Well, what is it? Joystick, mouse/keyboard, or neural implant? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
I use a joystick, the MS Sidewinder Precision Pro - I can do virtually anything in the game with this stick. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Me too, good choice. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) I also use the keyboard. (duh) But I can never memorize the buttons on the joystick so I only use the 1 and 2 buttons. Sometimes the throttle. The three most important keys I use: \, Ctrl, and Tab.
-
BTW, never buy a Wingman Interceptor, I've bought 3 already and none of them worked on all 5 of my computers.
-
Though I'm quite opposed to Microsoft, I cant think of anything better than playing FS2 with my sidewinder Forcefeedback 2 and my GameVoice headset. Its SO much cooler when you can actually SPEAK you're comunications, as in actual voice commands! "Alpha wing form up, Beta wing engage enemy, Delta wing disarm my target!" Woohoo!
It also lets me focus more on the actual flying as well as alow me to use the wingmen more efficiently. Whoah... I'm almost selling Microsoft here.... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Hmmm... I see a lot of you use the Precision Pro 2. I have one question for you: does it have the "shift" button that version 1 has - the button that effectively doubles the commands that you can assign to the joystick's buttons? Cause from what I can tell on the box, it doesn't, which is why I haven't bought it. 8 buttons are nice, but 16 buttons rule!
For example, I always have the trigger as primary fire, and the "shift"-trigger as toggle primary weapons. Very handy. I couldn't play w/o it.

I use the Saitek Cyborg 3D Joystick (the best available for us lefties), and the keyboards numberpad section. This allows me to do virtually everything with minimal hand movement.

I don't think so. Here are the controls on mine: Trigger Thumb Button Little thumb botton Other littlethumb button 4 Base buttons (the ones on the bottom) Throttle 8-Direction POV hat
Even though it dosen't have a shift button you can program macros. example: I can program button 5 to fire my primary weapon, then equalize shields then fires secondary weapons and finally engace subspace drives, all with the touch of 1 button

A type D-14 Neural Interface Helmet, and when that doesn't work, a 7 year old mouse with a keyboard.

That can be done with the Precision Pro Mk I - plus it has the Shift button. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I use a Wingman Extreme. I'm happy with it since it's the first stick that I've had more than a year without it breaking. I also like the twist ability, although I don't use it nearly as often as I used to.

I use the Guillemot Force Feedback Joystick (designed for use by left or righted handed people)
A huge beast of around 4 kilo and a lot of buttons, a throttle, a rudder and a hat (where would we be without one, it's so useful when looking at those cap-ships going boom while runnign from the blast (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) )

Depending on whether I'm feeling adventurous or murderous, I'll go with my Precision Pro or my keyboard (respectively).

Force feedback all the way, theres nothing quite getting the hell knocked out of you by flak whilst feeling the recoil of whatever gun you're currently blasting away with. Of course the fun really begins when capships are going up, you're close to the blast and your getting hammered with antifighter beams, it just rocks (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Are you using a 32bit video card? Because I had problems with that - drops back to the desktop after the 3dFx logo. I had to deactivate detect Glide or something like that.

Even worse choice would be changing a name just because you know why. I've used this nick in the VBB and elsewhere for a long time and thus decided to use it here as well. It's not the name I use outside gaming stuff, though. Besides, there's a single r in it, not two. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) It's formed from my real name "Tero", as a joke. Good for Counter-Strike. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Have, both Logitech Wingman Force, and the Thrustmaster Top Gun afterburner, depending on which mood i'm in. Feel the Shakes, or feel the throttle. (also depends on which actually works in whatever game i happen to be playing.
Edit: And i just have to sya this, a freind of mine, whom i let borrow Freespace 1(pre-FS2) was able to actually beat the game on a laptop with one of those touchpad things.

Starcraft is not 3d, which is why you can still play it just fine even though freespace cannot detect 3d accel.
What kind of card do you have? If you hae one of the more recent VooDoo cards, then you may need to go into the 3Dfx toolbox and disaple the glide splash screen.

That Seitek joystick is the one that looks like it was assimilated by the Borg, right? the one that can have it's buttons and stuff repositioned?
Well thank you sandwich.
Is the Seitek one called a cyborg? 'caus if thats the one, then yes, the buttons can be repositioned, and I have Two buddies who recomend it highly.
edit: Nope, just saw the pic.

It also lets me focus more on the actual flying as well as alow me to use the wingmen more efficiently. Whoah... I'm almost selling Microsoft here.... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Evil is the root of all money, so where is my money?

Keyboard. One hand does left/right and the other does up/down. Other keys are done by the hand that's nearest to them. My key choices go all the way back to by BBc Micro days.

tru tru. I use the Saitek Cyborg (though i aint a lefty) i luv the smooth movement when ur changing direction - the whole thing reeks of quality. KB for the finer movements ie long distance. the only thing that i can say 'gainst it is the no F feedback - dammit id love 2 c the effect a capital goin down has on ur puny litlle fighters handling!
and it has a bit of a tendancy to loose its calibration mid game - but other than that - a SCHWEEET bit o' kit.
(ps any other Saitek Cyb. users - do u have the same prob with the calibration? -could just be me and a dodgy port)

You never can tell.

Heehee.... I have to 'tweak' my stick ingame a lot

Keyboard all the way here. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) I even use a keyboard-only system in FPS action games. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
-
(http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/eek.gif)
after playing Quake I got used to use mouse so much that I just can't figure out how I managed without it (well FPS's didn't have a "good" mouse support before Quake so that migh be the reason)

Keyboard is almost as bad as console contolers!!! Almost!!! (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
(Consoles suck!)

naaaah, nothing's that bad (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/lol.gif)
anyway, CP5670, I assume you've never played FPS online (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
-
I play them online constantly, actually. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) (mainly Unreal Tournament and Tribes 2) I think it is just a matter of getting used to it; I have been using this only since the days of Doom and Quake. I'm still a newbie at T2, but I was able to beat a couple of pretty good guys in UT, so I guess the keyboard does work by itself. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

oh (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
well the last game I played 100% keyboard was Duke3D. with quake I discovered mouse, and could never go back to keyboard only. A U-turn is too slow, and aiming enemies on a different level is so easier (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) it's just point and click (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
anyway, I admit I prefer the full keyboard for the Descent series.
-
Yeah that is about the only disadvantage I find with the keyboard; U-turns are somewhat hard to do quickly. The other movement maneuvers seem to easier for me though. I have found that it is a bit harder to aim with this control setup (at least for me), but much easier to dodge incoming projectiles, so nobody ever hits you. This is exactly the same case I have with 56k and cable internet connections. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
Keyboard. One hand does left/right and the other does up/down. Other keys are done by the hand that's nearest to them. My key choices go all the way back to by BBc Micro days.
My setup is something like this:
Right hand is on the numeric keypad, left hand is on the right end of the main set of keys (near right shift, enter, right ctrl, etc.)
Left: (all on numeric keypad)
2-4-6-8 : turning down/left/right/up (not inverted)
7/9 : banking (somehow an inverted banking system seems to work better for me)
-/+ : throttle up/down respectively (don't use this much but I like to have the throttle set to zero, so I need to use the throttle down key at the beginning of some missions where it is 33 by default)
0 : countermeasure
1: switch primary
3: switch secondary
Right hand:
Enter : speed up
' (apostrophe) : slow down
Slash: afterburner
Space : fire primary weapon
Right ctrl : fire secondary weapon
L/; (semicolon) : target prev/next hostile target
O/P : target prev/next subsystem
M/, (comma) : target prev/next turret
Those are most of the major ones. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Cool! I need to try that; the network administrator (admiral) may decide to ban (remove from GTVA military) me, but it's worth a try... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
