I'm leaving sunday for 4 week in England, with my parents and little brother. I'm not totally sure when I'll get back, and I doubt I'll be online before leaving.
Try not to kill eachother while I'm away.
-
whereabouts in England ? :D
-

How so? Anything specific to be aware of?
Semi-OT: Has anyone here any experience with UK customs since about a week ago? Any longer-then-normal waits?
-
Bah. Those soft southerns can't stand a bit of rain once in a while. :p
-
It's not the rain we can't stand. It's the not having a job or prospects :p
-
But you don't mind doing without afordable housing though huh ? :p
-
It's bloody gorgeous weather up here. And no hosepipe bans, either.

With no job you won't be able to afford food let alone housing :p

And who rattled your cage? :p

We're proper north.
-
You're also, as you're so fond of reminding everyone, not part of England :p
-
Which is why we're better.
-
I'm seeing if I can go for a camping/hiking trip to Scotland on me own or with a few friends. No plans yet, just my own vague idea.

Oh. So you do want in despite the fact you could have backed out gracefully. Okay. Gloves are off scot boy! :p
I'd love to know what you're better at. It's certainly not your national sport. In fact it's not any bloody sport. :p
-
Scotlands nice place to do that in, if you still want contact with civilisation, head for the Lochs, Ness and Lamond, but if you are really wanting to get away from it all, head for the highlands, but be aware, there are wolves in the highlands, not that I ever recall a human ever being attacked by them, by the howl is creepy ;)
-
This discussing is going to be quite interesting to watch.
Carry on, gentlemen.
(Don't forget to mention that the English are better at beating up pubs during football games.)
-
<---- Has glaswiegan partner. Steps firmly backward ;)

[Homer Simpson] Don't make me come down there!! [/Homer Simpson]
Hey southern boy, don't forget where the industrial revolution began. Without it you'd be out workin' th' fields and living in a dinky stone hut (not that there any affordable huts down there like).
:p

We are better at;
Curling.
Not being bombed by the IRA or various nutters. Except Germany.
Watching the world cup without false expectations (or mentioning 1966 every 25 seconds in a match between Argentina and Brazil in Shalke).
Tennis (now. hah!)
Humility in the face of defeat (or, god forbid, actually winning something).
Penalty shootouts.
Not needing a national TV news item to complain of minor inconveniences like rain, sun or week long power cuts.
Giving free elderly healthcare.
Intimidating tourists whilst still calling them 'pal'.
Not having (as many) tabloids.
Providing affordable university education (and having more university graduates per head than any other european country).
Not rioting at major sporting events(specifically football ones).
Golf
Wearing kilts and having hairy knees
Playing the bagpipes
Having a national dance / costume (vs Morris Dancers)
Raining (and the not having drought or moaning part)
Representative democracy/voting
Banning smoking
(Homeless) Football
Having me living here
Being north

:p
Come down any time you want. Bring the family. Show them what sunlight looks like. :p
And for your information without the industrial revolution I'd be living it up somewhere in Persia! Look at that. I'd still know what the sun looks like at least :p

Family moved down south (Sussex).
They moved back up.
Funny, that.
:p

Watching the world cup without false expectations (or mentioning 1966 every 25 seconds in a match between Argentina and Brazil in Shalke). Hard to expect to win or to brag about it when you never have. I'm sure Moldova has similar humility about their World Cup victories
Tennis (now. hah!) One player getting lucky in one competition doesn't exactly make you better.
Humility in the face of defeat (or, god forbid, actually winning something). Maybe if we had some more practice at defeat we might get better at it too. I know we're a long way behind the Scots on that score. Maybe we should try playing sports while hopping or something so that we can catch up with you.
Penalty shootouts. The Scottish football team haven't ever managed to make it 120 minutes without losing the game so it's hard to tell
Not needing a national TV news item to complain of minor inconveniences like rain, sun or week long power cuts.
Giving free elderly healthcare. Only cause you've got so few of them. If we wiped out a few more of them with heart attacks we'd be able to afford it too
Intimidating tourists whilst still calling them 'pal'.
Not having (as many) tabloids.
Providing affordable university education (and having more university graduates per head than any other european country).Only by getting your scottish Labour MPs to sabotage our system with tuition fees.
Not rioting at major sporting events(specifically football ones).Try standing in a Celtic Stand wearing rangers colours
Golf
Wearing kilts and having hairy kneesEnglish men feel no need to wear skirts.
Playing the bagpipes A weapon which will no doubt be banned under the next Geneva convention.
Having a national dance / costume (vs Morris Dancers)
Raining (and the not having drought or moaning part)In fact so much better at it that you never actually see the sun.
Representative democracy/votingCause the english got sick of you moaning about it and decided to let you have your own parliment to overspend in.
Banning smoking Only cause they kept passing out cause it's so cold they didn't know when they'd stopped exhaling
(Homeless) Football
Having me living hereI'll give you that one. And the the whole of England want to thank the whole of Scotland for having to suffer through it.

Couldn't deal with all that sunlight I expect.

Providing affordable university education
Define "affordable". How much does it cost (for a resident and non-resident) to go to a Scottish university? I'm just curious.
-
Bah. Aus > UK. And I'm not even an ozzie.

For a resident; nothing in terms of tuition fees ( the executive picks up the £1k ish per year fees for Scottish students). Scottish undergrad degree courses are longer; BSc is 3 years plus a 4th to do honours, England in Wales is 3 years hons. I think most Commonwealth unis follow a similar length to Scotland, not sure).
Student loans are payable back when earning over £10k (may be 16) pa, I think.
Postgrad varies. It gets pretty expensive for foreigners to do an MSc, I think.
EDIT; I was on a train today, from Glasgow to Edinburgh. All the way, nice sunny day, going past lots of bright fields, rivers, lochs, etc. Last time I want from any airport near London to the city centre, it was past some fairly dull muddy fields. So i prefer it here. We've never had a hosepipe ban or water shortage, either. So you can keep your droughts down south.
EDIT2; I'll find a camera tomorrow and take a piccy out of my back window, 10 minutes from the city centre. It should explain why I love living here. In all seriousness.

And I enjoy being able to leave the house and watch TV in winter so you can keep your blizzards and power cuts up north.
-
I've not had snow - any lying snow - in about 4 years. Or a power cut for 3 or so, although we did have a week long one in about 98 or so, thanks to the English*.
*Big gale force storm across the UK; they brought in engineers from the English regions to help restore, but they somehow managed to miss our local supply - whilst the power company was giving a portable generator to the nearest local pub but not to the old folks home 2 minutes down the road. Understandable, really, but I can't be missing out any more petty digs

But... That sucks ~~
-
Haven't had a hosepipe ban in over 10 years.
-
I'm surprised somewhat; the southern regions seem to have it frequently (especially Sussex).
EDIT; I would, incidentally, bloody love a good blizzard this winter; I live next to a huge hill.........
-
Well that's Sussux. I believe they've got one now. Their own fault for not having reservoirs really.
-
My brother was born in Sussex. He's never lived it down.
-
Sussex is just meh - Surrey on the other hand is cool:
H G Wells was born in Surrey
They have this in Woking where he was born:

-
Now that is cool.
kasperl: Come to Wales! Go to Snowdonia (national park in the north - kickass mountains, and you'll probably hear some spoken Welsh as well), and the Gower peninsula (national park in the south - fantastic beaches). Also, the Brecon Beacons national park is beautiful. Mountains and dams and forests and reservoirs (where the English get all their water from, incidentally :p) and stuff. And Pembrokeshire (extreme west) - the coastline is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and it's stunning.

I want a real sledge, none of this pishy plastic disc nonsense...
-
I had a toboggan (old wooden sled; fast as **** off a shovel). My brother burnt it as a fire one night when he was drunk. I'm still pissed off about it.
-
Build a new one and steal parts from his car during the construction - that'll learn him.
