Did you get the tutorials with the program itself?  They're pretty comprehensive.

I use 3D Studio Max 3 at home. But I'm really the kind of person who uses it to create simple things. If you search this forum carefully, you should be able to find my thread of the simple looking Neptune-class cruiser which I entered for the Modelling Contest. Its a very simple ship, so you should know how basic my knowledge is but I'll be glad to help you in any way I can.

Don't underestimate yourself! Honestly speaking, that Neptune is a highly cool ship. Low poly count, textures are ace, and the design is very original. If that were POF-converted...  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Hahaha......really? Well, it was so poorly armed that even a wing of Perseus could take it down in less than 10 minutes. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
