That would suck actually. Dell computers are junk, but the Dell website is a great place to buy various components and peripherals for cheap prices and excellent no-hassle return policies. There is apparently a 7800 GT for $349 there that quite a few people are jumping on.

My Dell isn't junk. It's only lasted twice as long as my old HP laptop did. Not like that's much of a comparison......

Mine basically is, with the poor cooling and flimsy cardboard-like construction I have posted about before. Don't know about their desktops though.

Mine is a laptop, and it isn't flimsy at all (actually it is quite heavy). It's fallen a few times, but it still works as good as it always has.

As for desktops I just build my own. It's the only way I can get exactly what I want.

I do admit, they are good on returns or if you need alot of pcs for say computer labs. But they can really suck. I personally don't trust any pcs built by manufacturers

Unfortunately when it comes to laptops, I don't see what choice you (or anyone else for that matter) have. Laptops have sacrificed flexibility for mobility.

I think some companies make barebones chasses for laptops, which at least allow for some level of customization (and cost savings).

I like Dell. Nice machines, certainly in Uni.

My first pc was a dell and it works fine still yet today. (purchased in 99)

My new one is a dell 8300 it's stood acting as a foot prop while I'm on it as well.  They're not flemsy if you ask me

I have one of their business oriented Latitude laptops. Maybe they make their business models cheap and flimsy and their home models are better?

Nah, they go in cycles.  The Latitudes of about 3 years ago were pretty solid. Beefy hinges, fans, big case, etc.  They slimmed them down and started using lighter plastics at some point in the last year or two (most easily seen in the much cheaper and more awkward release button) and will probably start bulking them back up fairly soon.  However, Dell has never really been known for their laptops; they are sort of on top there by default since HP has publicly soiled itself over their reliability and IBM has stopped branding international machines.

The towers, on the other hand, tend to be very well designed.  The generation of cases that they've been using on the business side has been very robust and is easy to work on, while the home/home-office lines have incorporated many of the key features.  Flimsy, Dell systems are not (for the most part).  Their faults lie in other areas, most notably the long-term reliability of their internal, lowest-common-denominator parts.

Dell is a long way from dying....  Still sometimes I wonder.  I just ordered a Canon10-22mm lens from them for $150 less than even the cheapest bargain place on the net.  How can they make a profit off deals like that?? :)

Because the hardware comes from the factory at a tenth of that price.

Speaking roughly of course.

How can they? I watched one, and, dude, I'm gettin' a Dell!

The ads suck, but I don't think Dell comps suck.

Not to mention being given $77m (plus tax breaks) as an incentive to build a factory.

Oh, I sure understand how they do that for their own products, like computers.  I'm still astonished at such a cheap price for a camera lens.  Today the exact same lens was on sale for _another_ $40 less, so i cancelled my first order and ordered again.  I am AMAZED that I could buy a 10-22mm lens for $580!  The cheapest price I see elsewhere is $745! With deals like that I say Dell ROCKS!!! :)

For some reason we get Dell brochures, and everything in them is grossly overpriced........

And they never put a single AMD into their comps - so they MUST be bad! :o

But even if they did, I still prefer building my own. Yuo decide what gets put in there - nothing more, nothing less.

I used to feel the same way. Now that all I do, day in and day out, is go to businesses all over the state and service peoples machines, the last the I want to do is service my computer when I get home.

My next computer will be a desktop from a major manufacturer with a next day or same day on site parts and service warranty.

If you don't have time to built it yourself, I've heard that Monarch offers excellent pre-built systems and support for lower prices than most OEMs; their hardware prices have always been very good and they don't charge much extra for putting everything together themselves.

Mine is a little over a year old, so I guess I got one of the crappy ones. Are you referring to the release button for the PC card slot? That thing is so annoying to work with.

My complaint with Dell laptops are their horrible touchpads. They're unresponsive and the buttons are annoying.

I'm quite fond of Thinkpad touchpads though as it's high quality. The touchpad has 3 buttons and there's also an eraser stub mouse with its own set of buttons.

Aren't all touchpads unresponsive to some degree or another? The Dell I have also has the pointer stick thing with separate buttons, so I always use that and have just disabled the touchpad driver altogether.
