Yesterday my 30gig HDD died. It was less than 6 months old and basically contained everything I had done to date and it possibly couldn't have happened at a worse time.
I lost both of my OS's, Rhinoceros 3D, 3DSmax, 750 odd mp3s and other bits and pieces of software as well as all of my IE links, my contacts list and all ICQ settings.
More importantly though and the thing that ultimately ruined the day is that I lost all of my models, any textures I was working on and a few other personal projects.
The more safety concious amongst you will ask "why didn't he back it up?" well although I do have a CDRW it's been on the blink for the last two months and a lack of funds meant I didn't have any CDRs.
I can replace all of the software eventually but I only have a 2gig drive so I can't install all of the critical stuff and obviously I can't replace the models. Fortunatley in a month or so I will be able to afford a new computer with large HDD and all the bells and whistles.
Until then I'm a bit limited in what I can do so for the time being all I can say is sorry guys and I'll try to get it together ASAP.

Well here's something to add to your day:
YOU'RE FIRED!!!
I always knew you were a slacker anyways... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Seriously dude, I am making jokes at a very difficult subject. My heart goes out to you... I cannot imagine if I lost the content of my hard drive. Let us know if there is anything we can do for you. You can start by adding me back to ICQ... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Well, I can ( and that means a lot of models, believe me). I almost cried. Bah...
I'm really sorry for you man, you can't even imagine how I mean it (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

Ouchh............. That sucks.

Yea.. I had Linux on my HD(30 gig too), and Windows or Linux wouldn't load after I installed Linux... but a boot disk would work.
I thought it was an HD prob so I formatted my HD... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/lol.gif)
It did the same thing later...and I found out the LILO bootloader wouldn't work because the harddrive needed to be a primary master... it was a secondary slave...
Heh losing all your info isn't very good at all...

Indeed, all I can say now is onwards and upwards, no point in being miffed about something I can't do anything about.
Hmmm, gotta buy a new CDRW (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Dude, I know this will sound ridiculous, but what do you have to loose? Try this: wrap up the dead HD in an anti-static bag and an air-tight bag, and stick it in the freezer. Yes, the freezer. Take it out after a half-hour, and put it back in the computer. You might be able to access data on it until it heats up again, so I'd be ready with another drive so you can copy things over.
I've heard first-hand of this working twice, but I'm not sure exactly why. I think it has to do with some sort of sealant inside the HD that expands with the heat and can cause problems. The cold makes it contract again, and enables acces to the drive for a bit (+/- 1 hour...?). Of course, if the problem with your drive doesn't have anything to do with whatever it is that contracts and expands... oh well. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)
Good luck!

I have NEVER heard of that solution before. Wierd. Even wierder if it works. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
Worth a shot, though, isn't it?

Just in case I'll describe what's happened.
1: A day or 2 ago HDD sporadically crashes and hangs the system, win2k regesters that the HDD can't be written to. After a reboot it seems to work for a while.
2: yesterday it begins to stop spinning altogether, tried setting it up as master, slave, giving it it's own IDE channel and finally running it on a different system altogether. No response and curiously if it's set up with another HDD on the same IDE channel both disks are invisible to the BIOS.

Ouch. This happened to me once, too - however I didn't lose the entire HD, but instead one partition. It was a crucial partition, though - my data disk, with 6 months worth of renders on it. So yes, lost data = high suckage value.
You seem to have tried everything that I can think of so far for what seems to be physical hard drive failure - and though I know nothing else about it, I would probably follow sandwich's suggestion (I don't see anyone else raising their hands (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)). Good luck, dude.

OK, a question: From what you can tell (by hearing, I guess), did it stop spinning because something broke or because it wasn't getting a sommand to spin? Also, I have no expertise on the internal workings of HD's, but logic says to me that the fact of it causing both disks to be invisible means that the circuitry may be screwed. Of course, that may be total nonsense... :-/

I was speaking to a friend and he confirmed my suspicions that the controller board (the PCB strapped to the HDD (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) ) is dead so if any of you guys out there happen to have a broken 30 gig fujitsu HDD with a working controller you know who to call (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Sorry about your HD. I was on vacation for a week and I just got back yesterday. If it's any consolation I've got copies of the Mars and Morrigan right here ("http://www.3dap.com/hosted/gtdwolf/mmodels.zip"). The Mars in SCN and DXF format, and the morrigan in 3DS and COB. Oh yeah, the SCN has my crappy turreting job.
-
Fantastic!! I forgot that some of you guys had copies of my models.
Hmmm, only problem now is that I have precious little space to run max or anything else. Either way I'm glad that I still have the models. Thanks Greywolf (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I also have that old wierd version of the Morrigan that you were going to change to a transport or something.
