RIP. 85 is quite an age.
His wife of 28 years....
Doohan became a father again at the age of 80, when his wife Wende gave birth to daughter Sarah.
*whistles impressed*

I'm sad to hear this, but he'd been going for quite a while :(

"He's dead, Captain."
It's a shame, he was one of the greatest actors of our time. :(
and he's finally fulfilled his mission: to boldy go where no man has gone before.
rest in peace, scotty.

You don't think that's a bit of an exaggeration?
-
that's in my opinion.

Rest in peace. :(

That makes no sense whatsoever.

simple, he was onna the few of the main ST cast to actually retire gracefully. (at least as far as i know)
-
Tis sad :(
Hope he's beamed to a better place.

Oh? Did I hurt your feelings? You (or anybody else for that matter, it's not personal, you just happened to open your mouth) don't even care in reality, maybe he's been having a ****ty life for the twenty last years (being ill and ****), and you start feeling sorry because a news told you he just passed away? You damn hypocrite :doubt:
-
He was a nice guy that one. Probably the nicest of the TOS bunch.
-
Nico, it's extremely low brow to crack wise about the dead when you're talking about their passing.
-
It's also usually the best time; they can't hear you.........
-
I heard on the radio that his ashes are going to be launched into space. Sounds like a fitting end for Scotty.

What in the name of Christ are you talking about? I was simply rather preplexed that someone would refer to James Doohan as "one of the great actors of our time", so I asked about it. Oh, and "Postcount++, eh?" for your taking the time to issue such an absurdly arbitrary reprimand.
-
*waits for thread to close* This shouldn't take long..
-
Goddamn! :(
Rest in peace Scotty. :(

@ Redsniper: now that's fitting for him.

I think you all need to take a breather, cobra's idea of 'one of the greatest actors of our time' might be a bit weird but there's no need to push it.
That goes for you too cobra, being petulant does not make you more agreeable with people.

-
damn straight! :D
-
You guys are really idiots sometimes.
-
It's the same few every time that can turn even a man's passing into some joke/*****-slap fest.
Anyway...it's sad to see him go - he'll be missed :(
-
About what Cobra said, he was indeed a great actor of our time. He may not have done much, but when he did it, he did it flawlessly. The character he created was not only consistant, but it was also believeable... Which ironicly is one aspect that most "great actors" do not have.
-
All the great actors are nearly gone... it makes me sad.
Second star on the right... straight on till morning.
RIP Montgomery Scott, badass WWII hero and incredible actor

Sooooo, for a little while, there were people born who could act really well, then they all died? Earth must have passed through an anomaly. :doubt:
Well, if Scotty were here, he could pilot us back to it.
-
R.I.P.

IIRC, yes, and I remember hearing/reading somewhere that they always had to film scenes with him carefully, as he lost a finger on one hand.

Yeah..yeah, pretty much. Let me see.. todays best actor... is probably Viggo Mortensen. I guess I like him 1. because he really is a good actor, and 2. isn't taken in by the whole Hollywood ****.
And yes, good old Jimmy Doohan lost his right middle finger on Juno Beach on D-Day. That in itself doesn't make him a hero, however; he performed some rather impressive heroics.. I think he stormed something like 6 MG nests in a day.
-
might have been here.
Doohan's wartime experiences were every bit as hair-raising as his fictional fights with the Klingons.
As a captain in the Royal Canadian Artillery Regiment, he lost a finger on the first morning of the D-Day landings in Normandy.
He then saw a tank, which was carrying his substantial winnings from a cross-Channel card school, blown to pieces before his eyes.
Besides this, his aerobatic exploits, which included nearly crashing his aircraft in Holland while taking "a look" at a German U-boat, earned him the title of "the craziest pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force".
After the war, Doohan spent two years studying acting at New York City's Neighborhood Playhouse, where he later taught.
[EDIT] @ Ghost: yeah, no wonder. he lost his finger either from the continuous mortar/aerial bombings or the massive bunker fire. (which made Juno Beach the bloodiest encounter on that day, i might add)

Probably was making a rude gesture at a German bunker...

As StarTrek.com so appropriately said, "Here's to ya, lad." RIP to the best engineer Starfleet ever had :(

"Here's a present for ya laddies! *Gives the finger* *finger gets shot of by a .50* OW! Son of a *****!"
lame i know, but i couldn't help myself. :p

Actually, the guy took 6 machine gun bullets including one to the chest (which was stopped by his silver cigarette case).
I wouldn't want to have been at Normandy during D-Day. Storming an entrenched enemy from the water wasn't a stroke of genius.
-
but it was the only way to do it. the Germans had AA bunkers all over the place, so Roosevelt took a gamble and stormed Normandy the old-fashioned way.
Kudos to Jimmy for getting through that hell-hole.
-
Hey, at least he wasn't an American Marine on Iwo Jima. Christ, those guys died left and right.
even though Marines are better than anyone else
-
-
Now I'm not up to scratch with the particulars of the Normandy invasion but couldn't the allies just have shelled the beach from a boat, created an opening, and vastly increased the survival rate?

-
I think they did, but it wasn't effective against the bunkers. Juno beach had 1 and ahlaf hours bombardment from artillery (and tanks;' sitting on the decks of the ships), battleship barrages as well as bomber raids in the months preceeding; but this only destroyed 14% of the actual bunkers.
Obviously a super-concentrated attack over a long period of time would have alerted the Germans, as well.
