Title: Website format for FSURP
Post by: Shadowman on August 08, 2001, 03:41:00 am
ok peeps, this is where things start to get interesting.

I have done the basic webpage in html, but have decided to make the description windows for the systems in Flash...is this to everyones taste? or would you prefer a hmtl and a flash version that you can choose between.  I decided to use flash as I want the descriptin windows to act sortof like a little computer readout screen.

When i've got an example done i'll post it here

I have a 56k, so I'd prefer to have the choice coz some days it goes surprisingly fast, and some others it goes (not surprisingly at all) very slow, so...

this is quite important - if i dont get feedback then i wont be able to produce a widely accessiblt site.  i'd rather use the Flash idea to html

Um.. i vote for Flash, it looks cool, even if you have to wait for it.

Maybe make a simple html index pop-up window, for quick acess?

BTW, do have a link to some good tutorials - I've got the trial verison, but the tutorials there don't cover one or two things i want to play around with.

I actually bought a book on it - cost £15 but is well worth the outlay if you want to get to know the workings properly

Plain text.  No fancy html, no images, no links.

Just kidding.  I'd keep it to 800x640 since many of us don't use insane resolutions.  Remember the law of everything:  K.I.S.S.  Keep It Simple, Stupid.  Everything else is up to you.  If you want flash, frames, ect, leave us poor modem users a choice to shut it out.  We spend enough time online, and don't need to spend more loading your site.

I know there is a method, but all I see is madness.

Overall here's a suggestion:
1) Flash page with full animations, and little things to seem like a GTVA command brief animation. (i.e. like the Colossus cutsceen schematics)

2) .html text pages with a web directory to them, dividing up the pages into content categories. (for those who just want the information without the fancy media)

Ok, well Eishtmo I actually build all my sites to scale from 800x600 to anything higher - so that shouldnt be a problem  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

And Ace, thnx for the input - thats the format I'll use, although I think it'll take a while for the Flash version to be completed  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

Flash seems to take up memory sources. I'd go with 2 versions of the page, flash version and HTML version.

Being a fellow webdeveloper I would have to say that the best combination is both. Use spatial flash for areas of cool interest but the mainstay of the site should be HTML/DHTML complete with CSS control.

Well, you can't just lock out people not using Flash. I for one know that my brother (The L33t One™) uses Lynx mostly, and Mozilla if he's in a Windows environment, neither of which have Flash support (did you expect that of a text browser?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)).

Having half half would be good. Don't discount databases for the format though, they would be useful if you were outputting several pages of data to a template.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Thanks to my recent conversion... I'd say to go with a table-less site  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) (except for data tables that is  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif))...

But I would say that, unless a cookie of preferences is set, the site should be a Nielsen-esque, image-minimalist, fast loading site. I mean it's main purpose is as a universal reference, so I know that I would want to be able to just load up the site real fast, find the info I need (via a easy to find and use navigation), and then continue making my mission/campaign/fiction/whatever without having to wait for lots of graphics or other stuff. And then if people have fast connections, want lots of graphics, then they can click links to open up big images or set cookies to always load the flash site.

But those are just my 2 cents on the matter.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Joe.

Right, well there will now be 2 versions of the site:

1) This will be a predominantly text based site with simple anchors so that you can find what you need.

2) More graphically enhanced for those of us that use IE or Nutscrape, and have a decent connection (i dont, but then again it's my site so i'll just look at it on my hdd or at work (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif))
