Title: A little help here!
Post by: Boomer on July 22, 2005, 01:25:48 pm
Does anyone know where one could get a .max converter from?  I don't care what it converts to, I can eventually convert every other file format to something usable for me except  .max:hopping:

I recently recieved a whole ****load of .max files and its f****** driving me crazy because I can't do **** with them!:hopping: :hopping: :hopping: :hopping: :hopping: :hopping: :hopping: :hopping:

[edit] sorry, I took my anger out on the mouse.[\edit]

I have LOTS of file format converters etc. and I have NEVER found anything that successfully converted, or even claimed to convert files of .max type to anything else without access to Max itself.  I don't believe there is any such out there.

I would go back to whoever gave you them and ask them to convert the things over to 3DS.

Check out the 3D Exploration link in my downloads section. With it you can convert to whichever format you want to.

Interesting.... so when I got Deep Exploration... it was actually LESS useful in this respect than the older version... ain't that wierd!

3D exploration is shareware. You have to buy Deep Exploration IIRC.

The later versions were 'expiring' shareware. That was the main reason I upgraded. Deep Exploration does a much better job of file onversion generally, and produces a lot fewer 'issues' with UV mapping. To open .max files with it, though, you actually need a fully functioning version of Max. It uses it to open and display the objects.

From what I remember, 3D Explorer would open objects, but could not handle the more complex elements. Multipart objects tended to end up all jumbled together

That wouldn't surprise me. Convertion programs are merely a stop gap for if you don't have something that can handle the file natively
