How hard would it be to get laser turrets to do muzzle flashes, they don't now, and i was wondering if this might be implemented.
-
Why would laser turrets *need* muzzle flashes?
-
Because they're 'laser' turrets, and it'd help cover the divergent bolt thing. It looks really silly when a bolt emerges 45 degrees off the way the barrel is pointing... :)

uh, they're right, lasers don't emit "flashes" at all.. a muzzle flash is consistant with chemically driven weapons (i.e a cannon) with the hot gasses escaping the barrel after the projectile leaves it.
plasma might emit some residual plasma that escapes the containment of the plasma shot.
-
They ain't lasers. But hey, thanks for the Laser Physics 101. Shame it's a red herring, since they ain't ****ing lasers. Hence 'lasers'. Christ.
They ain't plasma either. Fartguns will never be practical.
Who cares what they are - but the muzzleflashes would need some work, as I dimly recall watching flak flashes point along the line of fire, and not the way the barrel is pointing, which looks retarded. I wonder why the turrets seem to align AFTER firing instead of before: I guess it's a turret AI thing.

Afaik muzzle flashes worked for all ships once, but it was disable, cause it looks bad.
They didn't move with the ship, but stood where the laser was shot.
-
it was disabled because the flash never moved from the place it was made. On a ship moving quickly, the ship would fly past the flash. !=good.
-
If we can have glowpoints moving with rotating parts, shouldn't it be possible to have muzzle flashes moving with the ship ?
-
I dont understand how a muzzle flash not moving with a ship is bad, like when you fire a rifle and then turn it 90 degrees you expect the ball of flame to not move, but to stay where it is.
-
Yeah, but if you were moving at 60 km/h, you would expect the flare to move at 60 km/h, not remain stationary and fly through you. :p
-
ah, i see...
Still, why remove them entirely, short-lived flares on slow-moving ships would be entirely plausible, it should be upt to the modder to determine if the bug is noticable or not, flak turrets have no problem.
-
Is this a similar issue to the 'green frisbee' trail that Proms create now? The impact has the 'glowing green circle' (which I don't like even conceptually, but anyway), but it doesn't move with the ship, so it looks awful.

...yet you support the idea of "muzzle flashes" on a technology that wouldn't even have them?

I hate that FS2 names turrets as "Beam turret", "Laser turret" and "Missile turret". There's just no variation for mods and total conversions, in many cases these descriptions are totally wrong as to what kind of weapon the turret in question actually got.
Suggestion: Make default names either "Primary turret" or "Secondary turret" and make it possible to define each turret's name in tables.
And TBP would also like to utilize muzzleflashes in other weapons than just flak types.
1. Don't get stuck on FS2 universe.
2. Reality does not have anything to do with arcade space shooters.

Christ. They're NOT LASERS. I mean, honestly: any 8 year old can look at them and see they're not lasers. So... why shouldn't they have muzzle flashes again? Do YOU know what they are? Of course you ****ing don't. I'd love to let you make a fool of yourself some more, but the adults are talking now.
Is the beam/laser/missile thing hardcoded? I mean, is it actually impossible to have the game display 'funkotron' or 'daffodil' or '80TeV PB' when you target turrets?
-
You're campaigning for yet another completely and utterly pointless graphical update and you're calling me childish?

Think that's quite enough of that.
Muzzle flashes have been requested several times. If a coder wants to do them he'll have had his memory jogged by the thread already.
