Post by: TrashMan on August 11, 2005, 08:05:48 am: I know this post will probably make many think I'm arogant, egoistic, (insert a negative trait here) or something in that manner (however false that might be), but this thought has been bugging me for some time, and I'm sure some other forum members too.. so here it goes:

How often do the Highlight get updated and what are the criteria for something getting highlighted?

Why do I ask?
Well, for starters, I've been modding FS2 for 4 Years now and I got into the highlights once (most people don't get there at all). Dispite the number of models I pumped out, that's not the issue.

I'm thinking WHY did I got put there in the first place?

I nameplated the stock Orion, Hecate and Deimos - a simple, not much demanding or original work. conver POF to cob, add nameplates, fix allthe axes, convert back.
Slightly tedious becaouse of the axes, but that's it! Nothing special about it.

and hten I go and make the upgraded Hecate, Teh Whiteall and Archangel - my dearest and best works so far. And nothing else got released in the same week as those models (not even in teh smae month I think). Those were time consuming, tedious and difficult projects and far better then just nameplated ships... I think everyone will agree with me on this one

So what is the criteria there?..I'm confused.

Thats a very good point and I'd be interested to hear the criteria for this also.

Maybe they simply don't like your original stuff all that much, but highlighted the nameplated FS2 ships as they could see more people making use of it.

The current highlights are somewhat impressive, though; an HTL Erinyes & Mjolnir, Omnis kick-arse DeathStar video, and a new campaign. i.e. 2 models that should be useful for everyone who has the game, one of the most technically impressive things I've ever seen, and a brand new campaign which can be picked up and played.... I'm not sure their demotion is necessarily justified.

Anyways, IMO it's not worthing *****ing over. I think I've only had one highlight ever, but I don't particularly care to be honest.....

[color=66ff00]No doubt but others have worked on upgraded Hecates with no less fervor and as you pointed out the Hecate is a WIP. Should we highlight your WIP and not the others?

As for the timing, most of us have jobs, are at uni (2 exams imminent myself) or have other RL commitments. We do as much work as we are able when we are able.

Post by: Fineus on August 11, 2005, 08:55:38 am: To be honest I think it really is a case of "whim". If an admin happens across something that they thinks is worthy of a highlight, up it goes.

However, this does not mean that your work will certainly be highlighted - or that if it's not, we don't like it.

I'd also like to plug the potential use of the forum functions for non-admins to suggest highlights. While this edition of the forum doesn't have a highlight function, you could use the "report this post to a moderator" function to suggest highlights as well. After all, all it really does is bring the post in question to our attention and allow you to say why you did it.

So if you see someones model and you think it's really worth showcasing - shout out about it using that function or PM or something. Let us know! :)

While the demotion of "Horrible Idea" was certainly justified ;) Actually it's that one in particular that cements the highlights as admin whim. Go to the main page and call it up if you need reinforcement of that fact.

Post by: Singh on August 11, 2005, 10:10:07 am: Highlights are sometimes given when it is recommended by enough people - if a significant percentage think its highlight-worthy, changes are someone will think its worth it and recommend a highlight (or if an Admin agrees, he or she will do it him or herself) and voila! Into the top bar it goes :D

Depends of the model quality. I don't want my low quality stuff in the highlihts - I want my best works there or non at all.
If you made a high-quality model and a low quality one, and the low-quality one was highlighted, wouldn't you feel kinda strange?

Erm..my Hecate v2 is not a WIP, it's a released, done, in-game, downloadable ship.
I said I plan on doing a even more detailed model later, but that doesn't mean that this one isn't done.
Others Hecates were just screenies of a model in progress, not even textured.

We said that several times already. Stop *****ing and start using the bloody website features. We post highlights of stuff we find and think is cool enough. If they're suggested, and we think it's cool enough, it'll be approved and will show up as a highlight. Simple as that.

Only last time I tried that I screwed it up and ended up with a highlight with no picture and a broken link.

Still not 100% sure what I did wrong there either.

No, that's to post news items. Highlights need pictures attached to them - more specifically, a single GIF or JPEG 160 pixels wide and 50 pixels tall.

That's because the moderator/admin who approves the suggestion is listed as its poster (never mind that they often make modifications). It's built in to the system, at least in part, to prevent abuse.
