Is there any? I read sumthin about freelancer, and I keep seeing things about XAlliance, and Wing Commander. are they good too? either way, what are the best games like freespace?
-
Nothing compares to the greatness of FReespace. But FreeLancer is another Space simulation game, which is not like freespace in some aspects, as you can get better gear by working and tradeing ect.
Wing Commander is a older game (i think) and many have enjoyed that. I personally dont know wtf it is.
EDIT:
Wing Commander: Armada (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,34616.0.html)
-
Wing Commander is a good game. But I'm not going back.
I highly recommend Freelancer, and also Starlancer if you can find it.
-
true nothing is as good as freespace, the same can be said about ALL DESCENT games. Anyway, there was also an old star wars game that i looked at and its mention on this forum, you guys remember? im spazzing!
-
X-Wing?
Tie-Fighter?
X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter?
Rogue Squadron?
Rebel Assault?
Knights of the Old Republic?
Cmon, throw me a frickin bone here!
-
Wing Commander - Secret Ops still active Community and it's free... for Germans :D
If you're English, you must buy "Wing Commander Prophecy Gold", we Germans don't have "WC: P Gold" and so we can download Secret Ops :D
In my opion Freelancer isn't like Freespace... Freelancer is only a big joke, but not a Space-Sim.
I think Starlancer, Tachyon: The Fringe, Star Wars X-Wing Alliance are more Games you search for.
If you like Trading, then try one of the Privateer Remakes or buy X²...

That should be THE opinion of every FS2 fan. ;7

DOOM3
-
Doom 3 like freespace?
ur not in a space ship.. u dont c space.. so
:wtf:
-
Wing Commander 4......*looks for label* "The Price of Freedom"
Or Wing Commander 5: Prophecy
Freespace 1 was what pretty much ripped off Prophecy IIRC (or the two have strikingly coincidential identical plots :doubt: )
Anyway, I still have the originals of both games. I replayed Prophecy about a year ago. It was still okay to play, though it doesn't compare to FS of course.
Also, it should be noted that WC is Mark Hamill's best role - not Star Wars.
-
I would say his part as The Joker in the Batman cartoon series

Yeah, it is stupid to relate two near-identical storylines, in two near-identical games, released within a year of eachother.
Silly me
Oh yeah, to point out I'm being sarcastic, here are images to show my mood.

Why? Freelancer is as just a good a game as any other. It has its highs and lows, and Freespace has its highs and lows as well.
As for my recommendations, Wing Commander is rather good, as well as any of the X-Wing/Tie-Fighter games.
-
Tie Fighter is an excellent game. I'd say the 2nd best space sim ever made. What's cool is that you fight for the Empire but it never feels like you're doing it just as a gimmick or something. It's a very polished game and I highly recommend it.
-
Tachyon: The Fringe is pretty good too. The capital ships aren't too well designed but almost all the fighters are pretty damn good, to say the least :D ;7
-
There is nothing wrong with Freelancer, it's just not my cup of tea after you finish the single player mode... At least you can mod FS to be whatever you want with minimal effort... Plus with SCP what else do you really need?
So please no outright game bashing unless you got a valid argument, even then it's not a nice thing to do. (sort of like making a first post in a project forum and declaring it your new home... Not saying anynames ;) )
-
Tie Fighter was good except for the fact that it went on forever (which isn't necessarily a bad thing) and as you neared the end you were given all sorts of uber fighters/weapons which made you all but invincible, which ruins a some of the atmosphere.
-
Freelancer in multiplayer wasn't too bad. PVP is amazingly fun when you got two VHFs trying to kill each other. Especially if both people are in Eagles. I had one go for like 30 minutes and it was sweet, even though i ended up losing, but my opponent was at about 10% armor.
The Independence War series is good too. Haven't played the first, but the second is a nice open ended game. The physics are extremely realistic and take a bit of getting used to.

you do realize that you may be offending people, do you? *snickers*

And dont make fun of freelancer, its a good game. idk why u guys hate it, or some of u anyway, but its a good, clean, fyn, INTENSE game. you dont find many games like that anymore.
:(
-
Freelancer was a pretty good game during the main campaign, but it gets boring fast after it ends. That's a pity, since the idea had a lot of potential. I never really got around to trying the multiplayer part.
-
I agree it was not as good as freespace 2 but during the really short main campaign, Freelancer was quite fun. (especially at the last parts )
-
I thorougly hate how Freelancer forces the player to do stupid, generic money making missions to move the storyline. It feels forced and artificial as well as being extremely boring.
Plus the ships look very ugly. It's not a "ugly but functional" look either but a "why the bloody hell does this ship look like a fish?" look.
BTW: If you liked Freelancer for the gameplay, Iwar 2 is probably a good game to play. It has a trading system that's more engaging than Freelancer's. Takes a bit to get used to the controls though.

It does? It never did for me. I actually became rather upset with the main storyline popping up before I'd made enough money silver-mining or gold-mining to get the ship I wanted, and ended up ignoring it for awhile. That was the only possible way to get a truly decent ship, at least up until the Anubis came along dirt-cheap.
-
and the anubis sucks ass :blah:
i wish you can get a Valk or Banshee in the single player game. awesome ships. Incidentally, the first time through i had a Crusader was from the time i was able to afford one up until the anubis was offered. The six forward guns would make it my favorite empire ship, if not for the thin shields and armor. On my second time through i was able to manage to pick up the Rheinland guns as loot as i progressed through the game. So I kept them as was able to mount them on the L6 Anubis slots.
We used to have freelancer and IW2 forums here. perhaps i can bribe Styxx to bring them back and lay barren.
edit: just reinstalled FL. If anyone still plays online tell me which server to join and which mods to get. I'm probably going to play through single before i get on.
-
I basically got a Defender in New York, switched to a Crusader at some point in Dublin, switched to a Dragon when I got to Kyushu and then stayed with that up until the Anubis was available. I used neutron weapons basically all the time from the point where I first picked them off enemy ships. They seemed to do nearly the best overall damage (out of the stuff available to you until the campaign ends) and you could get them for free off enemy ships. IIRC some of the neutron guns you could pick up off corsair ships in kusari were better than the order versions, so I stashed up several of those and waited until I had an Anubis to use them. I think I had also collected a neutron turret early on but had to hold on to it for a long time until I could use it, with the Anubis.
The last third of the campaign seemed really rushed. You were hardly able to spend any time in Rheinland and the aliens got defeated way too quickly and easily at the end. The first 2/3 or so of the game had set things up nicely but they sort of screwed it up later on.
-
Freelancer had some form of co-op multiplayer, didn't it? To be honest, that'd be the only attraction that it'd hold for me.
-
The Anubis is worth having with the max level you can achieve playing the campaign. You want to keep the shields from your old ship, though...
I got a Kusari Dragon late on my second play-through and photon weapons. The rate of fire was obscene and they cut through most things in nothing flat. Unfortunately they're not so good against the aliens...so it was back to neutrons on the Anubis.
From the Anubis, I kept going in single player for awhile after the campaign ended, got the best ship money can by, the Corsair M10 Titan, and enough of the Level 10 weapons to completely fill out its slots. Six forward Level 10 guns...if only I could have had that for the campaign. I would have loved to go up against some Rheinland cruisers with that.

I found it, and I tried to get the demo, but it says publisher not verified, i ran it as a different user, and it said language not recognized. Do any of u have it and get it to work on XP Pro? I wont buy it if it wont work on my computer.

Titans cant turn that well. Eagle's will fly circles around them.
-
Well, I considered getting the much more manuverable Outcast superheavy fighter (Sabre? Looks like an overgrown Stiletto...) but it only had five forward guns and I think one of them was a Level 8. And as a practical matter, I turn into the first pass, snap off two shots in a head-to-head, and most stuff dies. Immediately and without recourse.
-
What really pissed me off about Freelancer was that you have to wait until after the main campaign is over to get the really powerful torpedos and then there's bugger all to fire them at unless you want to take out pirate weapon platforms or other rubbish like that.
Apart from that I found it a fun little game. Even if the requirement to fly about trying to scrape enough money to trigger the next mission was annoying.
While I'm at it did anyone every find a use for mines?
-
Yeah. Some of them are actually quite nice things to have when you're flying a heavy fighter and somebody manages to get out of your forward arc.

Actually i think thats a good thing since you can stockpile some nice cash and get yourself a heavy fighter with L3 guns and a heavy thruster (get it from the hidden junkers base) after the first mission. Can't get L4 guns to finish off the defender until the last Liberty mission set IIRC.

The high level ones are decent, its just that sometimes its too laggy to use them or missiles in MP, which is a shame since i like my dual cannonball setup on my eagle since they don't drain your energy like the L9 or L10 guns, otherwise i'd go 2x Skyblast B (GMG in Sigma 13), 2x Hornviper II, 2x Firekiss II (both from police base in Dresden) . You can always get your hands on Nomad guns if you go into the unknown systems past Omi Alpha and Gamma, but thats just cheap, since they take 0 power and do 2000 dps :blah:
-
I love the zero energy usage on those Nomad energy cannons. :D After you get a couple of those, you don't need anything else.
There is actually a second Nomad weapon called Nomad Laser that you can see on some of their ships, but they never drop it.
-
well they're fine in single, but you get all these uber setups in multi that use 4x Nomads on an eagle with 2x Tizona del Cid's on the L9 points and the uber torpedo launcher as a missile. forget the name of it, but you can only find it at the Bundschuh base.
-
The Sunslayer or something...I've seen them aboard the Bretonian battleship in Dublin, too, and one of the Kusari battleships.
-
yea you can buy the ammo anywhere, but the first torp launcher (Starkiller) isn't available until you get to bretonia. I think the starkiller is better in MP anyway since its about 20x less expensive per torp and the launcher isn't tucked away in a place where you need an alt or some bundschuh friendly person to give you a launcher for an insane price.
-
The only ship in Freelancer that I felt was worth anything was that one Freighter that looked like a beetle. Sure, you lumber along like a lamed snail, but in Turret mode, you've got a bazillion Turret mounts to knock down anything in range.

The Drone? Haven't flown it myself, but the Rheinland freighter is pretty good too, even if the hardpoints are setup wierd.
-
It was, I think, the second most heavily armed freighter in the game, with one of the largest capacities. Toward the end of the game, I could survive most anything in it, just due to the raw volume of flashing lights I could put in the sky. Basic strategy was lame: run away, drop mines and abuse the arc of fire of the turrets. Lame, but damned effective in anything but an ambush at a jumphole.
