This, errr, took me a few minutes (following in the great Styxx tradition), but I wanted to test out this effect. Actually, I've known about it a few days, but I've just been keeping stuff to myself.
Anyway... take evasive action, pilot!

(I contemplated making the caption 'oh shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!'... but decided against it.)

Isn't he great people? lets give the guy a hand, our very own Setekh! master of rendering development!
It rocks, I'll be using that in future - well done (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Beware weak, watery imitations!
Bump-mapping. I just had a go at it last night, and here is what I came up with...
Another 10 minute render (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) I'll use some better lighting on the next one... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I've known about it but have no clue how to implement it. (P.O.S. Ts!!!)

in the little material reticel (four spheres) the lower right one is displacement, select bump map, then select the map, just like textures.
now I just have to wait for setekh to figure out the layered reflectence.

Now you have to make a true bump map, coz there there's also bump on the white drawings and all, and it's wrong (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I was in such a hurry I forgot to explain why I made this one. It was a misadventure into trying to implement reflections... it kind of looked like snow, and I played around with it further, and came up with that. Rendered a foggy snow scene, and there you have it. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

no no no i'm saying i've known how to do the explosions effects for over a month. i've known about bump mapping for way longer.

i was rephrasing my previous statement about knowing how to make those explosion effects (using the photoshop screen option) because snipes thought i was talking about bump mapping.
so in summary: sorry to dissapoint you Steak, but you weren't the first to employ that explosion making Technique.

White holes just spew out stuff (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Don't know much about them, haven't really been interested. Just figured they were black holes working the opposite way, spewing stuff out from a singularity.

white holes - no such thing - pure sci fi

humans...? Alone...? Yeah right. There has got to be life out there. It is so damn hard to believe that in the trillions of systems out there, and all of the unexplored sectors of space, that there isn't some form of life, Advanced, or in it's infancy...

there is one theory that states that if the universe is infinite in size then anything and everything must happen, and all at the same time. it makes sense.
-
if black holes are gateways to other universes, can white holes be gateways from other universes?
-
That's exactly what they are. Every black hole in what universe equates to a white hole in another universe. All these universes are connected, hence the name, Multiverse.

But that only can be true if the universe is infinitely varied, and because physics laws tend to stay the same, that isn't very likely. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Actually, there is irrefutable proof that life from other planets, if it indeed does exist, is intelligent - more so than humans, at least. What proof is that, you ask? The fact that they have not made contact with us, for one. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/lol.gif)

There is, without a doubt, life on other planets. The question is how many of them have intelligent life? Some of them could have life as primitive as when the dinosaurs were still roaming the Earth. Some of them could have life more advanced than us.
Maybe those very advanced races think we are not advanced enough and do not wish to make contact with us or still do not know of our existance.
The possibilities are endless........ (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

He uses Spire, a custom made program built by himself and his brother. It only runs on Linux mind you, and if your lucky most if not all of what it does can be done in Photoshop or something worked around like that.
Oh, and thanks for the compliments on the render (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Yep, as Thunder has mentioned many a time (because he bugged me about it a lot at one stage - now I bug him about it now (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)), I use Spire. However, again, he's right in that most effects I've been able to do with Spire, Thunder and I have found parallels in Photoshop. I can't say that everything will work the same or come out exactly right, but Photoshop is a huge program, and surely there are plenty of possiblities to explore. Albeit they might be hidden under a plethora of menus or paletes and an exorbitant price (one of the reasons I started the Spire project), it is indisputable that the power is all there.
That said... it's really just a matter of transparent path objects (in various programs called aliases and vectors), the same with frames, and a lot of glow effects. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Well, what I used to do was draw a triangle, and then make that glow. Worked for me... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
Hmm, to tell the truth in my latest render (which only Setekh has seen (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)) I've used a slightly different way of doing the beams than before, but I think it's probably as effective although it could use some refining.
Make a brush, give it a size of 200 and a "roundness" of 20 or something. Make it green, red, yellow - whatever the beam will be. Then make a beam shape from the beam turret to the target. Next make the brush smaller and less round again and select white. Essentially you are handpainting a beam, you know more or less what one looks like I assume? so in the end you achieve a beam. Any questions? (not to clear a description I know).
-
Yeah - do you have any way to keep the beam straight when you hand-paint it, unlike Ace and his bending beams? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/lol.gif)

Funny that, gotta love it (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
Yeah I do - you use a "straight line selection tool" any make a beam shape. This means that you can fill in the line pretty easily and hand touch it to suit your needs. I'll try and do a rapid render to show what I mean later. Also note that the straight lines on the beam probably won't matter because you'll have an explosion infront of it anyway (hopefully) (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Does PhotoShop have paths/vectors? Or is it just Illustrator? Paths are like shapes which can be resized and deformed as much as you want, but they are recalculated everytime that happens, so you never lose any quality on them. I used paths to do all the schematics and flight path in my guide to atmospheric maneuvring ("http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/hosted/array/imgarchive.php?image=69"). (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
