Here's the deal: 6 missions. At the start of the campaign, the player chooses a side. He/She then plays the campaign. Playing as "the other side" means you experience the same missions from another perspective (ie a mission to escort the GTD Ship becomes an assualt on the GTD Ship). If I go with 3 factions it should give a nice mix of missions, twists etc. Probably make the final mission for each faction unique plus some ships, weapons etc.

Sounds good, but if you have 3 factions using the same 6 missions, well...? What part would each faction play in each mission? To use your example.
Faction 1: Attack GTD whatever.
Faction 2: Defend GTD whatever.
Faction 3: Take a seat and watch?

Inspired by X-wing vs. TIE Fighter, aren't you?

Never played it actually. I was thinking (loosley) more StarWars Battlefronts, where you would play the same locations but slightly different situations.
Jetmech, I was thinking 3 groups so each faction would have 1 or 2 specific missions, just so the player felt it was woth playing through again and to throw in some surprises (I've always like the idea of a 3 way fight which never happened in a :v: mission.

Has too, in Silent Threat the 1st mission i think it was. Where terrans and vasudans duke it out and you try to quell the uprising by blowing their ships to smits. :p

I'm doing something like this, though the two branches are completely different, and then form together afterwards.
I like the idea, though. If you feel up to it, go for it!
EDIT: It also sounds alot like what Shadow had planned for Mercenaries, in a way. Not that that's a bad thing, just that great minds think alike. ;)

The problem would be that none of your previous actions could effect laer missions, or it'd change the future missions.
It's a good idea, though it might be an idea to branch a bit - maybe the last 2 or 3 missions so that someone could actually win.

Doubt my idea is as ambitious as Shadow's. And it really depends if I can find the time what with learning unwrapping, texturing etc.
