then, dunno the exact reasion why he made it:)

I was having fun, Darkage. I was just buggering about with Lightwave and decided to work on the Mjolnir. That's the version YOU have.

This version is the medium poly version I did for FSOpen.

My texture editing tools are woefully inadequate, and I'd like to keep the new map DDS.  Can someone merge beam2.dds with rbase.pcx, along with the -shine and -glow textures from mv_textures into one map each (one diffuse, one spec, one glow)?  I'm thinking side-by-side, 512x1024 for diffuse and whatever fits for the rest.  Making those maps fit side-by-side shouldn't be too hard to map, I just can't combine them adequately with the tools that I have (points at DaBrain, if he has the chance)

's easy to do that. I can give you a map file with them all together.

In fact, i think that in max, you can crop maps for texturing. It's been something I was interested in trying, but never actually got around to doing.

This is an excellent model, and I hope it gets included in the next vps.  However, the lod2 or lod1 (I'm not sure what the distances are for each) texture could probably be reduced somewhat, since all the high-detail blue glows look really bad at medium distance, before it gets loded down to the lower quality versions.

This is a DDS plugin for the GIMP actually.  I'm not sure if you are using Windows or not but there is win32 binaries available.  Haven't tried them though.  It works pretty good under Linux, with only a couple of 64-bit related changes required to work for me.  The plugin has crashed a couple of times on me, but that could be 64-bit related, and it didn't take GIMP down with it so I was able to save in a different format, restart GIMP, and keep working as normal.
