I have a turret. It is a very nice turret. I like this turret. However, I believe it may be too heavy on the polies to be useful. In fact, it has over 1000 polies. with HT&L, can I make reqular use of this turret? Or will it go the way of the dinosaurs? =@

what's "regular"
As long as the overall ship has a decent polycount you will be ok.
-
it depends if this turret is used 15 times or once or twice. only using one map will also do a lot to keep the turret useable.
-
Yeah, you can, especially if you use Bobb's submodel LOD code.
-
Well, I ask because I'm using the turret, or a minor variation there of about 24 times and I just thought that might be a little too much for most of the communities video cards. Right there is a minimum 24000 polies, and that doesn't even include the the ship and other types of turrets.
-
Yeah, that's overkill
-
I guess I'll keep, the 8, I've put in but I'll have to find an alternate model for the other ones. In case you're wondering how the hell someone can have 1000 polies in a turret, its a round multi-part. Spheres=uberpolies.

I couldn't find my up to date one, so I used an older backup.
@WM: I don't know how to use Bobb's submodel LOD code.

You know, you could just use much lower-poly spheres for the turret base. It's not like you're going to be production-rendering this thing for a film or something. We can deal with a little bit of spec oddity in exchange for reasonable polycounts.

Hmmm. I'm experimenting along that angle right now. Ah, the trouble one can get into when one has no clue what one is doing.
