So yea....I'm wondering what everyone thinks the most difficult/annoying/fun enemy to fight is.....
Im gonna go ahead and say for me its the Ulysses fighter, since i can never seem to hit it with my guns or missiles, and the Deimos Corvette, due to its massive village pillaging abilities (want to attack it in a blind spot?! have fun getting rammed and randomly hit by beams as you charge it head on:lol: )
yea...so those 2 are fun opponents. Anyone else have an opinion they want to share?
-
50 Sekhmets armed with Morningstar - tornadoes vs. You in ten respawns. On insane of course.
Not as hard as it is fun.
-
Most annoying? Anything with a Morning Star.
Most fun? Cargo containers.
-
Six Dragons vs. me in a Myrmidon or Herc 2 with no respawns. I lose this even on Medium. :(
-
Mara. They're so easy to pwn. Although I am probably going to get tonguelashed for that.
-
On the fun side, me in a Herc with quad Prometheus vs. as many Basilisks as you can throw at me. Endless target practice. :)
On the not side, me in a Serapis vs. just about any capital ship. Those things have paper-thin hulls. :p
-
SF DRAGONS!!!
-
Hate: Dragons
Love: SF Basilisk, GTF Hercules.
-
Hate: (If I may be so freely) The Minbari fighter from TBP
Dragons
Love: Any bombers :P
Raiders from TBP
Hercules
-
love: hercs, freiters, you in multi ;)(i cant remember how to spell anything these days
hate: SERAPHIM BOMBERS!!!! and aolis class corvets...they rip me to peices every time.
oh, and dragons arnt that bad you know, yea they are a little more of a challenge but just let them fire a thing of missles at ya, instantly dodnge and countermeasure then slow down turn and there they are for you to blast to hell...works everytime...just tricky with 30 of them...but 20 is ok
-
go into fred. make as many meson bombs as you please, set the big bang, and their hull down real low.. think dominoes..
-
hahahahahahahaha.
ok, that made me laugh a little, but try sending in as many colossus' and santhanas' as you can on low hull making them all converge on the same point....think...thats funny they just hit each other...then think..domino (put some low hull mesons here and there to add a better effect)
-
A fleet of Sathanas!
-
Love: Basilisks
Hate: Dragons, bombs (I always hit them and get bounced around by the shockwave :D)
-
Love: Dragons, Horus, Thoth, any other light fighter.
Hate: any bomber with a turret, bombs.

 Indeed annoying. Nothing's more irritating on an escort mission than having to readjust yourself after being tossed around like that. Takes too much time away from, say, killing the actual bombers.
-
I like hunting slower fighters and bombers without turrets. It's fun that you can take them down so easily. Even if they turn on you, you can survive. I love hunting warships which have no flaks or anti-fighter beams. Trying to avoid their turret blasts has a special feeling.
I hate hunting Dragons and Ulysses fighters. Any larger fighters are not a problem. Hunting for example a Perseus is fun, if you don't have anyone on your back and no-one wants to take your kill.
I also hate attacking anything which has flak guns. Flaks are the worst weapons in the terms of gameplay in gaming history.
-
fighting ulysses is a love/hate relation for me, fun to chase, but annoying when you want them dead
dragons are just a pain in the ass
surgical strikes on rakshasas are fun
-
Dragons are a nice challenge, though if there are lots of them you're in trouble. Shooting up cruisers with Tempests while dodging flak and AAA is fun as well (works best with an Aeolus)
One thing I really didn't like was the penultimate mission of FS1, where you launch from the Bastion to chase down the Lucifer. A HoL destroyer jumps in across your path, and launches a load of Thoths with Flails that push you miles back the way you came before you can kill 'em all. Irritating in the extreme. Getting bounced around between several AAA beams without being able to escape is a pain. And the tail AAA on a Lilith cruiser is possibly the most annoying thing ever, especially when trying to kill it with a fighter.
-
Bah, dragons are easy, kinetic weapon + rockeye = lots of dead dragons:lol:
Yea i gotta agree with the bombs being annoying....i always end up missing the last bomb cuz of shockwaves and instead strafing the ship im trying to protect..

I loved that mission, actually; because I just floored it and ducked round the thing and didn't get hit (or fight), it felt like a proper last-minute dash through a ****storm of fire.

Nope. The quarter-AAA on that Terran Cruiser (was it Fenris or Leviathan?) are far more annoying.
And I like dogfighting with Maras and (like TopAce said) evading turret bolts.
-
SB Vindacyl (or however the hell you spell it). Sadistic modders...
If it's big and I have a bomber, I'm good.
-
Fun: Becoming Road kill by that Sathanas, after hearing Command say those fatefull words, and getting your butt scared off.
Not Fun: Getting run over by some other Destroyer when about to complete a mission.
Not Fun at all: Same as above, except with the destroyer you are suposed to protect as it jumps out to complete your Primary Objective.
-
Chasing Manticores can be really annoying. They have ways of moving a lot faster than whatever you're flying. If a Horus has problems keeping up with it, then it must really be fast.
I also find chasing Ulysses fighters annoying to chase along with dragons. Damn low profile fighters......
I love to wipe out waves of Basilisks and Aeshmas. They are slow and easy targets.
-
The key to beating Shivan fighters relatively easily is to deliver the most damage when its shields are almost down. If you only manage to damage it down to ~ 70%, it starts moving like hell and you really have to spend some more time to kill it. But if you deliver the fatal blow when its hull is at 100%, you won.
It's generally true to all AI pilots. Since Shivan fighters have weak hull, this trick can be used.

Been flying lightys training thing again lately then? How many counter measures did you end up using? lol ;)
-
Maras suckorz.
Dragons are the trickiest little buggers out there!
-
Dragons are tricky in FS1.......not FS2 though.
-
picking off fighters with one or two well placed shots (can't stand earlier missions where you're hacking away for ages)

Ah, I forgot about Aeshmas. They make even Basilisks seem good. :p Honestly, I'm not sure what the Shivans would think a wing of Aeshmas could accomplish, other than getting blow to bits seconds after jumping in.
-
Love: Ashema's
Hate: Lilith's (hey, on medium, don't even think about attacking one...) ...
-
Maybe their refit target drones? Or just bad Shivans that don't "Work and play well with others?" :P
-
Love: Basilisks, bombers of any class.
HATE: Manticores and Dragons.
Especially when I have to fly against them while I am in a Herc Mk2.

Yes, that ship needs two additional primaries.

this is so true, i almost forgot about that.
oh, and liliths arent that hard...hell, they must be harder on medium then on insane, because on insane i can fly right past them and not even take any damage.
i find that AAA beams are the most annoying weapon out there...and in the mission where you have to scan the sathanas subsystems...on insane, you will 90% of the time get hit by one of these beams....best way to no get hit is to stay as close to the sath as you can...as i always say about any warship in FS2..the closer you are, the safer you are (i mean within 50m of course)

Haven't played much during the last year(s). :( Only recently played the gauntlets a bit, and there're no Dragons in there.:( :( So I kinda lost the feel for them. Will possibly do a bit about that soon.

On the contrary: I find that the Herc II is the best fighter to go up against a Manticore or a Dragon with. The thing can carry two primary weapons with awesome energy reserves and has a huge secondary bay. Load it up with Harpoons and Tornadoes, and then you've got a lot of dead Shivan fighters.
-
Nah, I rely mainly on my primaries. That's why I don't really like the Herc II. Mark I is okay, but my choice is any of the Perseus, Ulysses or the Loki.
-
:wtf: The Ulysseys and Perseus both have 4 primary points too... They only have manuverability and speed over the HercII, but are both more limited in weapons compatability (ignoring secondaries, as they are irrelevant in this case)...
-
I'm a primary weapons man:yes: , so...
Erinyes for the win.
8 gun banks of whatever you feel like, and enough room for trebuchets in case you're far away
the key to dragons is to kill them quickly, you only get a few shots off at them before they disappear behind you. Even harpoons take too long to lock on, so you gotta double rockeye them or artillery them with something like a kaiser or prom s from lots of mounts.
anyone else hate the circe and think its a waste of a primary? I keep trying the obvious circe + maxim combo and it fails miserably every time...
Aeshemas are the shortbuses of the Shivan fleet.
-
If your using circie+maxim dont fire link them, circe bolts move relatively slow whereas maxim shots move very fast, you have to circie them then sitch to maxim.
Still, this is kinda annoying to have to do so i use kaysers.

Primaries > Secondaries
Agility > Firepower
Primaries are related to firepower.
Neither Hercs has anything that can be called maneuveribility, so I have to rely on my primaries while flying Hercs. If I have the choice to, I change firepower to agility.

I don't hate it, I simply never use it. Talking about combos, I somehow find the Prometheus S + Kayser more convenient than double Kaysers. Probably because it devours less energy and is still almost as effective as double Kaysers.

I have to try the Circe + Prometheus S/Kayser combo next time.
-
I stick with double Prometheus S, to be honest. Almost as effective as kaysers, uses far less power, and much longer range.

And saccrifice hull strength in doing so.
Although your rankings for primary and secondary, and agility to firepower are strictly your opinion. I prefer the ships that are a bit harder to maneuver, but have that extra punch. If the extra burst of speed is what you're looking for, get a Seth. Someone gets on your tail, hit the burners, and lose them.
-
Seths are harder to destroy because of its small size. If it were only a bit bigger, it would be almost as useless as any heavy attack fighters in dogfights.
-
Not so.
-
I tried the Circe + Prometheus S combo. Not good. I had to switch to Prometheus S only if I wanted to deal a good amount of damage. This combo is probably good with the Ares or the Erinyes, I found the energy demands for this combo quite ideal on a Herc II.
-
Love: Maras. Especially when you're in one yourself. :P
Hate: Dragons. Only ever killed 3 of them during the whole FS2 campaign. All I do is kill off the bombers and then try to run away (haha, yes :P).
-
OK, now that I got to it...
     for Dragons.
I changed the second and fourth Mara-wave of the shivan gauntlet to being Dragons and... well, it just reminded me of why I always liked flying those in my mods. :D :D :D Can't remember any other AI ship pulling off such stunts. Also it seems it was specifically this maneuver that caused me to put Morningstars aside as suicidal... :p
(Yeah, I have to admit I didn't play MP often. :( As soon as I get my old PC to running FS again, this'll change, though!)
-
i like the challenge of Dragons and manticors.....together. it's a fun fight.
-
I hate fighting/trying to disable/trying to bomb/etc. Deimos and Aeolus classes the most I think..

Use maxims and trebuchets
-
@DarthWang:
What actually can carry Maxims? I haven't found anything that can mount them.
BTW, for everyone who dislikes the Circe... Poking about inside the aseffects.vp, I noticed that that weapon does no shield damage, nor has the "puncture" flag set - which (as far as I can see) means it won't do any damage at all unless teamed with something else.
Considering that the comments in the .vp specifically say it's a puncture weapon, that seems a trifle odd, imho. Assuming I read it right, that is (I have been known to make really stupid errors before ;) )
-
That may be a bug, there has been a maxim unmountable bug in the past.
Off the top of my head, the only thing that cant mount the maxim is the perseus IIRC.
-
The Serapis, Herc 2, Ares, Erinyes and oddly enough Ulysses, Loki and Herc can all mount the maxim. As can every single terran or vasudan bomber in FS2 with the exception of the Bahka. It's not like there's a lack of ships that can't do it. The Tauret is a very good example of a ship that really should be able to mount the maxim.
The Perseus on the other hand can't so Firecrack is correct there.
All comments are directed at singleplayer. Multiplayer is different.
-
Hate: Dragons, Horus (fast and thin :(), Perseus (i hate fast targets), Minbari Fighters in TBP.
Loved: Basilisk, Any Bomber, Hercules, GVC Aten.
-
OK, so I've a known bug, then. Every ship pops the "this ship can't mount that weapon" box - even ones which come with one fitted as standard. That would be sorta OK - just don't unmount them - but they won't even load ammo for the ones they have.
Since nobody else seems to be getting it, though, I assume I've broken something. Er, something else, that is - I know I broke the Vasudan HL-7  Looks like I'll be using that backup copy sooner than I hoped.
-
What media VP files have you got installed? Assuming that you are using FS2_Open of course :)
Also what version of FS2_Open are you using.
-
Yes, I'm using FS2_Open. :) Ver 3.6.7, I think is the number - filename is "fs2_open_G-20050722.exe". (I have the original disks, actually, but it does want to 'play nice' with WinXP)
Dumping the directory and filtering for .vp files, I get Kara_Temporary_asEffects_Workaround.vp, mv_aseffects.vp, mv_core.vp, mv_effects.vp, mv_models.vp, mv_textures.vp, Root_fs2.vp, smarty_fs2.vp, sparky_fs2.vp, sparky_hi_fs2.vp, stu_fs2.vp, tango1_fs2.vp, tango2_fs2.vp, tango3_fs2.vp, warble_fs2.vp
3.6.5 did go in first, so there may be one or two relics in there that shouldn't be, but I didn't see any mention of removing anything.
As to breaking the Mekhu, that's entirely my fault. I 'cleaned up' the whitespace and commenting in the .tbl I extracted from the mv_aseffects.vp. Apparently, I got a bit enthusiastic with the delete key. It's fixed now. (The Maxim is still borked, otoh)
-
It looks like you're trying to use the ballist version of the maxim when your ships.tbl can't handle it.
If you're not using tables you've modified yourself. I'd probably try downloading the 3.6.6 VP files if I were you. Get rid of the temporary workaround vp along with everything beginning with mv and install those and your maxim problem should be solved.
If you have modified the tables you'll need to alter the ships table to allow the ships to carry ballistic weapons or change the maxim back to the version on :v:'s tables rather than the one you've gotten out of the media VP files.
-
I love bombing, so my favorite target would be most cruisers expecially a aeolus or a lilith (yes I die a lot). Nothing is more satisfying then spamming their turrets with EMP missles then following it up with a bomb to blowing up a couple of turrets and maybe taking out a subsystem.
-
@Karajorma:
OK, that sounds like a good plan. Where would... (checks site) ...oh. I was at that site no more than 3 days ago, and the files I listed were the ones it had. Pays to check every day, huh? ;)
Off to do some d/l'ing I go.
