Title: tBE model preview: Vasuda Prime Spaceyards

The above is a preview of the Vasuda Prime orbital drydocks in which the GVJ Obeid currently is undergoing final tests.... until late October...   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Edit: In the distance can be seen an earlier rendition of the model. Details are still not final on the current model and may be subject to change.

Well I'm glad it's liked.

Unfortunately due to the size of the installation it's extremely lightly armed, and the top and bottom regions lack turrets protecting the pylons and so need heavy fighter or similar strikecraft support.

Why should it have any weapons at all?  GTVA shipyards aren't armed. (the Ganymede)

Wow! That's a very cool looking dock! Almost looks like something from Star Trek (the way the shipyard surrounded the whole ship), but it's got the FS universe feel.

1) because the Ganymede doesn't have any so that's like the precedence Volition created, and

2) because its main purpose is to build ships, so all of its facilities, energy, room, etc is devoted to that...

3) and you could also say that, like (most) cargo containers, these things aren't supposed to be on the front lines and are meant to be deep inside your home territory where you never (or so you hope) get attacked.

But then again... it's all just a game/fiction so if you make up a valid reason for why the culture would arm their shipyards, then you could arm them.

What about a dry dock much bigger and divided into sections? (One section for building/repairing and another for defenses.)

No- because the way the AI behaves in freepsace 2 a large shipyard facility should ahve defenses - and a the ganymede was a cheap excuse for a drydock

The ganymede was never meant to be anywhere near the front lines, theres no point for it to have weaponry, unless theres a frantic evacuation, and it has to defend the orion being built in it... :-/

There are actual valid reasons within tBE for why these are armed.

What about a dry dock much bigger and divided into sections? (One section for building/repairing and another for defenses.)
This drydock is specifically designed to house, build, and retrofit Semnai class vessels and ships of similar scale.

Ganymedes are in use for the standard allied fleet.

Also going on the logic of "shipyards don't have turrets, so why does this have them?" you would then ask "the Knossos doesn't have turrets, so why does the GTI Charon have them?"  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

The Shivans could be the reason why the drydock is armed.  Of course, considering the history of the Vasudans (especially things like Operation Thresher), they might have realized some time ago that an undefended spacedock is a debris field waiting to happen.

Because getting to a shipyard involves going past the entire Terran army, out into an unknown area where could easily take a wrong turn and wind up cornered... mostly because they don't know where the shipyards are, same reason the Terrans didn't go for the Shivan yards...

And when the enemy is so deep into your lines, I don't think the first thing yo think of is "damn I need to protect my ship yard!!!". If the enemy can attack the shipyard that easily, it's coz he's very close, so the shipyard is probably cut from resources, so it's useless. I bet my left hand that when the enmy is that close, you just evacuate the damn thing (like the GTA did in FS1 for many arcadias... turrets on the arcadia are useless)
