Title: Doom Trailer Released.. IGN Talks Balls.
Post by: Fineus on July 28, 2005, 01:10:44 pm
Firstly, the Doom movie trailer has been released. You can find it here:

http://filmforce.ign.com/articles/636/636398p1.html

Secondly, the IGN article that covers it is talking a load of rubbish.

Now for my take down of the trailer. If any of this spoils anything for you - scold yourself for reading past this sentence.

This film looks terrible.

Normally I wouldn't say that - because I'm quite a sucker for visual treats, action and horror films. I'm also a fan of Doom - so you'd think I'd be pleased with whatever they spat out. Think again.

Having watched the trailer, my first impression was "dear god, it's Resident Evil Redux". This impression isn't undesereved. Research in a secluded science base goes awry (on Mars, at least they got that right..) - a good start to the similarities. But is this research into unknown artifacts or strange devices buried on the planets surface... or is it research into dimensional travel etc.? No. It's research into the human genome. That's right boys and girls - you can see where this is going now. Like Resident Evil - it's human beings who become the monsters!

This is of course, a load of crap. However it's there in the trailer for all to see.

What ensues is what looks to be a direct copy of Resident Evils layout. Swap zombies for imps and The Umbrella Corps for UAC and you've more or less got the film wrapped up right there.

The people making this thing should be shot.

Or hopefully I'm wrong. The trailer is lying and everything will be fine. But right now it looks like they've taken an excellent concept with tonnes of potential - and raped it of everything good and pure.

Ah well, back to playing the game.

It looks godawful. But then there hasn't been a good game --> movie conversion done, to be honest.

Tomb Raider actually wasn't that bad.

The only redeeming feature of Tomb Raider was Angelina Jolies' enlarged tits.  And even they were unconvincing.

Whose idea was it to take a game that barely had a plot to begin with and turn it into a movie?  Come on...  A 320x240 screen worth of text, followed by thirty-some, key-hunting kill-fests and another screen of text does not a movie make.  The only reason anybody can take that kind of gameplay for hours at a time is because they have direct control over the protagonist's actions.  An hour and a half to three hours in a theater, just watching, with no control over the action would be utterly unbearable.

Oh, that's even if they had decided to remain true to the game.  Instead, as Kalfireth mentioned, they couldn't even stay true to the single A10 page worth of plot material.  Seriously, let's take a look at the condensed version...

Doom 1...
Marine goes to a base on Mars.  Fiendish beings attack Marine.  Marine kills ****, while working ever-deeper into the base.  Marine goes to hell.  Marine doesn't like hell too much, so he starts killing off the inhabitants.  Marine returns from his jaunt into the underworld.  Hoo-****ing-ray.

Doom 2...
Fiends in hell don't much care for hell.  Fiends come to Earth.  Marine kills more fiends on Earth.  Hell is driven back to hell, so to speak.

Doom 3...
Marine wonders why the hell people still pay for this rehashed ****-in-a-box.  Marine probably kills some more fiends, but really, who cares anymore?

Now, who's the screenwriter who couldn't hold true to that?  I want to string him up by his own intestines and light him on fire before he dies, and even then, I'd feel like I was being too merciful.  If you're going to make a movie-conversion of the game with the most simplistic, shallow plot EVER, then you have no excuse for "taking artistic liberty."  It wasn't art as a game, and it's sure as hell not going to be art as a movie, so there's nothing artistic to it, and when you have such a thin plot, you already have enough room to work with that you don't need to be taking any liberties!

RAWR!

What?  You don't agree?  You think Doom was a deep, involving game worthy of all the world's acolades?  Moreover, you predict this movie will rock the socks off of any movie I would dare to call "better?"  Feel free to die in a fire, so that the world may have the pleasure of hearing your screams of agony before being rid of your particular brand of stupidity entirely.

Mmmm...  Nothing like a good rant.

Ok...so it has imps and Mars. How the **** does this relate to Doom? God, even the trailer is aweful and cliche.

And Doom 3 does have potential, Blue. The writer just needs to add a layer or two of depth to it, and he has a good screenplay. This...this is ****.

Hey, just like Doom! Maybe it is being faithful after all!

The fact it doesn't appear to include the hilariously evil Dr Betruger means it's omitting the only particularly funny part of Doom - it is a comedy after all.

You're the control, and I'm the damage!

You could say that, because Bungie IS Microsoft. The fact remains that the Bungie team will oversee the development of the movie. You can bet a lot that they will not let a crap movie go forward because it would destroy the franchise.

It's ****ing RESIDENT EVIL 3. Maybe, if there's a god, they'll do the right thing and rename it that.

Human genome? WTF?

How could they screw up something so simple?

UAC works on a teleporter on mars. It opens a gate to hell. Demons come through and people turn into zombies.

Marine shows up, kills stuff for 80 minutes. Goes into hell for the final 10 minutes, closes portal.

The end.

*Goes to movie website*

*sees the writers names*

*looks up addresses*

*suits up, grabs bfg 9000 and heads out*

The weird thing is the site seems to mention sealing off a portal to earth:confused:

This movie continues to make less and less sense.

When I saw "we've deciphered the last 10% of the human genome" I thought to myself "oh ****, this movie is really going to suck".

My thoughts exactly. Doom 3 practicly laid it out for them, and yet they screwed it up.

You can bet a lot that they will not let a crap movie go forward  unless it will make them a ****load of cash, preferably appealing to the lowest common denominator in the sake of populism above integrity

Exactly.

The premise is simple enough, but they could at least have pulled a good action / horror movie out of it.

:ick: They just killed any remote chance of me seeing that piece of garbage. How can they screw up such a simple story? Oh wait, it's Hollywood. All they had to do was copy Doom 3 though.

Depends really, look at how the hellknight in Doom 3 moves. Or the Imp for that matter. Now the Imp in the movie trailer looks like it leaps all over the place in much the same way as the game version does. But the Hellknight generaly stomps around rather slowly and ponderously. It certainly shouldn't flail around like it seems to in the trailer though.

Resident Evil meets Aliens (or vice versa). Anyway, I'll probably like this movie as pure mindless entertainement. For the first time I watch it.

There is a download of the interveiw they had at comic con and they said the monsters are guys in suits. When it hits theaters I'm gonna go see it because I love Doom and have been playing it since the sharware version of the origional came out in 93. Then I'll tell you all if it is worth seeing.

I doubt it will even be worth pirating, let alone paying to see.

why can they just not copy game's storyline? There's supposed to be one hero, who saves the day and uses uber-badass futuristic weaponry, not a SWAT team weilding G36s.

but I'll prolly see it because I like Doom

there's only one way to enjoy the artistic values of doom and this is it so i dare you! click on people (http://www.doomworld.com/10years/doomcomic/comic.php)

I don't know if that counts as NWS, are alien guts NWS? My boss applauds me when I draw him some alien guts. Is it? I don't know! At least there's blood and guns and hell in this one.

Ah yes, the Doom comic.

They must've made a bet with someone to see who could write the worst comic. No one could've done such a horrible job unintentionally.

The Rock appears to be carrying a BFG behind him, and I think I saw a plasma rifle as well. I think I'd rather waste my time with Doom 3 that I never finished than pay to see this. Did Carmack have any say during production?

I could make a Doom movie easily.

All I'd need is a camcorder, a fast PC, and Doom 3.

Can you see where this is going?
Title: Doom Trailer Released.. IGN Talks Balls.
Post by: Fineus on July 31, 2005, 02:37:09 pm
Yeah, you'd sell your PC and copy of Doom 3 and buy a ticket on the first manned flight to Mars, build a massive complex out of raw materials found around the landing site and then research a gate capable of punching through the thin dimensional barrier that separates our own dimension from Hell.

Then you'd video the ensueing slaughter and send the tape off to "You've Been Framed!". Right?

I disagree, all they had to do was essentially make an awesome martial arts flick with the story element. Well, it wasn't awesome...but the soundtrack was good. ^_^ I'll bet someone could do it justice today though.

Oh wait, best? Well, I guess it's the best of the worst then IMO.
