Setekh did it! blame him! (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
It is pretty nice isn't it, although we're not sure if it's a little to large (file size) to remain on the boards... we'll see how it goes.

Hmmm, try reducing it to say 2/3 the dimensions. Should lower the file size and still look as cool.

1) Load up the animation in PSP7's Animation Shop.
2) File --> Optimization Wizard.
3) Make sure "Animated Gif" is selected and choose to create a new animation from the current one. Click "Next".
4) Pull the quality slider down all the way. Click "Next" twice.
5) Look at the tiny "before & after" preview. Can't see much here, so click "Next".
6) The file has been lowered in size from 291Kb to 137kb. Click "Finish".
7) Now choose View --> Animation for both the original and the new logos. Put the windows side-by-side and compare. No difference, right? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
8) Save the new animation and upload it to the server.
9) Say to Setekh "Tsk tsk" for not doing this in the first place. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)
10) Now say to Setekh "Good job" on creating the animation at all. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Or, for Adobe:
1. load image.
27. select "image size"
D. either change res. to <100 dpi (72 is plenty), or shrink to 66.6%
Nose. Save and close Adobe. Send $500 check to Stryke 9. And give him a more interesting title- I kinda like "Eats small children".

You think? I dunno... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/lol.gif)
And DragonClaw, ImageReady (at least the version that comes with Photoshop 6) can read and write animated GIF's, but it's kinda awkward.
Setekh/Thunder/whomever, If you want the optimized GIF just say the word and it'll be in the mail. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I was about to say the same...
Oh, and the Photoshop animated-GIF totally-wrong person, I think it's time to be condescending: To animate a GIF, you compile multiple GIF files. Hence, if you cange ALL the separate frames and recompile (a good 10 minutes work for 30 frames at most), the whole thing is smaller. Speak only of what you have experiernc in, and I won't haul out the Dead Frozen Goat of Justice. Do I need to explain that statement too?

Ahem (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) That flashy little logo thing is rather... old - IIRC, I did it about 5 months ago (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
I think the new Hard Light logo is not neccessary. It causes the forum pages to load slowly on computers with 56k modems or less.
Also, how many of us really notice the logo up there? Does it make a difference? I don't really spend time to stare at it anyway. I just post replies or start new threads and such.
The above statements were my opinions.

Dude...*sigh* I'm not going to turn this into a flame war or anything, so don't bother trying to get my goat. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/rolleyes.gif)
Now, everything I say/said about Photoshop is concerning version 6.0, with ImageReady 3.0 alongside it.
You are correct in a manner of speaking about what animated GIF's are made of, but there is more: they can also be onion-skinned. That means that the next frame in sequence will not be a complete picture, but only show what changed between the frames. This can shrink the filesize by a huge amount in certain files.
Note: I think that onion-skinning is the right term for this - it's also the whole keyframe thing in digital video files.
Now, about ImageReady's handling of animated GIF's. When you open an animated GIF in ImageReady, it shows all the frames as different layers, as well as some sort of list down bottom. Fine, whatever. I admit freely that the time I've spent in ImageReady is about 20 minutes total, but I couldn't figure out how to optimize the animation as a whole. It could have been made much easier. And yes, there is a nice menu item called "Optimize Animation" in the menu of that animation preview window/toolbar, but it didn't do much for me.
PSP7's Animation Shop, on the other hand, makes the whole process very simple. It can process a whole animation just like PSP itself can process a single image. Optimization, filters, everything. And, I must admit again - I've only spent 20 minutes or so in Animation Shop, too. All it needed was a click on File --> Animation Wizard. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
So to sum up:
- There definetly is power in changing an animation's frames seperately, but for what was being talked about here a general change to the animation as a whole is best.
- Don't accuse someone of talking about something that person has no experience in. When you do that not only do you come across as some sort of elite know-it-all, but by your accusations you make yourself guilty of the very thing that you accused me of.
Now, there is absolutely nothing to loose by replacing that 300Kb animation with an optimized version. So do it, please. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Like cellulos for cartoons, you mean?
-
No offence intended, dude, I just was being annoying as usual.
Yeh, but I don't use ImageReady... I have GIF Animator and a few other program that do the job quite nicely (you can get the proper equipment for anything free if you practice cheating the free-trial-version people enough (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/evil.gif) ) Problem is now that the program I have is much older than the program Setekh used to make it (everything is on this comp). But I have some newer apps that might do it on another computer, albeit awkwardly (Flash was decidedly not built for this sort of thing, but it should be able to process the newer form of GIF). We'll see what happens tomorrow.

Well, I wasn't the one to put it up...
*looks in Shrike's direction*
But I really don't mind. I'm on a 56k and naturally I visit these Forums everyday - and the GIF simply loads from the cache. I never really miss any time loading it except the first time I did, a few days back...

Um..... no. If you stop and think about it for a sec, Setekh has every right to beat with a stick, after all, you're putting your name on his work. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)
BTW, is it supposed to have a black border around it?

A tiny fraction of the size and no noticeable difference... I did a lot more work than I felt like on this one, Steak, you'd better say nice things about it...

I personally think it looks like sh*t Stryke, the color depth all screwey now.

Okay. I've tried hard to be pleasant about this one. But you are just wrong on this one.
It's 50k now. Right, given, it's smaller.
However. You have put your name on my work; you have reduced its quality; and you have these wierd white frames around the damn thing. Look: no. I'm not going to use that and you had better not take that as your work, because it's not. It would be like ... Woomeister not giving credit for converting Dark's SF Gorgon to FS2 (speaking of which, kudos to Woomeister for actually not doing that).
And apart from that, you have almost completely lost my sense of respect from you. Not only have you proven before that you won't listen to reason, you call me by a name I dislike and then expect me to act nicely to you. I'm sorry, but no. One final note:
