In FS1, there was that mission where you had to disable a HOL cruiser, but the SC Taranis jumps in and destroys it. You are supposed to fail.
I found that if you destroy or damage severly the Taranis, or if you disable its engines or disarm it, the HOL cruiser blows and you lose.
However, I found a loop hole. Destroy all of the Taranis' guns EXCEPT for its two rocket launchers located on the side of it.
Destroy all HOL and Shivan fighters, disarm and disable the HOL cruiser. Then.....nothing happens. The Taranis just flies around the whole time occasionally launching cluster bombs. However, the HOL cruiser will survive. In your briefing, command said that when disabled and disarmed, a GTA transport would arrive and it would jump out, but no transports come no matter how long you wait.
Then, I found that if the HOL cruiser is not destroyed yet, and you blow up most of the cargo, six Shaitan class Shivan bombers jump in and go for the HOL cruiser. I think there were five or six wings.
After this, nothing happens. You have to end up killing on of 'em.
Another one is when you destroy or at least protect the Plato on its way to the jump node, it doesn't jump out.
On Pandoras' Box, the mission where you are ambushed by the Shivans at their cargo depot, the important cargo containers all blow up before you reach them. This is not so.
I was able to scan one of the cargo containers before it blew. And you know what it said? Nothing. Hmm....guess V didn't expect anyone to do that....
My final weird thing I found was in the mission when you have to escort the three freighters with the shivan shield systems from an installation. A group of vasudans jump in and are then attacked by the HOL. A group of vasudans Isis transports always survive and head together towards the installation. By the time you reach the jump node and beat the mission, they all reach the same way point, and begin slamming into each other. Quite funny, but ultimately weird. ;7

I had always figured about the Taranis mission, but I'd never heard anyone actually do it. The Pandora's Box bug is certainly odd, though.
As for the installation mission, I found that they always jump out.

I've seen this one in person. It was very odd...

Did you see the debriefing? You fail the mission. You're assumed to be working for the Shivans and are placed under interrogation.

I've never seen that happen. One docks; the other just futzes around since multidocking didn't work then.

Seriously? Never saw that before. *goes to open FRED*

Are you talking about FSPort? I don't remember anything being able to dock with an Arcadia in FS1. The Port may have allowed it, since FS2 Arcadias have the little docking spot at the front. All I've ever seen is a bunch of Isis transports bumping into each other until I come over and mercifully kill them all.
Out of the Dark, Into the Night
I think we were referring to "Hammer and the Anvil" here. Only 3-4 missions off; close enough. ;)

FS1 Arcadias had dockpoints; I remember seeing them in FS1 FRED...
-
'Tis odd, since I never remember seeing them myself. I always had my transports coming out of the fighterbay (which was very odd to watch), since there was never a dockpoint.
That, or the docking point never worked for me.

Well, it's also entirely possible my memory's shot, and since I don't have FS1 installed anymore...

The mission with the Taranis and the HOL cruiser was designed so that the Taranis jumps in and prevents the GTA from capturing the cruiser. That`s why there`s no transport. :V: also made an event to self-destruct the cruiser just in case, but it`s not perfect.
I managed to do it myself, but I don`t know exactly how. (I think I didn`t take out all the weapons on the Taranis).
Once I had to destroy the HOL cruiser myself to end the mission! This reminds me of Warcraft 2 where that knight is killed by the Orcs and you can`t save him (a big map with lots of islands, can`t remember the knight`s name). I entered the cheat code and saved him. I killed the Orcs with him (saved me the bother of transporting my troops to the Orc camp) and then searched the map for each and ever remaining Orc and killed them. After 30 minutes of searching the map for hidden submarines I realized that the knight has to die for the mission to end.

 When you destroy the Plato? How can it not jump out if it`s destroyed? And how in the world did you manage to save the Plato from the Shivan fighters which you can hardly scratch at that time (cheating doesn`t count) I guess the Plato doesn`t have jump out orders because there`s no way you can save it. (This mission is called Out of the Dark, Into the Night, IIRC, when you first meet the Shivans)

It can be saved. I've done it on medium by loading up with Disruptors and Furies, having my wingmen do the same, and concentrating exculsively on the Shaitans and bomb interception. I got to to the node, and there it sat for two minutes before the Shivans finally got that last bomb past me and blew it away.

OK, the first time you play the game you don`t know that you have to load Furies and Disruptors. :V: apparently forgot that there are maximalists when designing the game (see cb after High Noon stating that the Colossus suffered moderate hull damage even though you`ve destroyed all four beams in Bearbeiting and the C was on 100%)

Apparently V figured out that we were able to destroy the Shivans--they had a bonus objective for when you destroy one of the Plato's attackers, and then you get a medal when you protect the Galatea and destroy an attacker.
