Walmart employees have leaked Xbox 360 prices.
http://games.slashdot.org/games/05/08/03/148257.shtml?tid=211&tid=10
The console will be $299.99 and games will be $59.99
BTW: The Xbox 360 launch price is equal to the PS2 and Xbox launch prices.
-
Kids clearly have too much pocket money these days...
-
Cheaper than what I expected, really. Shame it'll cost triple that around here.
-
$60 for a game? Give me a break. And they wonder why piracy of games has been on the rise over the years........
-
Crap, I'm gonna need a raise. :doubt:
-
$400 for the console and $80 (AUD) for a game?
Sounds pretty normal to me... isn't that what most PC games cost?
-
$80 (AUD) is about right for a PC game, yeah. Although it does depend where you go shopping.
I still think that's far too much though.
-
No. PC games are much cheaper because the games don't have to make up for a loss on the platform, considering the platform is worth every bit as much as someone pays for it.
-
PC games aren't cheaper are they? $80 AUD is about £34 BP and that's what I'd expect to pay for most high street games.
-
Well, most PC games are cheaper. However, "blockbuster" games like Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 run for the same price as new console games, $50.
-
When doom 3 first came out I am pretty sure it did cost $60 US. But about a month late it dropped to a meager $45 or so.
-
That's the main reason I don't do consoles or even PC games much anymore. They simply cost me too much. $50 is a month's worth or more of pocket money.
-
That's about $400 Canadian plus around $70 for new games.
Jesus, what kid has that much money to throw around?
-
The ones who use their parents money.

I know what you mean. I haven't bought a game in years. I just aquire them through other means.
-
Console price seems to be the expected (albeit I'd never actually pay launch price for any console, becuase that's when they're being sold for silly money), games strike me as being a bit pricey. I'm not sure what the general US games cost is, but over here it's pretty easy to get them for £30-35 provided you shop around.
If they were to sell titles for £60 UK* - and I doubt they will - they'd be screwing themselves.... even £50 is chancing it. Regardless of the console being a loss leader, people won't accept paying too much for games (particularly as the hefty console investment they make in buying the machine is worthless until they get a game). (incidentally, AFAIK Microsofts Xbox department is still making a loss... unsurprising given it was basically a shoe-in to get them into the console market)
I have to admit being dissapointed the way console launches are going; it'd be nice if they still chucked in a game as the bog-standard model. I think the PS may have started the trend of having the bare minimum, although I'm not sure.
*based around the usual launch price being about equal to the dollar value, making it 1.5 times more expensive in actual money by rough exchange rate
-
Looks like it's time to start saving...
Also, new computer games cost around 350-550sek here (depending on where you buy it and what game it is), whilst new console games range from 450-700sek. Good prices is around 400sek and 550 for a console games, but most stores charge about 100sek more, so I order my games and get them sent by mail.
-
Good prices are 10;-
The cost of an empty DVD.
-
Save your money for the cheaper Nintendo Revolution!! You'll be able to download games from every past Nintendo Console at a tiny cost if anything at all...!
-
ahhh, downloading games and burning them to a dvd... ;7;)
-
I remember when you could walk into a computer store and buy a brand new game for $45 US (that's the price I got FS2 for, right off the shelf).
Now you're lucky to get a brand new game, sans anything but a small box and a CD and if you're lucky, CD case (becaus HL2 shipped with 5 slip covers :wtf: ), all for $60-$70 - which is just ****ing nuts.
-
Alot of new games come out at $99 (AUD) but then drop 10 or 20 dollars after a few weeks.
IIRC Doom3 now goes for cheap though, below even the $30 mark on special.
I'll be waiting a few months to see how the prices pan out and performance against other consoles goes.
I really wanna get the new Nintendo, just because it looks like a tiny black video cassette. That's awsome. ^_^

Or I could always keep my old Nintendo consoles at no additional cost whatsoever. Seriously, in 1988, I could understand shelling out for NES games, but I'm not sure I could justify even a quarter-per-game charge to rebuild my NES collection on the Revolution in 2005. I know I can't justify spending a penny on rebuilding my NES collection as long as my NES console and cartridges still work. Likewise with my SNES and N64.
Honestly, I make a point to not buy games immediately after release anymore. I'll usually wait a couple months and save ten to twenty dollars, or if I've got something else occupying my time, I'll wait until the game gets rereleased, bundled with its expansion pack(s) for the same price it would have been unbundled. Of course, sometimes I've just got to walk right past the new releases and hit the bargain bin. Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 for ten dollars? Don't mind if I do...
-
Sometimes you can get great prices at video rental stores like Blockbuster. I got a sweet Gamecube game, (Smuggler's Run: Warzones), for just $10.
Of course, being the loyal Nintendo fan that I am, I would never buy an Xbox360 for over $10. Alight maybe $20, or rather $30, or $40....
-
You know, you would probably have a lot more fun if you tried all the consoles...
-
I did, asamatteroffact. That's why I ended up with a PS2 (admittedly only because the GC didn't have Pro Evo).

Turnsky, you're officially my Hero of the Moment (tm). :D
-
You can complain all you want about 60$ for a game, but the way things are now, its too difficult for anything other than a major hit game to make any money. plus, its called inflation, games have been 50$ since the dawn of time, everything else has risen. Its just the way of things.
-
question: what about those who brought an Xbox before the Xbox 360? Any refund for them if they want to switch to the 360?
This is a pickle of a situation........
-
Fah! Why should I waste a good $400-$600 on just an Xbox360 or PS3, when I can get the more modest Revolution and a bugger-load of great games (ie. SSB:M Sequel, MP3) for the same price...?

Because there are equally good games on the other consoles, maybe?

Really? Well, let's hear 'em... :doubt:

Why spend $400-600 on a console atall? Just wait 6-12 months and not only will it be about half prices, the range of games will have doubled, you'll have more buying options (i.e. special offer packages) and you'll be able to make an informed judgement over which has the best games.
-
Ah Aldo, always chiming in with a response that makes the rest of us look moronic :p

well, yeah..
Australians won't get the 360 until around march or so, next year, prolly later for the other consoles, (unless nintendo and sony have something up their sleeves), which is a blessing in disguise, it means we can make a more informed choice about what console to buy, and what games, too, it also allows us to see all the americans ***** about whatever the hell they don't like about a particular console..
besides, the first thing i'm gonna blow a major wad of cash is on a radeon x850, (or whatever the top-of the line radeon card for AGP is when i get the money saved up) then a new 19" CRT monitor.. (i have a viewsonic model lined up, professional graphics grade)
so a new console isn't on the top of my "must buy" list.
what the first console sales will hinge on, would be the release titles available.. nothing else, no amount of graphical or advertising clout would make up for having sweet **** all in the games department.

Dude. Save for an LCD. I'll point you to a sweet LCD deal that's every bit as good as a Viewsonic, but half the price.

just point me in the right direction,
if its listed somewhere that distributes in Australian money and such, that is..
PM me with the details, don't wanna derail the thread.

My brother is an xbox fan and will probably get a 360 the day it comes out.
I personally have never been impressed by consoles though. Crappy FPS games, no mod capabilities, few customization options and monthly charges for playing online = bad. FPS games on a console suck because of the gamepads, and even if a mouse/KB combination is supported, I'm not sure how you would use that comfortably in a living room setting. At least these next generation consoles look like they will address the poor graphics issues.
Also, if I want to actually buy a game, I always go to ebay. After the first two weeks or so from the release date, the prices are considerably less than what you would get at stores, even with the shipping.

The only LCDs that can really match a good AG CRT in contrast ratio and color accuracy are professional grade models that cost over $3000. Although they are convenient if you need to travel with them a lot.

and i don't.. besides, i've gotta fork out over 600 bucks australian for the damn thing (about 120 or so for frieght)
and it seems, that much to my chagrin, the store i was gonna buy it from doesn't stock them no more. :(
it's just that i need one to do basically....everything from general viewing, to gaming... to photoshop

Keep it or trade it in. I recommend keeping it so that if you can split play time better between competing parties.
-
Money is **** for trade-ins, at least in my neck of the woods. It's better to sell it 2nd hand via a paper ad or similar; there's usually someone looking out for a cheap xmas present. (hell, I even flogged off an acorn electron that way)

For the Viewsonic you mentioned? That seems very high for a 19" CRT...isn't that around $450 USD?
and it seems, that much to my chagrin, the store i was gonna buy it from doesn't stock them no more.
yeah, unfortunately high end CRTs have all been out of production for a while and are increasingly difficult to find. And the best ones, those based on the SuperBright Diamondtron tube, had horrendous quality control in their last few months of production, so the few that are still available have such a high defect rate that you are better off getting a used one. I got this (http://www.necdisplay.com/products/ProductDetail.cfm?Product=232&ClassificationFamily=1&Classification=1) one about two months ago, which was arguably the absolute best monitor of any type out there under $3000, but went through three replacements before I got a properly working one, and even then only because the fourth one happened to be manufactured over a year ago and was still new. At least their RMA system is very good.
By the way, back on topic, even with all the fancy hardware specifications on the 360, does anyone else think that 512MB of shared memory is quite low compared to everything else? That sounds like it might lead to fewer or blurrier textures in games. The textures in the latest computer games are quite underwhelming compared to some things a few years ago, but they are still much better than the ones in console games.

Depends on bus bandwidth and cache sizes as well, IIRC.
