I just had too much time on my hands and began wondering, which is better: One Giant UBERBEAM, or a collection of smaller but still kick ass beams (within the arc of the one Uberbeam.) Vote and explain if you please.
-
I prefer multiple beams over one beam. It adds to the enjoyment.
That sounded weird.
... ;P
-
It honestly depends on the situation. If I'm looking at a battle between a couple of capital ships (i.e. corvettes, cruisers, destroyers), then I'd prefer seeing multiple beams, as it adds to the adrenaline rush of the situation.
If there's a mission testing some new weapon or some new ship jumping in and showing off, then one big beam works well (i.e. Gorgon Cannon, though I know that it uses four BFGreens to simulate one gigantic beam).
-
I take the middle ground, I personally like groups of UBERBEAMS.
Although, I don't mind smaller beams either.
I just don't like those da** AAA's...
-
Several smaller beams. One beam can be easily disarmed.
-
You can't have too many beams. Multiple smaller ones is the way to go.
-
One Gigantic Überbeam with an impenetrable web of AAA beams over it would be unstoppable, apart from with Trebuchets, since Trebuchets can't be beamed down, and would destroy the AAA turrets. So, lots of smaller beams are better.
Of course, lots of Gigantic Überbeams.....

While I agree that there should never, ever, be a situation where a ship relies on a single weapon, I have to say that there is, indeed, a limit to how many beams a ship should have. Dependant upon size of the vessel. And alot of you guys completely over do it.
Ships should be balanced. Making a big, armed to the teeth capship, means it should have little to no anti fighter defenses, and should be really easy to kill on a bombing run.
-
I choose Snuffleupagus.
No, I picked lots of smaller beams... however, I would also like to say that lots of Uberbeams, a la Colossus and Sathanas, would make me even more happy.
-
I prefer option D. ZE MISSILES! ;)
-
Mmmmmmm, beam sodomy. Mmmmm.
-
Overpowerd an unblanced ships...that reminds me of my FS2 modeling beginnings.
I wonder - did everyone when they started modding try to make a UBERSHIP? LOL
No, personally, I like flexibility.
Example? My Orion MK2 It has 2 BGreens and 2 TerSlash on it's left and right flank (1BGreen and 1 TerSlash on each..) and a LRBGreen in front.
On top of that it has 6 double barreled Heavy Terran Turrets, and about 20 smaller ones.
So it's got it's bases covered. Take out the large beam - it still hasenough anti-cap firepower to brutalize the enemy or at least cripple it.
Alltough if you position an enemy destroer directly above it or behind it, it can't target it with beams (but the Huge Turrets still can do some damage)
So my answer is several smaller beams and one powerfull one.
-
Thinking about it... i must be the only person who's never completed* an Ubership. My first ship was a fighter, my first capship was a cruiser.
I don't really care about beams, to be honest. Depends on the ship; uber-beam is only plausible on something with a vast energy supply (it was a hell of a stretch justifying it on the Vasudan installation in CoW).
*I made something ****ing huge that turned up in Inferno, but never completed it.
-
Same as aldo, although I think my first capship might've been a freighter.

No... I've yet to complete one, either. Lately I make fighters. I've never made a true destroyer, and I've not finished* anything larger, either.
*I made something large that was supposed to be in AotD, but we'll see what happens there...
-
My first and only model is a torpedo-armed corvette.
Speaking of which: GRUG! Have you gotten anything done with it yet?
What I want to see is some kind of a ripple effect with beam fire, the turrets firing in sequence or somethign similar...
-
Same as aldo, i also dont belive entirely in beams, uber plasma guns and mass drivers are cool too, as are uber missile batteries.
-
I've been wanting to see an uber plasma gun for ages!
-
Personally, I'm working on reviving some of aldo's abortions. I don't do fighters. I can't map worth a petrified piece of consecrated dog feces. I can only tile.
Oh, and Mass Drivers are cool. Uberbeams are better though. More efficient too. If you have the power, you can support an uberbeam, but you have too have both power AND room inorder to support many smaller beams. One Big beam would take up less space since you don't have to have additional ducting for the increased prescence of heat.
......I have no idea what's going on. I need sleep....
-
I work for BlackWater.
Guess which one I went for.
-
being sodomized by AAA fire for the rest of eternity?
Was my choice...
-
I don't know whitch one I like more, while the Atum will have a BFVas, it is by no means a uberbeam. But, the Oblivion will have Multiple beams.:D
-
Forget beams entirely. I want a capship armed with maxims, kaysers, and trebuchets. and if that means ripping off the turrets and bolting a damned erinyes to the hull, that's fine by me.

Sigged. :D
-
Someone should make a capship like that.
Hell, maybe they could employ Bobb's animation code combined with Goober's docking code to make a ship with turrets that could double as fighterbays. :D

Commencing plasma core insertion

Heh.
Should have seen that coming...
-
Well, for the visual effect i would prefer one uberbeam which slowly loads with a characteristic *Sssssuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuüüüüüüümmmmm*(^^) and a huge beam.
But from the tactics-side more smaller, but still powerful beams are better, cause they are harder to destroy.
-
Nothing would look cooler than 8 tiny SReds, arrayed in a circle, blazing away at some distant destroyer.
It'd be like an Octahedron of Hell. ;7
-
All right, what's with this "easy to destroy" thing?
Think about what you're saying. Don't you think it would occur to the people that these devastating uberbeams would make great targets so the designers might more heavily armor and protect them than they would another turret?
*Stops, realizes he's making unfair assumptions as to the intelligence of GTVA Command*
Any NORMAL person or group would realize this weakness and harden the turret through the addition of more anti-fighter\bomber defenses around the beam. Besides, have we forgotten that we have to mount these on big ships.
Big Ships With Fighterbays?
I mean come on! And I know someone is going to bring up Trebuchets, so here's my solution to that: EMP missiles. Shuts down warheads in flight.
-
Not permanently, and you can't shoot down missiles. And a cap ship isn't going to outrun anything. :P
-
That's what energy shields on capships are for.
-
Yeah, remember Bob's (I think) Shielded Deimos? Only the turrets were shielded. And a capship could put up a powerful enough shield to keep out a couple of Trebs methinks...
In addition, remember, this turret has lots o' hitpoints. Who says that a fighter\bomber will have enough uninterrupted time to sit there and pump Treb after Treb or Bomb after Bomb into the turret without:
A) Getting thoroughly sodomized by AAA beams.
B) Getting Blasted to bits by a Fighter.
C) Getting run over a la Bearbaiting.

If this was even a bit more realistic game, I'd go ahead and say a quick lightning attack with light bombers, with focused firepower brought to bear in as short amount of time as possible, would solve every single tactical situation the GTVA command finds themselves confronting.
Althouth against a god damn Sathanas they threw a wing of Bakhas, and out of those four only the wing leader had any idea what to do, so durrrrrr.
-
One of them had a pretty good idea of what to do "Shoot the flak guns or we'll be cut to shreds!"
It's just that none of them could fly worth a damn. Or use anything more effective than an Akheton.
Besides that mission has my favorite quote, if you manage to keep your wingman alive:
"The Beleth has arrived. Command is well informed."
"Then they must know this mission is suicide!"
-
Smaller beams is the way to go. Pritty colors!
-
I think I may be misunderstood. I don't mean having one forward facing turret as opposed to multiple turrets covering all sides, I mean one big turret as opposed to several smaller ones within the space taken up by the big turret, but all facing forward.
Only an idiot would put the beam weapons on a ship so that they only covered the forward of a warship...Right?:nervous:
-
There's an armada of Rakshasas and Ravanas outside.
They want to talk to you.
-
The Lliths and Cains don't look too happy either...
-
Neither do the Sathanas.
You owe our arch enemies the Shivans an apology, I think. ;P
-
Why do I always forget the Shivans?
Ummmm. Seeya Suckers!
*Flees like little sissy in Pegasus fighter*
All right, All right. So there are exceptions.
Thank god they forgot the Lucifer.
-
Well, the Lucifer has four or five beam cannons spread out everywhere, so you got lucky boy. :p

Bugger...
er, tell them I have the money, I was just on my way and what do you know, 'whoaff', i get a little technical problem and need to go down the garage for a fix, and then i met Steve - who I've not seen for ages, but he's a really decent bloke if a wee bit nuts - and we got chatting and next thing I knew it was Sunday, and you really should rest on Sundays, so i thought I should do the garden, but I took a wrong turn and ended up in Bognor Regis of all places, so...er........
Eep.
