I highly doubt a wise admiral would make all those ships fly so close the ones from the others in such a dense nebulae
-
they're holding tight formation so they can stay in scanner range of e/o

I know exactly what you mean.
Maybe you could make some vertical planes (partly transparent), and map with a nebula textures, and have the ships pass through them? Or flattened spheres with a clod texture?
I've never had much luck with TS renders, though, so I'm not sure this would work.
-
that's how it's done in FS so it would look even better.

Bobboau, bringing you products that work.............. in theory

It would also take forever in the year
BTW: The RGB on that background is 40,0,0 so it should be pretty much black
Media Player really pisses me off by cranking up the color values by about 3x or 4x
-
I'm redoing the nebula.. it's going to take forever in the day to setup and even longer to render
-
grr.. it washes white and takes entirely too long to render.. and this is just a 170x170x590 section
-
I couldn't see much. Actually, I don't weven understand what you are trying to accomplish in the pictures.

Doesn't Truespace support Volumetric Fog?
btw, doesn't this remind anyone of a certain FS2 mission? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) *cough*Kappa Wing*cough*

not very well.. and it takes more than forever to render with it
