Title: Where in the world is... you.
Post by: Martinus on July 18, 2005, 10:20:22 am
[color=66ff00]I figured it might be interesting to use google maps to point out where we all are.

//maps.google.com

To see roughly where I am type in Belfast and scroll left and down a bit until you find a place called Lurgan in 'map' view. You have to be 6 notches down on the magnification bar to see the label.

Not surprisingly, it's a lot lower resolution than the U.S. but it's enough to show what the area is like.

Can't find the place, sorry....

It doesn't seem to have any maps for the Netherlands, either.

[color=66ff00]brings an entirely new meaning to 'I can see your house from here'. :)

Seems only major cities have full resolution, they're the ones picked out in a darker colour at lower zoom levels.

EDIT: Strange, you're right Vyper. Perhaps they're doing full res on clear days as they are able?

The map is obviously several years old. My house is finished, but all the others (which are done by now) are not even begun.

If you zoom out a bit, you can catch some of the awesome view of the entire valley that I have :D

Heh - this is cool. Unfortunately, it doesn;t have any real maps of my house at home, but the pics of the uni go up to the highest detail setting :)

See that H shaped building in the top left? That's where I have most of my classes. It's a 2 minute walk :D

Why doesn't it have any hi-res pics of my house, or even my country? I'm sad.

This picture is obviously over a year old, as the set of buildings I live in is still under construction in it.
http://uploads.hexellent.com/userfiles/Thorn/myhouse.jpg
Just to the right of the red thingy, you can see one completed building, half of the one I'm in, and the space for the third.
The big white building is a high school, and to the left is a Home Depot.

And this is how to get to DB's place from my house.

What he said.

Google Earth and NASA's WorldWind are superior because they don't falsely advertise - UNLIKE M$'s TerraServer. "Terra" my arse.

Anyway, I'm trying to learn the lat/long of my house by heart. It's hard:  Lat 311.42"N, Long  3544.32"E - according to Google Earth. Worldwind has me at 31.73531/35.19558. Weird.
