What do you think classifies a planet as a planet?
-
Rupert!
-
I think that unknown hacker needs to be found and get his head kicked in. Must be really pissing off these scientists to have to release this news early.
Personally I don't think Pluto's a planet. It's orbit is wrong for that. It's a Kuiper Belt object same as Sedna and Quaoar. If Pluto was discovered today they wouldn't be calling it the 9th planet.
-
Again..?
-
Not really. Many sources claimed that Sedna was the 10th but pretty much all astronomers agreed that it wasn't.
The problem this time is that Pluto is classified as a planet but this thing is bigger than Pluto. Since Sedna was smaller they could get away with saying it wasn't a planet. They'll have a much harder time justifying that stance with this one.
-
I just hope that when they name it, they'll stick to the conventions set by the other planets. As in a name of a God, like Jupiter, possibly something Greek or Roman...Planet Romulus anyone? :p

Almost makes you feel sorry for the poor planetoid :D
-
Let's blow it up.
-
Sounds like a plan.
I'll bring the torch, you bring the pitchforks.

"Let's burn down the Observatory so this never happens again!"
-
The World won't collapse if people get knowledge of the 10th Planet.
-
I wish people would make up their minds about what "planet" meant. :p
-
Can we call it Mondos? Cookie for the reference.

Yes it will. The cultural shock of knowing there is another spherical rock in the nether regions of our solar system will be too much for civilization to bear. This knowledge must be contained at all costs.
Bring out the deneuralizers!

Anyone else waiting for that Russian "astrologist" to sue over this? :p

Actually they'll probably say that the fact that they didn't know about this planet is what stopped them from getting correct horrorscopes all this time and make a fortune selling all new ones to anyone moronic enough to believe that. :)
-
We shall call it... "Bob."

definition of a planet, by Bobboau:
a planet is a stelar body of suficent mass that it's material forms into the shape of a sphere under it's own gravity that orbits one or more stars
-
in that case, there are countless asteroids that you'd consider planets.
-
Asteroids aren't spheres though.
Technically, the Earth isn't a sphere either. It bulges around the equator.
-
some asteroids are spheres.
-
display sevral, and it specificly says due to there own gravity.
-
Ceres. and Pallas to some extent.
