And it is... WindowsVista. //www.betanews.com/article/Longhorn_Gets_a_Name_Windows_Vista/1122002477]link

I think it's a dumb name.
-
Signed and sealed.
-
longhorn was so much better....
-
it beats "millenium", though. and bob.

I'd rather see Windows: 'We've spent this whole time bug-fixing, rather than adding more resource-hogging crap to "help" you, so that now you can have a decent OS that doesn't crash all the time and whine about everything' Edition
-
Hmmm Linux sounds better IMHO. ;7
TCPA = time to switch to Linux.
-
I prefered Longhorn too, but I don't care, it's just a name.
-
Is 'vista' Spanish? What does it mean?
Hasta la Windows vista. :p
-
are there any screenshots to show what it looks like? (assuming it doesn't look like xp)

Me too. But at least it means something. XP is just two letters.Originally posted by MicroPsycho

The article had a "preview video", but the operating system itself was conspicuously absent. :p
-
Everyone will switch back to the old pre-XP layout as they do now anyway.
-
I thought the joke about the merging of the windows platforms was excellent. :)
Windows CE, ME and NT.

-
 Where did you see that? That's great!
-
Someone needs a new marketing department.
-
:wtf: Is this a joke?
-
well, this is gonna last long. NOT.
seriously, we don't need this. i'm quite partial to my XP as it is. :p
-
I'm more partial to 2000.
Then again XP was simply windows 2k with more bells and whistles attached to it. :p

You don't really get a choice. You can run linux on whatever platform you like and add new features as modules. Microsoft on the other hand designs its OSes so that you have to upgrade at a certain point.

i'm wanting linux right now, but i'm not paying $300 for a new OS. :nervous:

Eh? Linux is free.

-
oh. where can i get it, then? :D
-
Google.
-
ah yes, our mystical answer to all our problems.
-
I'll point you to Ubuntu (www.ubuntulinux.org/) for now, it's got a big following due to its ease of use.
I'd warn you though that linux is not for everyone. You'll need to do no small amount of reading to truely get to grips with it and then there's the games issue. FS2 runs on it in any case thanks to taylor and the magical folk at the SCP.

Maybe if you actually did a little searching when people suggest it you might realise why.

which i have, and i've been directed to www.linux.org. :p

Linux.org is an excellent site that gives a lot of information about linux distros and linux in general.
You'd do well to read through it.

If you actually buy the next version of windows, then that is what you would pay.

Wow, twice in one thread. I'm scared that this is going to be the new nerd joke for the next few months :shaking:

InfiniDim?
"We spent millions on that name, Prefect. Start liking it or start packing."
Ford shrugged. He had nothing to pack.

An excellent point.
-
I'd be more excited to see more games for Linux, or better Windows emulators for Linux, or better 64-bit support for Linux.
If it continues in the direction of XP, heh.
-
You can actually buy Windows?
Oh, and stupid side-story; http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/07/22/microsoft_spyware_vb6/
-
meh, dumb names aside I'll still give it a shot. It's not like I'll actually be paying for it or anything... :nervous:
-
i remember hearing its specs say at least 1 gig minimum... that means i should start investing in 1gig ram sticks soon
-
I've been thinking about upgrading pretty soon anyway. or maybe I'll just buy a powarbook...
but xp runs smooth on 256mb ram. :)

:wtf: I just got 1 gig of RAM, for things like HL2, BF2, and fs2_open.
And you're telling me I need it to run Windows minimally? :wtf:
-
I doubt it. MS typically have low minimum memory requirements for their OSs. So low one might even think that they were making it up.
Who in their right mind would run Windows 2000 DataCenter on 128Mb of RAM for instance?
-
I've seen XP machines run on early P2s with 128 MB of RAM. Granted they were extremely slow........
And I remember VB6. It was the first programming language I learned. Granted I didn't learn a whole lot and I forgot all of it. :p

Drop that down to 64 mb of ram and a 300 something mhz p2, thats what some of the teacher workstations at my school run. Most student ones are p4's with 512mb of RAM.:p

Windows "Vista" supposadly will require hardware acceleration - JUST TO RUN THE DESKTOP. You know why? Because they're adding tons of useless crap, like windows that flutter in a virtual breeze when you click them, 3D icons, etc.
-
and just how many PCs running XP these days have no hardware acceleration capability whatsoever?
-
Yeah, I'd rather not have all my hardware acceleration being used to draw a directory I've got open. :wtf:
-
What else would it be being used for in that situation?
-
Does the Windows Classic theme really make that much of a difference in speed over the default XP themes?
-
Jaguar, Panther, and Tiger are much cooler names....
And desktop hardware acceleration is years old, in some circles...:p

I have no problem with hardware acceleration being utilized, it's when it's necessary to keep a decent framerate in Windows, with no apparent major UI improvements, that's what I don't like.
-
Ah well, everyone will be able to ditch Windows soon anyway. When Apple switch to Intel next year, there will be a whole new version of OS X for everyone to enjoy.
No more viruses or security worries, it's the way forward...
-
The hardware-accelerated features of Windows Vista are completely optional. MS isn't that stupid, you know. At the low end of display greebles, WinVis (?) won't require any more graphics power than XP or 2k, from what I understand.
-
I honestly doubt that anything at the low end of being able to run Longhorn/Vista/whatever would not have some kind of hardware graphics accelerator...

Sex Panther - it smells like gasoline.
Yeah, X11 (Linux gui daemon) has had the facility to use accelleration for some time now. It's a bit flakey due to non-open drivers though.

-
That's not the fault of the non-open drivers but rather the lack of overall stability in Linux development.

Heheh you really have beef with the linux devs. :D
UPDATE: It seems Microsoft may have to rethink this: Link (seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2002397450_microvista23.html)

-
It's flakey 'cause ATM it's more of a hack extension on top of X11.
XGL (http://lists.freedesktop.org/pipermail/xorg/2004-November/004358.html) should provide for decent acceleration on X11.
-
The last major release, XP, went on sale in October 2001.
Holy cow! I never realised XP was that old!
And I hope they get sued over 'Vista' that would make my day ;)
-
Ugh, I didn't think about Google searches. I can only imagine the crap you'll have to go through if you run into a problem, and the solution isn't on an ultra-popular site. :p
