Title: Best Games Ever?
Post by: aldo_14 on July 18, 2005, 05:01:25 pm
Yes, another pointless opinion thread.  Started largely because I'm bored off my tits tonight.... post your favourite games* of all time, for those of us who have not played them.

My vote would be for Startopia
(http://www.rakrent.com/rtsc/pix/startopia/star-sickbay.jpg)
It's a management game (zzz) set in space (yay?) with a quirky sense of Hitchhikers-style humour (yay!), made by the sadly closed down Muckyfoot.  IMO it's the pinnacle of that style of game; the graphics are still more than good enough, it's colourful and full of personality, and the gameplay mechanics are spot on.

Best of all, it's available for about a tenner nowadays.

*games plural because otherwise it'd likely be mainly Freespace.

One of the best examples of storyline integration that I have ever seen - even though it may make me seem traitorous, it surpasses Freespace by far in it's quality and the ability to keep you engaged for hours, just to find out what happens next.

You might as well have a poll with one option.

But aside from freespace, I migrated over here from the descent forums, so #2 would be d3.

Seconded.  I remember, way back in the day on my 33MHz 486 DX/2 I would play that game all day long.  It was the partware version, so I could only go up to episode 20 before it was over.  I absolutely hated not being able to continue, and I hated it even more when I couldn't get the rest, because it wasn't published over the shelf.  And now, it cant be run anymore because of machine speed being too high :(.

That game was full of dark and decitful people, and the plot was always thrilling.  With lines like "Mission overwith, I'm going to bed.", followed coldly by "With whom?" shows the general attitude of the game.  The soundtrack was also excellent for the time.  Ahh, the memories...

Perfect Dark and Halo because they are primarily responsible for the introduction of good FPS to consoles.

IMHO, I love Descent 3 for its online multiplayer.

Freespace is awesome because it is very easy to mod.

The Day of the Tentacle. 'Nuff said.

The best game ever?

That would be Final Fantasy III (US)/FF 6 (Jap).

Incredible - that's the only word that can describe this game.
It's damn long. It look pretty well, even though it's only a SNES game.
The story is the very very good. And the game is damn long.
It's like an (very) interacive movie.

My second choice: Wing Commander III
Wow... what a game. The graphics look outdated, but the movies are still great. (Yeah, the compression looks horrible...)
The story isn't that great, only good, but the feeling created by the atmosphere is perfect.

Part IV was nice too, but I like the third part better.

And on rank three is StarCraft:
The cutscenes were nice. The graphics never looked very good, but hey, it's the ultimate multiplayer game.
I could play it every day... all day.
But I try not to play it anymore... I kinda get addicted very fast. ;)

Hard to say. I spent an awful amount of time on Red Alert, but I wouldn't consider it the best game ever. Same for FS2, and I don't consider it any better than WingCo4, Tie Fighter or IW2.
I kindda loved the rather unknown Shadow of the Horned Rat. I played UFO for 6 months until I beat it... IOremember being completly under Ishar3's charm, way, way back then. And Diablo (the first one), it was moody as hell. Duke Nukem3D rocked my boat for a long time, so did doom and heretic before. But there was also Indi and the last crusade, and indi and the fate of atlantis, which were awesome. Can't forget Lotus3, then Pod and Fatal Racing, even if racing games aren't my favourites. Ultimate Body Blows, Mortal Kombat, DoA3? Gunship2000? Civilisation? Setllers or Conquest of the New World? Alone in the Dark? Battle Isle2? The fabulous Lands of Lore or Eye of the Beholder2? Warcraft or Command and Conquer? Really, the best of the best? How could I say? I've been around since before VGA replaced EGA, I've played too many awesome games, I must forget many, like Powermonger or Populous, or Little Big Adventure!

So if I absolutly have to choose one... Joust! the first game I ever bought with my own money :D

What about Digger?  Or maybe alleycat?  Or Sopwith?  Or Secret Agent Man?  Commander Keen?

No, I didnt like those games.

BTW, Whiplash was better than Fatal Racing ;).

hey, the Fatal Racing that came with my voodoo2 was absolutly awesome, with the hundred or something tracks, all completly different, and some trully crazy, and the multiplayer was insane :D

Fatal Racing having 100 or so tracks??  AFAIK, it was 24, and exactly 24.  Are we thinking of the same game?

BTW:  The Coffin Run > All other tracks.

Was indeed 24 or something, at the begining. Then you unlocked the pro cup, and then the final cup (fatal cup or something, I suppose, can't remember). Ok, that's not 100, that's 75.
Last cup had mobile springboards, vertical scorkcrews and other completly stupid but insanely fun tracks.

Or maybe you're thinking Ultimate Race, which was cool looking but lame.

Older games are teh l33t.

Adventure, Zork (or anything from Infocom), King's Quest (or anything from Sierra up until around 1996), X-Wing, TIE Fighter, X-COM, Riven, Freespace.

Though I think Tetris has a strong case for best game ever.  Or at least for most time wasted and most number of clones made. :p

That's not what I remember.  That's not what I remember at all.  Either the US version was gimped, or you are mixing different games together.  In Whiplash, I don't remember nearly as many tracks.  There were eight in each cup, one for each sponsor (car).  The third cup, which was hidden, was full of stupid things that looked like they were just frikkin odd.  I remember one that was a 4 way suicide clover thing, and it was just full of utter nonsense.

Sorry, me thinks that would be solitaire or deminer :p

Suddy: Don't know, I remember it that way, I might be wrong, but I don't think I am. My version was pretty special tho, it was a voodoo2 only version, that came with the card and you could not get anywhere else, it was full of eye candy that you didn't have with the regular version.
I have no idea what whiplash is, btw.

Here's my list, in no particular order:

1.) Deus Ex - The first one, not the second one. I didn't care for the second one so much.

2.) Starcraft (and the expansion)

3.) Red Alert (1 & 2)

4.) FS (both) - Of course

5.) Half Life

6.) Doom series

Yeah, I'm a gamer :)

EDIT: Oh yeah, and Quake 2

For PC games I'll nominate Sacrifice.

It's an action RTS game like Uprising or Battlezone where you control a mage in a third-person view. The game's got a great atmosphere and every one of the game's gods and their realms are nicely fleshed out. There are basically 5 campaigns (one for every god) in the game, but it's possible to mix missions.

Probably Silent Hill 2. I'd say series but I didn't like the first one much, third one didn't have the same quality of storyline (still good though) and while the fourth had that, the gameplay was terrible.

No particular order:
Legacy of Kain series
New PoP series
Metal Gear Solid series (excluding the parts where you actually play the game... which I hate.)
Sacrifice
Hostile Waters
Myst series
Doom 3

Beyond Good & Evil will probably be on that list soon too, but I haven't gotten around to playing it even though I bought it about a week ago.

X-COM 1 (http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=4966)  and X-COM 2 (http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=4967)  (Even though I still can't beat the **** second one. Got right up to the end...and then some Sectoid MC'd my guy on the Disruptor launcher. Kaboom.) 3 was for crap. Never tried Interceptor. I know there was at least one other game in the series beyond that, but have never actually seen it, only heard it referred to.

Urban Assault was incredibly fun...pity I only discovered it while messing with the demo long after release. I still haven't found a copy.

Escape Velocity: Nova (http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/evn/)  Sidescroller...well, not quite. But fun, great story. And never, NEVER trade in a souped-up Mod Starbridge for anything short of a Polaris ship or a RAGE Gunboat.

Starship Troopers: Terran Ascendancy (http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=4290) Squad-level realtime, 3D, graphically owed to the movie, gameplay owed to the book, plot not quite either. Great fun. Still working on the last few missions...

Steel Panthers 3: The last of the Avalon Hills-style hexed-based uber-detailed wargames made for PC. Command forces from many countries, varying in size up to a brigade, through a variety of time periods, starting in 1939 and continuing to 1999. Play several historical campaigns, or a variety of historical (and a few what-if) scenarios. Have it generate a campaign for you to play. Build a campaign or scenario to play. It's great, great fun, nicely intuitive so you don't get confused, but also capable of the full complexity and detail one would expect from a tabletop game.

MechCommander, MechCommander Gold, MechCommander 2, and Magic's Unoffical Expansion for MC2. (http://www.dropshipcommand.com/forum/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=15&topic_id=3886&mesg_id=3886&page=)

MegaMek. (http://megamek.sourceforge.net/idx.php?pg=main) It's Classic BattleTech for your computer, complete with multiplayer over the 'net. Get it. NOW.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. I could spend days describing how this game is simply soul-owning, but I won't. Suffice to say it is.

Oh man, there are so many...
FS1/2 of course, FF6, MGS series, Half-Life 1, Deus Ex, MW3, Zelda games especially Link's Awakening and Wind Waker (I know it's a sin but I haven't played OoT all the way through), all Metroid games except the original (I'm not hardcore enough to beat a metroid game w/o save points), Tie Fighter, NWN, and finally an honorable mention to Golden Sun and its sequel for keeping me entertained on many airplane rides.

I should probably rephrase that; I do think SH1 is a great game. I just don't like it as much as the other ones. It didn't really scare me, and the story didn't grab me. I'm not sure how the sequels were samey though. Well, the gameplay of 2 and 3, certainly, but 4's was fairly different. Besides, SH is all about the story (and, well, the horror, but I found 2 and 3 strongest in that regard...) and I'm not seeing how any of the stories are particularly 'samey'. I think each of the games tell very different stories.

Super Mario World
Super Mario 64
Half Life 2
Sim City 2000
The Sims 1 & 2
Freespace 1 & 2

Age of Empires 1, 2, and probably 3 when it comes out
Age of Mythology
GTA 3 & GTA: VC
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

The Legacy of Kain series is in my mind the best. Mafia is also high in the list [rant] Although i don't really see the point of GTA-style games. To me, they are lika EAs FIFA series - Same ****, different day. I don't see what people are so hyped about. Also, when you cram the words b***h, s**t, f**k, motherf***ker, homie, ****** all into one sentence, doesn't make a game cool  :ick: [/rant] So GTA sucks, Kain rules and Raziels life is totally FUBAR.

Super Mario 64. It is simply all that a 3D Mario platformer should be.

Also Starfox 64 (Lylat Wars in Europe), it is insanely addictive and I stilll find myself going back to try and beat my high score (summat like 1650 now). Only things I dislike about it are that in Europe it runs slower (its the old displaying every frame but PAL can only display 50 fps as opposed to 60 so game runs at 5/6th speed on PAL problem), and there is a lot of FPS lag caused by explosions and other 2D effects. But its ace on an emulator cos there's no fps lag and it runs at a constant 60fps yippee! Star Fox Assault isn't a patch on it. When will they learn all we want is Arwing, Arwing and did I mention Arwing?!

Can't wait for Shadows of Lylat :D

Well, you can get new copies of it off eBay for around $5 these days.

If you do get the full version, be sure to grab the unofficial patches. The initial release was insanely buggy, but one of the programmers kept working on it long after Ion Storm Dallas was dissolved and got it into a mostly-stable state.

Awesome game. Everything about it is obviously the work of some very dedicated people.

This is a thoroughly evil question, but I'll give it a try.

In no particular order:

Half Life
System Shock 2 (haven't played the first one - need to get a Win98 machine working first)
Monkey Island 1 - 4
ICO (delta, you have exquisite taste  )
Beyond Good & Evil (same goes for you, Rictor :D )
Giants: Citizen Kabuto
Grim Fandango
Thief and Thief 2
FS and FS2 (duh)
G-Police (PS1 game, sort of helicopter thing, very very good)
Wipeout 2097
Battlezone 2

There are lots of others I love, but these are my all-time favourite "must-play" games.

In no order:

C&C95
X-COM: Ufo Defense (the original), maybe TFtD
Metroid series, but mainly Metroid 3
Zelda 3 and OoT
Chrono Trigger
Battlezone 2 (but it has issues)
Wing Commander: Armada (the first, baby)
Goldeneye 007 for N64
Dance Dance Revolution (either you love it or hate it)
Crusader series
Syndicate Wars series
Sonic CD

Okay okay, I'll limit myself to that many... but I know there's more! Oh and of course, FSOpen. :nervous: :p

[edit] Ack! I forgot Resident Evil 4. Okay, I'm done for real now! ;) [/edit]

Too many to list here, and I know I'm leaving off some of my favorites, but here goes (in no particular order):

-The Descent series, for the most pulse-pounding and challenging multiplayer experience ever, as well as introducing me to the amazing world that is the Internet through PlanetDescent (which I happen to now be a staff member of).  Long live 6DOF! :D

-The FreeSpace series, for obvious reasons, and because it has the best singleplayer storyline and best villain of any game I've ever played

-Twisted Metal 2 for PS1, for those times when you just have to blow the **** out of other cars

-Demolition Racer for PS1, for those times when you have to crash the hell out of other cars :p

-The original Genesis Sonic games (1, 2, and 3; I've never played Sonic and Knuckles), for being the first real video games I ever played.  They're still a blast today.

-Super Mario Brothers, just...well...because :p

-Donkey Kong Country 2, for being the most engaging 2D platformer I've ever played; I could play this for hours on end with no problem.

-Tomba and Tomba 2 for PS1. They were event-based  2D platformer games with 3D graphics.  Plus, Tomba had pink hair and fought evil pigs by biting them, which made him one of the coolest heroes ever. :p

-Pac-Man World for PS1.  While I acknowledge the original as one of the kings of games, I enjoyed this 20th anniversary 3D platformer much more.

-The Incredible Machine 3.0 for the PC.  I started playing this game almost 10 years ago, and there are still a few puzzles I've never been able to figure out.  (I've honestly never looked for a hint site after all these years; I still hope to figure out all of them on my own. :))  The redbook soundtrack was also awesome, with everything from hip-hop to techno to hayseed.

-The Myst series, for being the most beautiful games I've ever played, as well as the most challenging.  I can't say that I didn't look at hints for these games, though.  Myst 4 was the most engrossing gaming experience I've ever had; it truly felt like I was in another world.

-Starship Titanic for the PC, an adventure game that introduced me to Douglas Adams's zany brand of humor.  It featured robots that you could actually talk to by typing in phrases; this may sound cheesy, but they had over 10,000 lines and 16 hours of dialogue to throw back at you.  An incredibly fun, and funny, game. :)

-Age of Mythology, the only RTS I've played so far (nope, I've never tried Starcraft and Warcraft, before you crucify me) that I've really enjoyed.  The storyline was great, as was the voiceacting, and the graphics were simply beautiful.

-The Ratchet and Clank series for PS2.  Although I felt that some parts dragged out for too long (gathering bolts for massive weapons), I have to respect any game whose stated purpose is to "blow **** up" :p

-Microsoft's Solitaire, Minesweeper, and Spider Solitaire, for giving me countless hours of frustration and making me want to smash my PC to bits :p

-The Legend of Zelda series (specifically Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons, Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask), a truly timeless gaming icon.  I only beat Ocarina of Time earlier this year (it was the first time I ever had an N64), and I'm actually still working on Majora's Mask, but I love both of the games, as I did the two Game Boy Color offerings.

-Super Smash Bros. Melee, for giving me countless hours of entertainment at college.  I'm buying a Gamecube just for this game alone (the other great games on the system are just a bonus), and I'd consider it to be worth every penny.

I think that's it, but I'm sure a few have slipped my mind.  I can never be accused of liking the newest and most popular games, but I can be accused of holding dearly onto older games that didn't sell too well, just because they've brought me so much joy. :)

By genre...

• PnP:  Dungeons and Dragons
I'm shocked and awed that nobody has mentioned a single non-electronic game so far.  Anyway, your mileage may vary, depending on your dungeon master and the edition of the rules you use, but when a week of eyestrain has caught up with you, and you want to keep gaming, a session of D&D is just what the doctor called for.

• Board Game:  Risk
I got my father's 1980 version of the game (yep, four years older than me) as a bit of a hand-me-down, and I can still play it for hours with a few friends.  I'm not sure any video game has really conveyed the same feeling of the world's fate hinging on result of a handful of die rolls.

• Cards:  n/a
It's been a long while since I gave up playing TCGs, since my budget couldn't support such a habit.  For the same reason, I really don't do too much gambling, otherwise I'd probably be playing poker every weekend.  Just throwing the catagory out there to inspire others.

• Minis:  n/a
Again, just throwing the catagory out there for others to consider.

Maybe I should hit the video games now, before someone mistakes me for being Amish and rallys a lynch mob...

• FPS:  Descent series
Pick one of them.  I like it.  Between the Descent series, FreeSpace 2, and the MechWarrior series, I've worn out four joysticks.  Two of them broke when I played Descent exclusively.  This is one of two or three games that I continually come back to, regardless of what else I've been playing.

• RTS:  Black and White
I really don't like the traditional RTS.  I mean, I really don't like the traditional RTS.  "I build 1000 tanks (or Zerglings) for the win," pisses me the hell off.  You can't very well make a game that rewards such silliness, while calling it a strategy game.  Black and White, while not perfect, takes an entirely different approach to the genre, taking away some of the player's control over production and such, while giving the units a bit of free will.  There's certainly more depth of gameplay in Black and White than every traditional RTS I've played, combined.  I'm anxiously awaiting the sequel.

• Turn-Based Strategy:  X-COM:  UFO Defense/Enemy Unknown
There can be no other.  If you've not played this game before, see if you can get your hands on a copy of the July 2000 issue of PC Gamer, with the CD.  Beg, borrow, or steal as necessary because it's damn hard to name a game with more replay or entertainment value than X-COM.  (The game had the subtitle UFO Defense in the US and Enemy Unknown in the UK.)

• Space Sim:  FreeSpace 2
FreeSpace is probably the best mission-based space sim I've played ever.  I typically prefer more open-ended space-sims, but look at the options...  FreeLancer fell flat, having been released with an entirely static universe and a braindead AI.  The next most recent option would be the Privateer series, which is now too old to be compatible with most input devices (assuming you can trick it into running on a Windows box).

• Traditional Sim:  Silent Hunter II
First, I've not picked up Silent Hunter III, yet, so it could very well be a better game.  Silent Hunter II just knocks my socks off in terms of realism and tension.  If you think it takes zombies to make a game scary, wait until you're commanding a German U-Boat, listening to those allied destroyers closing in on the surface.  When you start hearing splashes and realize you've lost this round of cat-and-mouse, you'll be about ready to jump out of your pants.

• RPG:  Planescape Torment
There can be no other.  To start off with, Planescape is my favorite D&D setting.  The developers did a wonderful job staying true to the setting too.  Moreover, the character you play is built in such a way that you can play him however you want to, and it fits.  Dialogue options and NPCs are built to give you wide-open gameplay, without making it too easy to stray from the campaign's plot line.  Unfortunately, Torment's only downside was that it failed to set a trend.  To this day, RPGs are either plotless micromanagement RTS's, like the Diablo series or any MMORPG you can name, or they never leave the relative safety of the [Better Left] Forgotten Realms.

• Racing:  n/a
Actually, I'm still looking for a good (and relatively recent) racing game for the PC.  With the Need For Speed series taking the route of the ricer-racer, I'm left wanting when looking for a game using high-end sports cars or going off-road for something akin to World Rally Racing.

• Freeware:  MegaMek (http://megamek.sourceforge.net)
It's already been mentioned, but it deserves to be mentioned again.  If you think MechWarrior and MechCommander have strayed too far from their BattleTech roots, download MegaMek.  If you want to see a tabletop game faithfully transfered to the computer screen, download MegaMek.  If you're just looking for a badass strategy game, and only have about $1.20 in your wallet, save the cash for food, and download MegaMek.

Black & White SUCKED as an RTS.

Problem being, so do most other RTS's.  In a genre where the main strategic element is development of a build order that lets you turn out fifty tanks or a hundred zerglings faster than your opponent, Black and White focused the player on other, deeper strategies.  There were flaws, such as your creature being excessively difficult to manage, but at least Lionhead dared to depart from the tired, outdated StarCraft and Command & Conquer gameplay models with Black and White.

The problem with B&W, is that it was not an RTS, it was an RPS (Role Playing Strategy).  You cannot compare B&W to Warcraft, because they follow two entirely different guidelines.

As for your racing genre, Pick up GT4 for PS2.  Or if you don't have a PS2, get GT2 for PSX and run ePSXe on your computer.  Both of those are incredibly awesome racing sims.

Speaking of cheats, ES3: Morrowind was once my favorite game.  However, I found the incentive to cheat to advance character development.  And once I found out how easy it was to cheat, the game got boring.  On one hand, cheating was neccessary to get thru certain parts of the game quickly, and on the other hand, cheating completely removed the challenge part of the game.  And for that self-inflicted reason, I can't enjoy the game the way I used to :(.

Sounds like you need to play Ground Control . OK, it's more of an RTT (Real-Time Tactical) game than an RTS, but it's excellent. You can choose your units to start with, then you get deployed by dropship to the battlefield and have to accomplish your objectives with only those units. No reinforcements, no building, just maneuvering and tactics. And it was available for download for free from Fileplanet. It might still be there. :)

EDIT: Here (http://www.fileplanet.com/142438/140000/fileinfo/Ground-Control-Full-Game-w/-GC2-Multiplayer-Demo-%5BCLOSED%5D) it is. It says there aren't any keys left, but I'm sure you're resourceful enough to fix that. Or you can get it for about five quid from a bargain bin somewhere. :)

Post by: CP5670 on July 23, 2005, 02:11:38 pm
This is all fairly subjective and is related to what games I happened to play first. All of these are computer games, as I never got much into consoles.

FPS: Deus Ex (2000). When I first got this I played it for 14 hours straight; it was that engrossing. Extremely long (which I consider a good thing), very detailed story, open ended mission design and immersive atmosphere. There were a few weapon balance issues though. This is a tough category with a huge selection of choices and Descent 2 and Unreal come close, but the incredible variety of goofiness that can be performed in Deus Ex puts it on top. I have spent more time screwing around with game glitches than playing normally, and I've fully played through the game eight times with all the side quests.

Space sim: Freespace 2 (1999). Duh. Very few choices here in the first place, but this had an outstanding storyline, great gameplay, versatile mod support and an overall polished feel. Independence War 2 was better in some ways but its clunky interface made it less enjoyable than it might have been.

RTS: Command and Conquer (1995). One of the first RTS games, and much better story and campaigns than any of the subsequent C&C games. Side balance was generally pretty good as well. I spent a lot more with RA than this because of its skirmish mode and mod capabilities, but this was easily the better game overall. TA was an excellent multiplayer game but had boring singleplayer campaigns and I never found Starcraft all that great. I haven't kept track of RTS games in the last couple of years though.

Multiplayer: Unreal Tournament (1999). I thought I would make a separate category here, since multiplayer games are judged quite differently from singleplayer ones. Lots of gameplay options, almost perfect weapon balance, excellent map design and great netcode for its time. I was a hardcore player of this for over two years and had risen quite high in the official ladders at one point. The newer UT games are better in many ways but Epic messed up the weapon balance from the original one. After six years, it also still has the best, most detailed textures of any game in existence.

Racing: Ballistics (2001). By far the fastest racing game out there. Very high fun factor, although it has some bugs and hardware compatibility issues. I still play this every now and then.

Adventure: Mission Critical (1995). The best plot of any game I have ever seen, and plots are what make adventure games. Puzzles were for the most part a bit too easy though. Holmes 2: Case of the Rose Tattoo had almost as good a story and was very long, but had some annoying bugs and I'm a little partial to sci-fi games.

Puzzle: Lemmings (1992). I played the Mac version of this, which had much better graphics and music than the original DOS one. Very original concept and a great game across the board. I was completely obsessed with this one for years and I still have the hundreds of custom level plans I had drawn on paper when I was in elementary school. Never did find a level editor for it though. The expansion pack, Oh No More Lemmings, was also great. The sequels had various issues ranging from being too easy (L2) to having a bad interface (L3D).

Fighting: Time Commando (1995). Not really a conventional console style fighting game, but it probably fits best into this category. The shortest retail game I have ever played, but there are very few that match this one for sheer fun factor. Had to include it in here somewhere.

Freeware: Infotron (1993). Old Mac game, a clone of the DOS game Supaplex but with better graphics and sound. I can't count how many hours I spent with this back then. Very polished game for a free one, looked more professionally designed than most retail games at the time. I drew many custom levels for this one as well, although I didn't find a level editor until very recently and only for Supaplex. Another tough category, as I had all sorts of great stuff on my old Mac (still fire those old classics up from time to time) and the more modern Lasertank comes close too, but this was probably the best one.

I haven't really played much in the RPG, TBS of flight sim categories, so I won't say anything there.

Now that everyone is mentioning a lot of games, I take a deep dive, too.

First Person Shooter: For Single player, Quake II, Half Life and Jedi Academy. For multiplayer, Quake III. (Unreal Tournament cannot even approach Q3 in gameplay and level design!). Quake II brings up some nice memories, probably it's the only FPS which's Single Player mode does not aim to annoy the player. Jedi Knight II makes you feel like a Jedi if you play in First Person mode and have a lightsaber in your hands, slaying stormtroopers and duelling Reborn. Of course, since it's LucasArts, it can annoy you in a single second when you get killed by a single touch after you have slain your opponent in half seven times. Jedi Knight I was good as the first game to have a lightsaber, but where LucasArts made blunder is that your character was simply incompetent of fending any blaster shots. Half Life was in every aspect, single-player focused. You not only needed your aiming skills but you also needed to use some strategy. I would say you rather needed strategy than powerful weapons.
Strategy: Red Alert 1 and StarCraft. Sometimes I hate StarCraft when the AI cheats so conspicuously, but for playing home-made single player missions, it's fun. You just have to be cautious in making your maps. Red Alert is a classical. Never touch its anti-player Single player campaigns, play multiplayer instead. You have a reasonable chance against the AI even on Medium, if you are good. Nothing is more deliberating than seeing how you swarm a Soviet base with hundreds of Medium tanks, Artilleries and Rangers.
Simulator: X-wing vs. TIE Fighter and X-wing Alliance. LucasArts games have always loved humilating the human player, but what can be done? If you play without warheads, it is enjoyable and not so annoying. FreeSpace is second only XWA in gameplay, the AI also has advantages over the vulnerable human race but the main fault of this game is that your shields are useless. It's good that there is FRED, so you could make some fun missions. It is bad, however, that the AI has inhuman aiming skills.
Arcade: Descent. It was ages ago I played with it, but I remember I played with it very much. Descent III was incredibly annoying when you had to get through a room, where every sort of spikes stood out and there was lava everywhere. You could not do anything to escape your death, the lava was burning you and you simply couldn't be any fast because you had to manoeuvre between the spikes. If you collided one, your vessel stopped, enemies came, laughed around you five times and shot you down. The map designer who made that should be hanged!

I reckon Battlefront is by far the best Star Wars game. Though I never really got into the old X-wing p.c. series

I think that the game(s) I enjoyed the most had to have been Battlezone I & II, Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising, Ground Control I & II, FS, C&C, Total Annihilation, The Longest Journey, TIE Fighter, and Midtown Madness I & II.

I have to agre. X-Wing Allaince had excellent AI.

My wingmates died very rarely and scored LOT'S of kills. they reaped trough tie fighters like there was no tomoorw.

Shields were weak, but that's one thing I liked about it. Despite being a lot tougher than a TIE fighter, your X-Wing was still very vulnerable and so were you. It really FELT dngerous when a TIE was on your rear, not to mention assaulting a Star Destroyer and dodging the hail of lasers. Now those ships were dangerus. Hell, gimme a Sath any time!

NOT. The original System Shock's laser rapier was, for all intents and purposes, a lightsaber.

Too bad you missed out on the truly great FPSs like DX and SS2.

I'm assuming that you're talking about the area in level 2 that consists of caverns with acid on the ground that can take out your ship in a matter of seconds.  It's not really as hard as you remember.  You just have to keep sliding up, maneuver through the spikes carefully, and watch out for the Tubbs that enjoys pounding you into the acid. :p

Battlezone I & II,

Very good stuff here. Unlike many people, I really liked the second game and thought it had significantly better gameplay than the first, although the singleplayer campaign story was messed up.

SS2 was another great game, forgot to mention that up there. It had major problems with weapon balance and some bad design decisions that severely messed up the gameplay though, which was a real pity since it was an awesome game in many other ways.

Exactly, I just held down the slide up key and had my headlight on the whole time. Never found that part all that hard actually. The tubbs can usually be drawn out into a larger space if you know where he is and can get his attention. The thief lurking around in there can make it a little tricky, but the D3 thief was nowhere near as potent (and annoying) as the D2 one.

I agree on the weapons, but care to elaberate on the gameplay issues ?

Well, for instance, it was usually not worth using any ballistic ranged weapon at all even if you had a lot of ammo because they deteoriated so ridiculously fast. I used melee weapons something like 98% of the time all the way until I got to that passageway that leads to the Many brain room. I broke a few of my things there, but it didn't matter at that point. There was also the fact that you needed a certain skill level to use a weapon at all, which not only made no sense but also killed the incentive to explore non-critical areas to get any better weapons. There were cases where I found some weapon and ammo for it quite early on, but couldn't use it until near the end of the game because it needed a very high weapons skill level and an equally high maintenance level to be viable. The advanced level 6 weapons, which were already underpowered, were made much more worthless because of this.

The respawning was also overused; it would have kept an element of surprise if used occasionally, but since almost everything respawned and always in the same spot, it frequently made more sense to just ignore enemies and run right past them. With maximum agility this was usually easy to do. The cyborg assassin was the only thing that could outrun you, and those sucked anyway. This wasn't a stealth game and there was no point in trying to sneak by since the enemies had no trouble seeing you in dark areas, but you could just pretend they weren't there. :D

I really liked a lot of things about this game, but the actual gameplay left a lot to be desired. It wasn't really the difficulty either; Thief 2 for example was quite a bit harder but also much more fun. SS2 was in general a revolutionary game that didn't really get the basics right. We need to have a game that combines the skill system and story of this with the gameplay balance and graphics (for their time) of something like Unreal or Descent 3.

Also, I'm not sure if this was a bug or what, but if you went up to a bot and whacked it with something repeatedly, it wouldn't return fire at all. Just kept backing up. :D

This is flat-out wrong. Yes, the degradation was exaggerated, but it was also completely manageable. In the early stages of the game there are pistols and shotguns scattered all over the place, so if your weapon breaks, who cares? Just grab another one. In the later stages of the game, it's expected that you'll have upgraded your maintenance skill, and between that and the maint tools scattered all over the place, keeping your weapons in tip-top shape is easy.

Also, the assault rifle is easily the most powerful weapon in the game. With a fully-modded rifle and the Sharpshooter OS upgrade, you can take down a Rumbler in three shots!

Depends on the weapon. The deterioration was really bad on some things. Try out the viral proliferator on hard for example; that thing lost a point on just about every shot. The pistols and shotguns were easy enough to find, but once you got to the point where their ammo was plentiful enough to use regularly, you had the crystal shard available, which was overall a better weapon. It's also much harder to find replacements for the other weapons. You could upgrade your maintenance skill, but that took some time on the harder difficulties and wasn't worth it given that the shard was just as effective without needing this.

Actually the crystal shard with a decent strength (worth having anyway for the extra inventory space), the lethal weapon upgrade and exotic weapons on 3 or so was extremely powerful, had no ammo usage and didn't degrade, so that along agility on 6 (worth having anyway for running past enemies and dodging projectiles) for hit-and-run strikes made it pretty much the ultimate weapon in almost any situation. I had a pistol and a grenade launcher for the odd rumbler and a few other things that the shard was not good against, but didn't need to use those often.

The assault rifle was powerful but still not good enough considering the skills you needed to use/modify/maintain it on the harder difficulties. I found something like four of those in the entire game, and only one was in decent shape (7), so you basically needed to get level 4 maintenance just for this weapon, as the other things for which this was needed were pretty much useless. The grenade launcher with incendiary grenades was just as powerful with much lower skill costs. There isn't quite as much ammo for it, but then again rumblers are pretty rare.

heh, talking about all this makes me feel like playing through this game again. :D The only problem is that I can't get it to work on anything but 640x480 on my main computer. It works okay there but is very unstable and crashes constantly at any other resolution. My old Win98 retro game machine runs it fine at 1024x768, but isn't fast enough for any antialiasing.

[color=66ff00]I found that if you concentrate on maintainence, hack and ignore exotic weapons altogether that you end up with the ability to get cheap items from replicators (maint. tools), you can upgrade your standard to a good level and you can keep your kit in good shape using few tools.

Up your strength, agility and energy weapons to max and the laser rapier becomes deadly enough that the shard is irrelevant.

You must have amazingly high standards for "good enough" then.  Every time I've played a grunt Marine character, the game turns into a cakewalk at the precise moment I acquire enough standard weapons skill to use the assault rifle (usually around Hydro deck if I'm smart with my cybermods). It's considered in the SS2 community to be almost unbalancingly overpowered. Of course, it'll still break fast if you foolishly try to shoot everything. That's why you melee the weaker foes, and save the AR for enemies with ranged attacks, or who explode when killed.

Speaking of melee, one of the more fanatic Shockers over at TTLG has actually written a melee-only guide to finishing SS2. Yeah that's right... melee ONLY. No ranged weapons. Ever.

Yeah, Assualt Rifle shots were almost as powerful as Fusion Cannon Shots! And I could never be arsed with the Psi Powers. I'd usually sod it and go for the Assualt Rifle and Hack Skills.

The one thing I found tiresome was you were always being told 'find such a body he/she will help you' or 'come meet me at such a place' and they would always be dead.

Oh and:
