[color=66ff00]A sliding door that conforms to the shape of the person entering?!? Link (//www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/gadgets/gizmodo-japan-auto-door-117256.php)

Crazy Japanese brilliance.

 I saw this, I think it's awesome. Wasn't exactly what I thought it would look like though. I expected one of those round iris doors.

[color=66ff00]They're saying it's more efficient, keeps heat in and dirt out. Seems to have some glitches though, the sliders don't slide fast enough at the moment.

Heh. If I had something like that in an office, I'd try to rig it to work with a palm scanner. :p

And set up a voice-activated "Open the iris." command.

Then rig some speakers to make the whirrrr-clank noise.

Then get fired because I wouldn't be getting any actual work done. :p

Edit: was re round iris doors.

if you've been on this forum for as long as you have and still don't know what Invader Zim is, than you totally fail at life.

Why would I know what Invader Zim is? I don't watch television. And when you lot discuss television, I usually don't get involved. Thus, how am I supposed to link that footage to a topic I've never found out anything about?

besides I wouldn't have seen 2/3rds of it if I haddn't aquiered it over the net, nick stoped running it like four years ago because it was scareing the children. I don't know who had the wonderfull idea of giveing the guy who wrote this (http://www.lost1.net/files/JtHM.pdf) a cartoon for kids, but there probly fighting with the guy who came up with 'new coke' for a peice of meat right now, along with the guy who decided to cancel it rather than sell it to there sister corperation MTV, were it probly would still be on the air today given how strong it was in those demographics.

Looks like those infrared sensors need some work, aside from being too slow. Perhaps replace them with low-level lasers?

[color=66ff00]Infra red and laser radiation would have negligable differences in detection time as far as I'm aware, there's also a matter of safety; low powered lasers would still be more hazardous than IR.

I still think the whole idea is too gimmicky to see widespread use but then crazier things have happened.

the sensors need to be more in the door frame, looking in, determineing how wide to open, rather than on the edges of the strips looking out.

You could turn up the lasers for a burgler alarm system.

Plus I doubt anyone who remembers the automatic doors from The Living Daylights is going to fancy this system :D

One question: what happens if when entering the door, you happen to change your "shape" quickly, like lifting your arm to check the time or whatever? I doubt the strips could be made to adjust that fast.

Anyway, it's a cool gimmick, and something I'de like to see in action at least once.

It sounds neat and everything, but it'd have to be made to work fast enough to be just as fast as opening a door. Also, what about crowds? two people walking side by side? Getting something caught in the door?

I just see too many ways for this to be an inconvenience rather than something helpful right now. But who knows :)
